They're singing "I'm about to punch" which gives the opponent about 40 milliseconds (ms) more time to react to the punch. Light is faster than sound but how the body is wired to the brain, and the distances we're talking about here, sound reaches the brain faster than what we see. So a person who is in the habit of making a sound with their strikes unknowingly is giving the advantage to their opponent even though the opponent has no idea about the science of reaction times. The 40 ms is only 4% of a second. Seems like nothing. Consider though a good puncher with no telegraph in punch range will hit in about 200 ms. That's the start of the punch until it hits about full arm extension (anything closer is obviously going to reach faster). So now the 40 is 20% of what we're dealing with. It's giving a 20% advantage to the opponent even when the puncher and the 'punchee' have no idea of the sound vs sight reaction time differences.

Holy crap!!! You just validated what I always thought was silly . I have watched tons of boxing videos and always wondered why so many would hiss out their punches The explanation was it extenuated their punches and reminded them to breath . I never understood that explanation as my thought was” of you control what you’re doing and develop good technique and build proper cardio ,you won’t forget to breath and will be able to function .” Thank you again for the sound advice. I’d like to think that at 49 years of age I learned a thing or two listening to sound advice and learning from trial and error .

I just got the same advice from one of the old school trainers at my gym, definitely makes a lot of sense, as doing it loudly telegraphs yourself and often wastes energy. Also, I think that not doing it so loudly helps stamina too, as a lot of the boxers you trained with could go 15 rounds without much effort, compared to a lot of fighters nowadays who get tired in round 9 or 10 and are unable to keep the same pace for 12 rounds. Ali, Duran, arguello were special.

Breathe but breathe quietly. Sometimes through extra effort I used to vocalise a punches. Paul, I feel things changing and changing for the better. All of us have to take a little faith and reject the cynicism which has been shoved down our collective throat over the past few years. We have to remember and act by, Faith, Hope and Charity.....peace on earth and goodwill toward all people. I was looking through my music collection the other day and found a favourite I haven't heard for a while, Gato Barbieri's 1973 album Bolivia. What a thing of beauty it is. All the best Paul, regards, Jeff.

I think that is something brought over from other arts. I know Muay Thai fighters can get pretty loud with their strikes, and I learned the hiss from Uechi Ryu Karate. I don't really use it much anymore, it was just helpful when I was learning how to move and breathe simultaneously.

People always say its about using your breathing to help in your exertion, the same way that you can lift more weight if you exhale during the push. Are you referring to the exhaling during the punch, or just the intentional sounds like hissing and yelling? This is the first video I've watched of yours, and I appreciate how you got to the point so quickly. Lots of KZreadrs would make a 20 minute video on the subject.

Still you can breath deep being silent and persistent... Plus one-hit-one-breath is not the only technique; though it's a good one, it helps focusing and concentrating, there is apnea, there is One two three four five deliver punches then exale, and son on, there is no ultimate technique speaking on sports, progress is always coming so just keep working hard and learning from the good ones...

Meanwhile watch some of the old school champs that I mentioned in this video . They breath without thinking about it... It is NATURAL! It should be NATURAL with little to no focus. You have enough to do, FOCUSING on the opponent *. Breath as needed, in the nose out the mouth, should not be thought about... You DO want to NOTICE if you are HOLDING your breath, as pressure, and stress will make this to happen, and that ain't good. So do try to catch your self if the pressure of stress causes you to NO breath naturally ***. Learn to relax (so important) and be a natural animal ! Animals don't think about breathing when fighting ! I hope that helps? Your Pal Paul D'Antuono

Wow man, this is great advice I have seen videos on other peoples channels saying to make some noise so you don't forget to breath when your punching, and I thought, get the hell outta here, who's gonna forget to breath if they wanna keep livin, great advice though Professor better to keep your breathing to yourself, and not telegraph your intentions to your opponent huh!?!

Lol 5 de mayo, I'm sure from your tone it's meant to be humorous, and it was, fricking died man, I've always believed the philosophy you preached, sugar ray Robison said, every move you make starts with your heart, and that’s in rhythm or you’re in trouble. Your rhythm should set the pace of the fight. If it does, then you penetrate your opponent’s rhythm. You make him fight your fight, and that’s what boxing is all about. Also I'm not sure which boxer told me, or if someone that gave me a lesson in fighting/boxing, but that person said, if I can hear you/it I can see you/it coming. Great Vid.

@@PunchProfessor nah don't worry about it old man, plenty of Americans believe 5 Demayo is the 4th of July for us, independence day, and its especially humorous that they pronounce it, as if it were mayonnaise, but it doesn't take much to understand that you were in a way mocking yourself in a playful manner to get a good laugh, to purposely enunciate it with acknowledgement that you know that you might be wrong, however, in a tone where you also are in a way humorously mocking the fact that we don't really share much of independence day to other cultures, its huge in Mexico, great parties, but if you don't ask we will most likely never tell someone, but merica is merica, everyday is 4th of July. "Did you Merica today?"

I think it's believed that hard exhaling at the moment of effort injects more power into the punch. Some even believe hard, hissing breathing might instil fear. I think it might be another way of telegraphing a punch though.

JoeiTheGiggityGuy * * * * * 5 Stars for You ~ Not a snarky person no matter what you say = I already know that ! Now not that this matters as to what I was saying and what I was saying is that the OLD TIMERS never made noise, this was introduced to Boxing in the 1970's... Karate became big in the U.S.A. in the 70s = Bruce Lee and such, the braking of boards and screaming then kinda flowed over to boxing (my opinion) ! The Old School Fighters never needed it ! Did they lack anything? Were they not as good as they could possibly be without it? Many greats today don't do NOISE ! Are they missing something? O.K. Mayweather does emit sound, but surly not on every punch*** When he does, it is intermittent and almost always with the same strength as he never shows signs of braking down / losing energy ! In fact much more of his punches are silent ! Now Lomo (Spelling his name is to much for me) I AIN'T watched a bunch of him. but I don't think he makes any noise / he's mostly silent ! On some highlight videos he seems to make noise, but it is sound effects added (I think) Videos put out by the promoters sometimes do this adding noises to punches and such... But even if he does make noise that ain't what I am saying .... Watch Alexis Arguello fights, as he taught us his experience ! Then name the old school great of your liking and notice they never needed it to become as great as they were *** This is a subject worth a follow up video ! Sincerely appreciate You Paul D'Antuono
