Like you I started out with military surplus gear, I used and still have several of the AF survival 499 knife, that was my main carry, back in those days I didn’t know anything bout bushcraft but I was a lover of the outdoors, canoeing, camping, hiking, I was actually doing some bushcraft skills and didn’t know it, bout four year’s ago I replaced my old canteens with those nalgene canteens, I really like them, no more nasty taste, l would like to get that Rothko cup. I know what you mean by nostalgia,I love using my military surplus gear, I’ve had the modern stuff but I always go back to my basics , currently that’s what I have been doing. Also using my old school military gear brings me back to a more simpler time when I was younger. In addition to this gear I always have my Serrera cup that I have used for many years on all my trips. Good video

I have two go-to recipes for canteen cup cooking. The first is Ramen. One pack of Ramen noodles and seasoning plus some shredded or chopped up beef jerky. Easy peasy. The other is Spam and grits, which is just about as simple when using food packaged in retort pouches.

Thanks Dan for the video. Yeah, I picked up one of those surplus canteens and could not stand the taste either. These days it is titanium water bottles with nesting cups. Also see that Grayl Water Filters now has a titanium option that you can also boil in the outer shell and has butterfly handles, but it is soooooo expensive.

Interesting video. 👍🏼 I’ve been carrying a military canteen cup in stainless steel since 1977. Still have the first one I got back then. Have a couple more, including the Pathfinder kit. I’ve tried the bottle setup. I have, and like, the Pathfinder kit, but it’s just not as satisfying to me. I carry two canteens with cups, and one canteen cup stove, because I like to cook my meal in one, and have my hot, or cold, beverage in the other. Plus with two canteens on your belt, the weight is more evenly distributed.

I bought a set in 2014 after seeing West Point graduates use them while we were in Infantry BOLC. 9 years later a deployment and two trips to NTC; 1 I looks as good as when I bought it, the other is a little scuffed but still very usable. The water defiantly tastes better and you can see when they need cleaning which is very rare.

I like my Nalgene bottles & I’ve had a Oasis canteen for several years with no issues, these things are tough. Knorr makes a great dry tomato soup mix. I divide the package in half for a canteen cup portion & you can add so many extra items like dried hamburger meat, extra vegetables, hardtack 😂. Make it thick or thin whatever way you like it, great base for you favourite soup. I like to make up a soup & have it with a small bannock & coffee. 🔥🇨🇦

We carried two of these 1 qt. canteens plus two 2-qt. canteens while I was in the Rangers (this was before CamelBak bladders was invented). As I gained more experience as a backpacker and bushcrafter, I learned that metal water bottles were and remai superior to plastic bottles. So I am not much of a fan of the plastic G.I. 1 quart canteens and civilian versions. Some metal canteens cost about the same as those plastic canteens. Obviously Kleen Kanteen bottles will cost more, but there are plenty of generic brands out there that are very inexpensive. Metal canteens are also more useful, they can be put into a fire to disinfect water and plastic canteens can't, yes I know that you can boil water in the cup. Metal canteens can also be used for making char cloth, obviously plastic canteens cannot. So I always recommend single wall stainless steel bottles with metal cups, or my preferred choice of titanium bottles and cups. And of course don't forget about the Grayl Geopress bottles and filters, albeit the most expensive item mentioned so far.
