FUN FACT is that Abd-Al Malik proposed to Sebastian a peace treaty before the battle. He was ready to offer him lands in Morocco. Sebastian thought that it was because moroccan were weak so he pushed. Finally Abd-Al Malik has my huge respect. As a Portuguese I consider this battle as the darkest in my country's history as the direct result of this was the lost of independence of Portugal to Spain. Though I admit that Morocco was indeed the worthy to win this battle. King Sebastian arguably was as brave as Sultan Malik, but he was not as wise as him. Abandoning a coastal campaign in Morocco, conquered important ports with the support of one the most powerful navies of the time, posicioning the army in such a way where flanks and the rear were exposed and not scouting the area... Too many bad calls As a Portuguese this is a battle that saddens me... But as someone that loves history, to see a Sultan, with a younger brother that was his friend and loyal to him, going to battle half dead and engaging actively in battle... Now that goes to the hall of fame The Portuguese Empire lasted until 1999, with the handover of Macau to China... But no matter what nation empire or realm there will always be someone whom by ignorance or naive destroys the hopes and dreams of their people and their country

This story is a lot more complicated than what this Americanized history teller is saying. You realize that Abu Abdallah Mohammed II Saadi lost his throne in 1576 and fled to Portugal he was close friends with Sebastian and the main reason Sebastian went to help him regain his throne. This whole Battle was a shit show of Kings battling over their own right to rule. The deal was to open up more economic routes to Portugal through Morocco if he would regain his crown. I don't see any talk about the Moroccan forces on Sebastian's side...This whole war was a bad idea For Sebastien he should not have helped Abu Abdallah and his forces. He did not even have an heir to the throne if he were to die which he did.

Going to battle knowing the mere physical exertion will seal your fate. Painfully struggling and clinging to every extra second, to ensure the survival of your people at the cost of yours. To have such a reliable brother, whom you shared thick and thin with, who keeps proving your trust till your last breath. To die only when the outcome you sought is secured, but still not late enough to witness it. I came here for strategy, not all these feels. This is 10 times better and more sentimental than modern day fictional soap operas. Imagine the men's euphoria of victory, and the immediate tragic shock afterwards when they reallized their king died, and how he died.

When I saw that Sebastian rushed his army to the open and pulled a squared-shape formation, that brought me memories of Crassus at the battle of Carhae (Rome x Parthia, round 1, Parthia wins, flawless victory). From that moment on I knew that Sebastian failed big time. Also, praise to Al-Malik. His strategy turned out very similar to what general Surena used against Crassus at carhae: circling the enemy square and shooting at it non-stop. Awesome video. Is it asking to much for a video on the rebellion of the ukrainian cossacks? This is a theme I rarely see in YT history channels...

Crassus's box makes sense for the shitty situation he is in though. He cant match the mobility of the Parthians and his own cavalry and skirmishers are outnumbered. The only thing he can really do is to wait out the storm of arrows (which of course never stopped raining because Surena is a genius in this battle) The Parthian army is an alien force to Rome and fight unlike the ones they have ever seen before. He was labeled a fool because Roman politics likes to regard defeated generals as inept or the enemy as unfair savages. Sebastian on the other hand has time to redeploy his army to a much better position. But nope, he arrayed his men on the open in box formation then he ordered his best troops to charge to their deaths. And on his final attempt to kill the Moroccan king he repeated his mistake earlier by charging out with a small force of horsemen. Also, he literally bankrupted himself and Portugal but he can only field 20000 troops and still expect to conquer an empire. His crusade failed before it even sailed from Portugal.

Morocco and Portugal have a long military history in common: Conquest of southern Portugal by the Almoravids and Almohads from the end of the 11th to the beginning of the 13th century, then Portuguese conquest of the Moroccan ports (Assilah, Mogador, Mazagan, Tangier) in the 15th and 16th century, then recovery of the majority of them by the Saadians which ended with the battle of the 3 kings (end of 16th century) and finally departure of the Portuguese from their last colony in Mazagan in the 18th century . Another characteristic in common: welcoming and very hospitable people. portugal is my favorite country for holidays

During the period where brothers would murder and betray each other for the slightest chance of getting the throne, the loyalty and brotherhood shown by Al Manshur to his brother Al Malik was exemplary. Al Malik himself was also a great figure. Imagine leading a decisive battle while having a body that was being eaten away by disease, only days away from death yet still able to muster enough willpower to stand and lead from the front against the mighty crusaders. On the other side, Sebastian's bravery was also really impressive. Outnumbered and outmaneuvered, he never lost his wit and decided to carry on to the death. Despite his rash political maneuvers he was an exemplary Christian warrior-king, leading the troops from the frontline and showing great ambitions although at the end there had to be only one winner. Thanks HM for bringing this awesome mini series.

Maybe it's a failure of the sources to not explain why but what a dunce was Sebastian that he didn't advance to aid his cavalry when they were pressing the Moroccans? Abd Al- Malik is an absolute legend for fighting on his deathbed like that. Big respect for his brother too. All too often, because of loose succession practices, Muslim ruling families had bad records of sibling cooperation.

Ahmed Al Mansur is actually one of the most successful moroccan sultans as well. He lead the conquest of the songhai empire and made morocco a superpower. But then he died, and Morocco went a huge succession crisis and fell into turmoil.

King Sebastian respected 3 days request and died noble as noble as King Ab-el-Malik. We kept in mind as Moroccans a very profound respect to the Portuguese as they put everything they had in this war, they fought with ethics and honor the battle was an honor and now everyone is dead including the winners. As a Brazilian, it's really amazing seeing the historical origin of the famous mystic "Sebastian Cult" that arose in Portugal after the fall of the King. It's really amazing seeing that even in Brazil, there were some evidences of this "cult" of the return of the "Just King Sebastian" that became a symbol of revolt both in Portugal during the Iberian Union and in Brazil up to the 19th century. There is a literary piece written by Ariano Suassuna, that tells the history of a Sebastian Cult in a small village of Brazilian Northeast, in which Sabastian becomes the symbol of revolt against the Algarves Dinasty, during the Empire of Brazil, seeing as a corrupt political dynasty: the book is called The Stone of the Kingdom, as free translation from Portuguese "A Pedra do Reino". Anyway, amazing to see a historical event becoming a icon of the lusitanian cultural universe, across time and oceans...

@Overlord Chappa the colonialists from the islamic world ??? bitch what you talking about .. Morocco IS AN ISLAMIC country .. we re .. we was .. and w will always be .. the problem now is the result of colonialists of France back in the 20th century .. and they still putting some loyal leaders for them to rule business in morocco .. so you can say that we re still under their colonisation .. and you re a result of what they want to creat ..
