BATTLE OF LAS NAVAS DE TOLOSA - A TURNING POINT IN THE CHRISTIAN FIGHT AGAINST THE MUSLIMS OF IBERIA

In 1212 the pivotal Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa was about to begin. The Christian fight against the Muslims, the reconquest of Hispania, was under threat. Muslim invaders from North Africa, the Almohad, had arrived in force. Alfonso VIII had already been defeated by them at the Battle of Alarcos, but he now had a chance for redemption. 17 years later, in what became a crusade against Islam of the Iberian Peninsula, our warrior king was to fight on.

    The shield of Navarra shows yellow chains all across a red background. This has to do with the fact That Al Nasir's tent was surrounded by a chain which the Navarrese knights cut in order to attack his position. The chain was then taken by Sancho VII back to Navarra and they became the symbol of the kingdom.

  • @FlashPointHx

    @FlashPointHx

    I'm happy that you liked the podcast! I think the Almohads were living on borrowed time. Had the won at Las Navas and had the commitment to REALLY invade the north, they may have severally damaged the Christian states and held off the Reconquista for another 100 years. But their power base in North Africa was about to fall and they would have been consumed in the end by civil war. As for the Ottomans, I might be making a short series to cover them - a bonus episode just about the fall of Constantinople in 1453. This video is part of a story arch that should cover the Spanish Monarchy and then Cortez and the Aztec.

For fox ache, just cut (at least, attack) his supplies and let him enjoy his nice lil' hill as long as your supplies keep coming. once the enemy scout your mules and sherpas (IF they do), you can still attack uphill like an idiot. and where is your light cavalry to own all the routing noobz and to scout and to hit and ru... sigh... yes indeed and al nasir will die 1 years after las navas de tolosa, do you know the story of al nasir with the king jean? In the early 13th century, John, King of England was under pressure after a quarrel with Pope Innocent III led to England being placed under an interdict, by which all forms of worship and other religious practices were banned. John himself was excommunicated, parts of the country were in revolt and there were threats of a French invasion. Writing two decades after the events, Matthew Paris, a St Albans chronicler of the early thirteenth century, claims that, in desperation, John sent envoys to al-Nâsir asking for his help. In return John offered to convert to Islam and turn England into a Muslim state. Among the delegates was Master Robert, a London cleric. Al-Nâsir was said to be so disgusted by John’s grovelling plea that he sent the envoys away.

Sorry for bad English

    You don´t mention how the French knights and other foreigners started killing Jews in Toledo?? so they were expulsed by Alfonso VIII, they went back to France, reducing the Christian numbers in the desperate and upcoming fight. Also the Charge of the Three Kings, maybe it´s propaganda, but anyway awesome and epic as few moments in Medieval History hahaha....

    How can the Christian army from the whole Europe in "Las Navas de Tolosa" be smaller than the previous Spanish one in "Alarcos"? So much to say here, Almohads fought against the whole Europe and "logically" were outnumbered by the Christians, but still not the reason of their defeat! Greetings!

    Basically because european crusaders didn't fight in the battle, they went back their own countries when the spaniards didn't let them to slaughter the jews in Toledo.

    Plenty of factors to take into account, the nature of the terrain, the quality of the troops and commanders, logistics, weather etc. Having a larger army may not necessarily be an advantage, it may in fact counterproductive if it strains resources and logistics while been of poor military value or facing a smaller but better trained, drill and lead army.
