    Lighter quits working below freezing, or if it gets wet. A ferro rod will work perfectly wet or cold. And a large one will last thousands of fires. Never run out of fuel.

    Glad you're ok Dan! Very great tips in this video. I am a truck driver and I drove through Oregon on I-84 westbound a couple days ago and then delivered in the Portland. There was lots of smoke when I drove through especially on I-84. Yeah there's so many fires in the northwest and southwest and around the country. The hot temperatures, winds and dryness doesn't help. Everyone be safe and always prepared. Thanks again for the video Dan. I really enjoy your videos and your style. I pray you're doing well. for real a mat is legit one of the most important things. If youre injured, youre either moving slow, stopping regularly or cant move at all. I dislocated my arm in the city once skateboarding at night. For some reason it took 40 minutes for an ambulance to get to me, low priority I guess but I couldnt get up. I was lying half on grass half on the pavement. It wasnt even that cold that night but I was shivering by the time they got to me. Now imagine a whole night of that. Gossamer gear make 1/8 inch thick ones most people just use under their inflatables and only weight ~100 grams and pack down really small. Worth the carry in every scenario conceivable. Now down side to carrying really.

    Excellent choice. I’m enjoying watching your old vids about the bigger blades. 👍🏼👍🏼 This video being 5 years old, I’m curious if this is still your favorite “survival” blade. I like the Junglass, but I bought the TOPS Armageddon about 9 years ago. I liked it, but the pointy little choil in the middle of the handle was in the way. I gave my Armageddon to Leo Espinosa at the NRA Convention in Nashville in 2015 and he sent it back to me three days later with that choil smoothed down. Now it’s so much easier to hold. It’s been my #1 “survival” knife ever since. Do you still have your Armageddon? You might try smoothing down that pointy little choil to see if it works better for you. …just a thought. 🇺🇸

    Glad you are enjoying some older videos. Since fire season hit in full force so quickly, I haven't had the chance to make a new video. I actually no longer have the Armageddon or the Junglas. I have really fallen in love with the knives from Architect Knives, and even got to design one of the handle options. The canvas micarta in woodland camo is my contribution. The AK 5 5 is my favorite do it all knife. When I want something bigger I carry the AK8 Paired with the 4.5. High Sabre is my absolute favorite grind on a survival knife as well. The 1095 blades are actually made by TOPS.

    I would prefer a backpack to a haversack. The haversack seems to be a "thing" now with KZread bush craft people. But I just don't think it can compare with a backpack for convenience and carry comfort. What I actually think is happening is that the KZread bush crafters are running out of things to talk about so they seized on the Haversack and what's in it to fill up half a dozen videos. For most people their interest is prepping and the idea that when the SHTF they can grab a pack and survive. Watch any of the current survivalist TV shows and it is obvious that most of us won't survive. Not because we chose a backpack over a haversack or because we didn't bring three ways to make fire. In the end it will all come down to getting enough to eat. And for some reason the KZread bush crafters don't really deal with this. Oh, they give it a lick and a promise now and the, sometimes even create a kit to snare or fish with. But the bottom line is in 90% or more of the back country you are going to starve to death. We, modern humans, don't know how to hunt and gather and the learning curve is too steep once we are actually out there. I would like to see the "experts" cover this issue better.

    @@Alas-xj8cr Not really sure what to reply. I do bushcraft because I love being in the woods, feeling free, exploring, watching wildlife, occasionally testing myself. Bushcraft skills are very enjoyable to learn and practice, and they give me the skills to get far away from people, roads, trails etc , and not even give it a second thought. I teach others there skills so they can enjoy the same freedom, and enjoy nature the same way as me. Not prepping for some event really. Simply, this is how I enjoy life to the fullest. Sitting in a lean to drinking Hot Cocoa by a fire in a blizzard, and being the only person in the woods, is a feeling I can't put into words. As far as haversack, I sometimes carry one, sometimes a backpack, fanny pack, sling bag, vest, or just what's on my belt. Depends on what I feel, what I want to do, what challenge I want to take on etc. So, I've done videos with all of these so everyone can have the same options.

  • @Alas-xj8cr
    @Alas-xj8cr17 күн бұрын

    Absolutely. Not trying to complain or be rude. I truly believe that most people reading these kinds of blogs are thinking about SHTF or Armageddon especially the way the world is going now. But the single biggest challenege facing anyone trying to survive that kind of event is eating enough food every day until the crisis is over. This is so difficult that no one takes it on. SO what will happen is we will all die with three ways to make fire, and four ways to make clean water but no way to get enough food to live. I just wish more KZread bush crafters would take up this challenge. I know the Oregon high desert well. Beautiful country. But if you aren't able to catch fish or shoot a deer you are going to be dead in three weeks. How do we solve this?

    I picked up the AK 4.5 in Magnacut when it first released and finally got a chance to really test it properly during a week long camping trip. The first few days were rainy at a campground with cut firewood, so I really beat it up batoning through big rounds of birch, maple, spruce and pine, both wet and dry, with a heavy wood baton I made with it. It performed flawlessly with hardwood rounds that were bigger than the length of the blade, wood it should never reasonably be used on, and the only affect besides making it dirty with resin was the handle scale screws needed to be tightened slightly after 3 days of beating it relentlessly, which was probably my fault to begin with as you assemble it yourself when you order from Architect Knives. After all that it still slices paper cleanly and can shave hair off my arm, I've never had a knife hold up so well and remain so sharp.

    You too hey? I just got an Esee 6 and I've fallen in love with my knife. I also remember that you were a Becker guy, I too loved the Becker series of knives, but since I gotten my Esee 6, it's my go-to knife. I love EVERYTHING about my E6, I can't find a single thing wrong with this knife. I got the E6 with the blocky handles because I love those, and it reminds me of my RAT 7 the precursor to the E6. I think if Esee made their knives a bit more affordable, everybody would jump onboard the Esee wagon. I just happen to luck out and find a brand new E6 for $258, and yeah everything is expensive here in Canada. I swore that one day I would get an Esee and I finally got one. I honestly love mine so much, I sleep with the damn thing! Almost like a kid sleeping with his new toy after Christmas. Just like the original Ka-Bar, this knife will stand the test of time. My next knife will be the Junglas because I need a large chopper for the woods and my E6 for the smaller tasks. Before it used to be my BK9 for the heavier tasks and a smaller Ka-Bar/Becker for the smaller tasks but I'm so happy with my Esee that I gotta get the bigger one since it's slightly bigger than the Bk9. I want my gear to match.

    Architect Knives make beautiful knives and i was lucky enough to pick up a stunning Magnacut 6.5 as a camp knife, but I wish they would stop with the skeletonized tangs, it really lets down an otherwise perfect range of knives. I know they are probably plenty tough enough and its all about balance etc., but psychologically I cant get past a skeletonized tang being equivalent of a half tang and not a full.
