Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212) DOCUMENTARY

Reconquista is one of the most remarkable events in history. By 718 Islamic Invasion reached and then took over most of the Pyrenees, save for a remote region in the north. Spanish and Portuguese people fought for almost 800 years to reconquer the Christian lands, and that long struggle built them up and allowed to grow into empires that dominated the world for a few more centuries. This is a documentary on the general events of Reconquista and the decisive battle of Las Navas De Tolosa that took place in 1212 between the alliance of Aragon, Castile, Portugal, Navarre, knightly orders of Santiago, Calatrava, Templars and the Almohad Caliphate.

Its like justin beiber is a glorified bastard, but no one today mocks him for that, no one today mocks the celebs for their adultery and fornications and homosexuality. maybe hundreds of years after if people get conservative they will mock them, just like thousands of years after prophet you love to call him as pedophil.

I am an atheist, so, of course, what I think will be insulting for you. Religion is a good excuse to attack and invade, and it always has been this way. The idea that Arab/Berber lords were different just because they belonged to a particular religion is illogical. People invade and conquer. They did it before religions fully formed, and they did that even after they embraced atheism. That needs to stop and change.

nurrrik & phoenix it is really insulting for me, because you think it will be insulting for me. But bro we cool i dont want to argue unless you want to, i love history too. And i also like to argue. People fight for religion like muslims. People fight despite being atheists like communist countries like north korea, russia, poi pot stalin you know what i mean. What i wanted to know is what you think? I think those were not fought for religion. If they were fought for religion they wouldnt fight amongst each other. The only religious war that any country is always willing to fight is Israel. If you cant make the oldest religious people become completely atheist you shouldn't be optimistic about anything. Since they are more advanced in science and technology you would not say anything about them that would be insulting towards them!

By European standards of the time, the Spanish Christian kingdoms were very cultured due to constant interaction with a wider world than most of Europe was accustomed to at the time. Alfonso X "The Wise" of Castille would in the decades shortly after this battle turn Toledo into a center of literary collection and translation. As was expected of an Iberian king that has to navigate extremely complex relationships between communities, he was educated in Hebrew, Arabic, and Latin. These monarchs were in constant contact with the far-off coasts on the other side of the Mediterranean and the cold coasts of Northern Europe. The fact that many small Moorish kingdoms became vassals of Castille brought further contacts with the Islamic world. Castillians ordered their vassals to come to Toledo and copy their libraries there.

Millions of Muslims in the Middle East either secretly converted to Christianity or became atheists. Mostly because they are able to read the Quran and the Hadith now freely and question them on the basis of logic and morality. The apostates of Islam don't make this public, because then they would have to be executed according to Quran and Hadith: Sura 4:89 "They wish that you should reject faith as they reject faith, and then you would be equal; therefore take not to yourselves friends of them, until they emigrate in the way of God; then, if they turn their backs, take them, and slay them wherever you find them; take not to yourselves any one of them as friend or helper." (keep in mind Sura 4:65 in which ALlah commands full submission to his orders in the Quran) Sura 9:11-12 "But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then are they your brethren in religion. We detail Our revelations for a people who have knowledge. And if they break their pledges after their treaty (hath been made with you) and assail your religion, then fight the heads of disbelief - Lo! they have no binding oaths - in order that they may desist." Sahih Bukhari Volume 4, Book 52, Number 260: Narrated Ikrima: Ali burnt some people and this news reached Ibn 'Abbas, who said, "Had I been in his place I would not have burnt them, as the Prophet said, 'Don't punish (anybody) with Allah's Punishment.' No doubt, I would have killed them, for the Prophet said, 'If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him.' " Sahih Bukhari (84:57) - [In the words of] "Allah's Apostle, 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'" Sahih Bukhari (89:271) - A man who embraces Islam, then reverts to Judaism is to be killed according to "the verdict of Allah and his apostle." al-Muwatta of Imam Malik (36.18.15)- "The Messenger of Allah said, "If someone changes his religion - then strike off his head." Reliance of the Traveller (Islamic Law) o8.1 - "When a person who has reached puberty and is sane voluntarily apostatizes from Islam, he deserves to be killed." Sura 16:101 And when We subtitute a verse in place of a verse - and Allah is most knowing of what He sends down - they say, "You, (O Muhammad), are but an inventor (of lies)." But most of them do not know.

@@faizanhashmi389 despite their untouchable reputation, Abu Bakr ibn Ibrahim ibn Tashfin and Yusef's nephew Abu 'Abdullah Muhammad both failed to defeat El Cid. Yusef then sent Abu'l-Hasan 'Ali al-Hajj, but he was not successful either. In 1097, on his fourth trip to al-Andalus, Yusef sought to personally dig down and fight the armies of Alfonso VI, making his way towards the all but abandoned, yet historically important, Toledo. Such a concerted effort was meant to draw the Christian forces, including those laying siege to Valencia, into the center of Iberia. On August 15, 1097, the Almoravids delivered yet another blow to Alfonso's forces, a battle in which El Cid's son was killed. Muhammad ibn 'A'isha, Yusef's son, whom he had appointed governor of Murcia, succeeded in delivering an effective pounding to the Cid's forces at Alcira; still not capturing the city, but satisfied with the results of his campaigns, Yusef left for his court at Marrakesh, only to return two years later in a new effort to take the provinces of eastern al-Andalus. El Cid had died in the same year, 1099, and his wife Jimena had been ruling until the coming of another Almoravid campaign at the tail end of 1100, led by Yusef's trusted lieutenant Mazdali ibn Tilankan. After a seven-month siege, Alfonso and Jimena, despairing of the prospects of staving off the Almoravids, set fire to the great mosque in anger and abandoned the city. Yusef had finally conquered Valencia achieving dominance over eastern al-Andalus. He receives mention in the oldest Spanish epic Poema del Cid, also known as El Cantar del Mio Cid.

Thank you for watching. To be honest, I created this video due to the nostalgia feels. I spent part of my honeymoon in Barcelona and what happened there 2 weeks ago made me incredibly sad and angry. And the fact that ISIS claimed that it is some kind of retribution for the Reconquista was the last drop. Such a beautiful city, how can anyone be there and not fall in love with it? Anyways, unfortunately, I don't have enough viewers from Spain and Portugal, so if you have a chance, please, share the video on your social networks.

Provocateur: Unlike in the movies, battles aren't over in five minutes, they could go an entire day. Or even longer. Soldiers didn't battle like a great big streetfight either, ideally men were getting rotated in and out of the battle. So usually they had time to ask their neighbors what was going on. But you are right in the fact that it was very hard to know what was going on other than right in your vicinity. Just the other day I was reading a medieval historian writing about how the soldiers knew absolutely everything that happened in the battle THE DAY AFTER it was over. Immediately after the battle they don't know squat other than what they saw for themselves. Great point you made. Hope I wasn't patronizing you with the explanation...on this site you could be a Professor of Military History at West Point or you could be a sixteen year old who likes Game of Thrones, so I may have overexplained.

@@KingsandGenerals When naming kings of Aragon you should use they translated names if not the original. I am saying this because in this video you name Peter II of Aragon "Pedro", which is the Spanish translation. Spanish was not even official in the crown of Aragon, and most of its monarchs where culturally catalan, so the name should be "Pere" or maybe in this case "Pero". The rest of kings signed as Jaume, Alfons or Anfós, Pere, Joan, Martí... It feels like an anachronism to give them Spanish names as they where not (modern Spanish is what used to be called Castilian). Love your videos, by the way!

For the record, I would like to point out some significant inaccuracies in the video: 2:25 What we know about Pelagio of Asturias points out that he was actually a Hispanic-Roman noble from a family with a very probably Asturian background. He was not basque. And the stories about Pelagio descending from a Visigothic king were written centuries later, mainly to strenghthen the position of the Castilian and Leonese monarchies and so as to lend some propagandistic support to the Kingdom of Castille - seen as the "heir" of the old Visigothic Kingdom - by validating in the eyes of the people its wars during the late stage of the muslim presence in the Iberian Peninsula. Also, the borders of the Asturian Kingdom have been drawn too shifted to the east. 4:03 During the period 824-924 a.C., Burgos (and the rest of the county of Castille) remained as a Leonese territory. It was not until the XI century when Sancho III Garcés (King of Navarre) took control of the county of Castille. 5:52 The intervention of Sancho III Garcés in the Kingdom of Leon is still an object of discussion. It is mainly meant nowadays to have been made to support the ruling of child-king Bermudo III (nephew of Sancho III). After the intervention, it was Urraca (mother-in-law of Bermudo III, sister of Sancho III) who assumed the regency of the kingdom, supported by the remaining Leonese nobles who were still loyal to them. With almost entire security, it was therefore the response of a help request based on the existing familial alliance between Urraca and Sancho, not a truly conquest. Also, Bermudo III is not related to the divison of Sancho III's domains among his sons, because he was not actually his grandson; he was son of the first wife of the previous king of Leon (Alfonso V) not a direct descendant of Sancho III. 7:00 After the battle of Sagrajas, Toledo was still held by Alfonso VI - despite he had lost the most part of his army - because the almoravid emir Yusuf ibn Tasufin returned to Africa inmediately when he heard about the dead of his son. Obviously, not such a large territory was lost by Alfonso VI - he almost did not lost any of it, actually. 7:30 The northern Leonese-Portugese border has been drawn too shifted to the north. Finally, I must say I would have liked to watch a bit more about the battle itself, the previous movements of Sancho trying to cross Sierra Morena, the castles attacked before and after the battle, how the french crusaders abandoned the allied army because Alfonso VIII denied them to slaughter the defenders of Calatrava (Spanish are not always the most intolerants, you see), the murder of Muhámmed an-Násir as a result of his complete failure, ... Talking less about the beginnings of the Kingdom of Asturias and more about the expansion of the Almohad Caliphate in the Iberian peninsule, the internal revolts, the disintegration of the Caliphate or a more detailed coment on the battle of Alarcos would have lead to make the content more relevant, too. Although I love your vids, I think you have tried to compress a too long period in just a few minutes, allocating few time for the battle itself and the related events, making this video not so consistent and compelling as others.

False, you did not have an empire. You only had commercial ports in some cities. You did not rule any country, but just some cities. And Brazil was initially conquered by Spain buy was GIVEN to you as a consequence of the Tratado de Tordesillas. Spain left 25 UNESCO World Heritage sites in their Empire. What did you leave there? Nothing. Because your only goal was economic.

They pronounce all Spanish words with a very heavy English accent, but that's natural for someone who doesn't speak Spanish. Theirs is not even the worst, I remember an American speaker pronouncing "de" (in Spanish) as "dee" (in English). Generally, English or German accents sound particularly funny in Spanish, I think it is mostly the English "e" and the English or German "r" (both sound horrible in Spanish, but the German r particularly). Speakers of most other European languages (sans French) can usually roll the "r", so their accents don't sound as funny in Spanish.

I sense a bit of racism when you talk about Muslims in Spain and you fail to mention that Muslims in Spain where the richest of their kind and that the richest part of Europe was Islamic Spain. Islam in Spain arrived on interracial marriages and conversion of natives, while the other side that was racist calls for purification on blood and the initiation of confession torture sessions. if you want to know what those confession torture sessions looked like please go and watch the movie Braveheart while muslims allowed non-muslims to thrive. let's not forget the contributions Muslims have done in Spain which was the pavement of Europe to exist the dark ages through science and engineering and the innovation. the fall of Islamic Spain was like the fall of Carthage at the hand of the Romans. it was a bloody Holocaust. if you were to do a DNA test right now to the Arabs and the natives of North Africa you will find a third at least of them are having Spanish blood. a compensation and retribution is due to those people.

Great videos K&G, one little thing to notice though. Pelagius (Don Pelayo in Spanish) was not a vascon, vascones did not resist because they did not live in the mountains. Pelagius was an Astur, who did live among the mountains of what today is called Asturias. There has been controversy over if Pelagius was a former Visigotic king or an Hispano-roman, and the evidence of his name tips the balance over an hispano-roman origen. But in anyway, he was not vascon but astur. On another topic, I think it would be of interest if you could tell us the number of troops in each side of the armies, it is my understanding that until Spanish armies were big enough they suffered losses at the hands of troop which sometimes double their size.
