One of the most brutal crash ever! I saw that crash when I was about 12 years old, my heart almost stopped... truly horrifying. Very realistic recreation! R.I.P. Wyder

I remember seeing the helicopter footage of this crash at the time. He only survived because he was thrown clear. His injuries, particularly his legs were absolutely horrific.

I am in shock you actually covered this. I watched this happen from the helicopter camera over shot and it broke my heart. Marc Surer was a Ayrton Senna level talent and was on his way to being an absolute legend in auto racing. I just could not believe the only two trees in that whole area was where the car went. Surer was fighting the whole way with no traction and hit those trees at full force. The crash was just horrific. It took years for Marc to heal but he returned to racing and actually won the German Touring car championship with two other drivers in 1994 and 1995. Marc continues to announce racing events and has done well. A life well lived and still being lived from an absolutely horrific moment in time. You just cannot believe the force of that impact.

This is in my opinion one of the most chilling crashes of the Group B Era. The other being Joaquim Santos and Henri Toivonen. It's interesting to think that 1986 was when they noticed the potential issues with having these supercars on winding rally tracks, and out of of control spectators. This what I only describe as the "Devil's Trinity" showed all the things that can go wrong. Santos' crash shwed what happens when overpowered cars loses control in a crowded, uncontrolled area. Toivonen's crash showed what extremely long rally stages with overly powerful cars does. And Surer's crash... how really unsafe they were. I'm aware that Toivonen's S4 burst into flames and killed both him and Sergio Cresto. But this is different, this time the spectators were shown exactly how something like that happens. And watching all three this day gives me chills. I think it's stupid to rank them, because we're talking about people losing lives here, but the fact that the cars were so overpowered that the human brain cannot keep up, how these cars caused harm, even after they were banned... Makes the era more interesting, and something to learn from.

The same thing happened to ari vatanen in argentina in 1983 when his Peugeot 205 suddenly lost traction in the rear on a high speed straightaway and spun off into a tree at 140 mp/h. It's the reason why the 205 Turbo 16 Evo that came into use the next season had that giant ducktail spoiler on the back of the car.

Really a hidden gem of a channel. Keep doing these as you can, excellent videos.

1985-86 were quite bad years in motorsport: among with Wyder fatal accidents took the lives of Attilio Bettega, Lee Shepherd, Manfred Winkelhock, Stefan Bellof, Toivonen & Cresto, Elio de Angelis, Jo Gartner to name few most known names.

Both of these crashes were in the group b season, with less safety than they have now I was extremely shocked to find out that the driver survived almsot unscathed, that’s because Michel park died of a door side accident just from a hard collision just like marc suruer got into, I was wondering even with more safety in the new gen how did Michel park die but not Marc? HE LEGIT GOT FLUNG OUT

Well made video, no question👍 Please don't take this as criticism, just for info. The name Surer is pronounced in the linguistic s instead of sh, like safe. He himself says he probably touched something lightly beforehand, it was definitely a puncture. It is also interesting that a marshal pulled it into a small stream next to the track and deleted it, otherwise it would not have survived. Thank you for sharing your work with us. I'm pretty sure the accident happened at Hockenheim circuit (rally went through it apparently) and I believe it was caused by a puncture.

Yes about the puncture, but a no-no on Hockenheim. It happened in Hessen, Hockenheim is in Baden-Württemberg.
