LITTLE KNOWN FACT: The car Diana was travelling in was a death-trap of a 1994 W140 Series Mercedes S280 with a chequered history (not S600 as seen in the video) and had been stolen by thieves in 1995 from its original owner, crashed and rolled a dozen times in a field (the offenders survived the accident) the car was condemned as scrap and sold by the insurance company - never to return to the road again, however was illegally rebuilt and somehow sold to the hotel for chauffeuring. Drivers at the Ritz Carlton some months before Diana stayed complained that the car was 'dangerous and highly unstable at speeds above 60kph/37mph'. The result was that the car lacked important functioning safety components including working crumple zones, air bag systems (both front and side) etc which could have helped prevent Diana's death. This infamous car earnt Mercedes-Benz a terrible and unwarranted reputation for building 'unsafe cars' when in fact the car was seriously compromised and had done its job crashing and protecting its occupants once before. Mercedes-Benz were also never allowed to ever inspect the car after the accident. It is alleged that this S280 suffered from 'brake failure' when crashing in the Alma tunnel a recurring theme with Diana, both her new Audi 80 Cabriolet and subsequently her new BMW e36 323i Coupe (N323GBY) both suffered from 'brake failure' earlier in 1995, her BMW had caused a low speed accident crashing into a Porsche and surprise surprise a FIAT.....Coincidence??? - R.I.P Princess Diana

Wasn’t she not wearing a seatbelt too? I’m sure that could of helped. Not to mention the idiots who designed that whole tunnel could of installed a guard barrier so people didn’t hit those pillars. But what do I know, I only have common sense.

We ask governments in all countries to unite bridge pillars as high as one or two meters so that if a car hits a bridge support it can still slide not as badly as a car hits a bridge pillar so that an accident hitting pillar like what happened to princess Diana does not happen again sorry and thank you.

She amazingly was actually conscious when taken from the car. She died of internal injuries as a result of the position (sideways), she was in at impact due to not wearing a seatbelt. Investigators put her chance at 80% had she done so, sadly she had not.

The pillars in the Alma tunel have rectangular section and not circular. Furthermore, the car hit the pole with the left side of the front grille, almost center head on. The deformation is also a bit too large in the driver's area. Anyway, the animation looks nice and it is interesting to see the theories behind the actual "crash" put into perspective.

I always thought it a miserable death for Diana. The flashing of the paparazzi in her eyes as she fades off into oblivion. Also it was a 6 cyl mercedes, not a v-12 as shown in the crash.

Rest in peace Princess. I remember watching this break out in the news in 1997. The world was stunned, just like with 9/11. Or when MJ died. You never forget where you were when these historical events occur. Also, as usual, the reanimation of the possible scenarios were awesome. You're work is so underrated.

How were they able to get the driver to hit this 13th pillar and not the 12th or 14th? Very simple! The W140 was one of the first sedans to feature electric power steering. It was enough to place a remote-controlled electric relay which would send a signal to steer fully to the left when it received an impulse... It was then enough to place the transmitter towards the 11th or 12th pillar and to arrange that the vehicle is launched at full speed... by means of paparazzi... the rest you know it... naturally, this relay was undoubtedly recovered from the wreckage discreetly before the experts could examine it: the slowness of the legal procedures having left ample time to do so...

I dont want to be funed, but my mom told to me that princess Diana's death was fault of queen Elizabeth II, i heard my mom saying that queen Elizabeth told his guards to crash on purpose. I say it again, without intention of offending.

The entrance of the tunnel dips underground it's not a flatroad so going in at 150 km/h instead of the 60 or 50 km/h speed limit of the time isn't the smartest of ideas. At the entrance the suspension unloads then toward the bottom the suspension compresses to the max at least at that rate of speed. It's a sure way to loose control drunk or not, with a wall on the right and square pillars every 10 meter or so on the left there's not much room for error.

But they are not dangerous, so you don't have to run away as if you were getting chased by a serial killer. Driving almost 100mph in a densely populated city like Paris is a death wish, plus they were on motorcycles, no way they could have shake them off. It was a really stupid decision on the part of all of those inside the Mercedes. I'm pretty sure there was curtains on the rear door windows and back window, so...

@@michael75884 I wrote something much shorter than you and you obviously didn't read it... I didn't say it was only the driver's fault nore that it's pleasant to be followed. Also I did some work for celebs, one of them in particular was being followed everywhere by paparazzi, they were there literally 24/7, the guy had 3 identical cars obviously with blacked out windows and sometimes he was taking the 3 out at once, each going in a different direction so the paparazzi wouldn't know which one to follow. We sometimes reminded them to not try to trespass even the slightest because cops would be called immediatly and charged pressed against them. And like I said I know the street where they crashed very well : No matter what car it was I don't think any car at that speed could make it. I don't think Henry Paul did know the feature of this street at this particular place otherwise he would have slow down and wait till after the tunnel to floor it.

The speed was pretty quickly found to not be as initially reported, which was 120 mph. Just like in the movies the speedometer needle was locked on 120 so it was leaked and reported as true. Very quickly Mercedes and many others pointed out as not reliable for a conclusion. Several scenario's including the rear wheels could have lifted reducing or eliminating any grip and spun in the air at impact. Now I believe the consensus is more along the lines of 60-70mph.

I just bougth a trailer that has 6 year old tires nd the first thing im doing is changing them. Ive had multiple people tell me, "theyhave good tread." Im like, yea so? They are 6 years old. People are just ignoring to how rubber deteriorates over time and grip levels will decrease significantly with old rubber. How a "race car driver" could be willing to drive that fast with 9 year old tires is beyond anything i could comprehend.
