@@walid8108 My buddy and I flew into Casablanca and then went up to Rabat, across to Fez (seeing Volubolis), then to the Western Sahara via the Valley of Ziz and Merzouga. Then past Erfoud to Ouazazate and onwards to Marrakesh - before getting back to Casablanca - we were out there for a few weeks.

Only the Almohad originated in Morocco. The Almoravids came from Mauritania and Senegal but established their Capital in Morocco.

Definitely! HxMarche has some insane skills and I can tell by his work that he is a perfectionist like me.

Much like the Abbasids did to the Umayyads when they overthrew that previous dynasty, the Almojads put all the male members of the Almoravids to the sword when they took power. That ruthlessly, but effectively, eliminated future opposition from that quarter.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this series!I can't find one on the Marinids, but I would LOVE to see one on that dynasty as well.

Huxley calling righteous harm as a moral treat seems like it fits this era, and by extension human nature. It is a great reminder in the current climate of "return to monke" movements that our nature does have ugly sides we need to constantly rise above.

I feel like this example, along with examples we see today, religious fanaticism provides minimal gain. All it does is push your enemies to be just as zealous and vicious as you so it creates this cycle of increasing animosity. I would say Abdur Rahman III's rule also proves that religious cohesion is superior. When the Muslims allowed the Jews and Christians to flourish, the Muslims themselves gained off their work, and they were definitely crucial in creating the Al-Andalus golden age.

We will see this even more during the Almoravids and the Almohads - and for the Christian side, the crusade mentality will really take hold. A vicious cycle that will eventually spill over to the new world.

Note that there may be a mistake on the maps and the berber tribe : the Masmuda and Zenata tribes may have been inverted. The zenatas are the berbers tribes of the north of Morocco (the one from which most of Merinids were from). The Masmuda are the berbers from central Morocco ie the Atlas mountain from where the Almohads launched their movements.

A lot of people dont talk about it, but the masmuda berbers were also responsible for establishing the hafsid dynasty in what is now tunisia, libya and algeria.

What we had was Jihad vs. Crusade. The Jihad has been going on since the early 8th century here in Spain, and the 7th century in the East. Christians were killed and enslaved for several hundred years. That's why we had Crusades.

Enjoying the podcast at the moment, you mention something that made me think. There is a long history of holy war. Following the concept of holy war as a throughline in a series might be very interesting.

I agree, however another fan pointed out that he did not feel that there was such a thing as holy war prior to the Crusades. I don’t exactly agree with this opinion. I think that the biggest difficulty in identifying what holy war is, is the definition of holy war itself. It’s different depending on which person you ask. I’m curious what you would have in mind when you speak of the history of holy war. Where would you start? Who would you identify?.

@@FlashPointHx It's a very good question and could make for a challenging doctoral dissertation. There are a lot of points to touch on to do this question any justice and tough to put together as a response in a concise KZread comment. It seems as though the Western crusades were a religiously driven response to the initial expansion of Islam. Like you say, whether we can call that initial growth of Islam as a 'holy war' is up for debate - I too would like to learn more before applying the term. I do think however, there is a greater discussion of monotheism and its affect on the human psyche. Does a cultures belief in a singular God make them more warlike? Does it become easier to ascribe the supernatural will of a God to ones side in battle as opposed to the will of multiple gods? Further questions would be if there are examples of military expansion under other monotheistic cultures before Islam? If not, was there some sort of spark for some sort of backlash propelling religious war and what were they? Did Constantine's embrace of Christianity have any lasting impact on cultures to the east? Ultimately I only have more questions but I do think there is something within the discussion that is very intriguing and you indirectly deal with in your videos on religious wars. There's my 2 cents on that, I will leave you to mull them over. Always looking forward to your upcoming creations!

The further I go into this series, the more historical landmines I find. Was there tolerance in Islamic Spain? Why did the Crusades happen? I always want to drop my own opinion - but I find myself stopping short and trying to stick to the idea of keeping the historical narrative going. I personally think that the concept of a God - either polytheistic or monotheistic is an extension of the people who created them. What is it that Mark Twain said? "God created man in his own image, and man (being a gentleman) did likewise." Aggression, apprehension of the unknown, attempting to explain the natural world, and curiosity all got baked into that creation of a divine being - a primary mover. I think it is also a natural aspect of a civilization to perceive itself as being better that its peers and thus its God will need to be the same. War against her neighbors is an extension of that. For the definition of Holy War, I'd say St Augstine of Hippo's City of God has a decent explanation - but alas each question you ask above is a pHD thesis and not easily addressed in a youtube comment section. I do agree that the more one looks into these questions, the more questions are generated. Love your insight Ed, hope to hear more from you in the future! @@endo_kun_da

Sorry to say, but there was never going to be a part 4 for the crusade - I covered the First Crusade just as a bonus episode to give my listeners an idea of what was going on, on the other end of the Mediterranean. The history of Spain has been my focus.

I am Coptic orthodox grew up I Egypt . I have been visiting many European countries . Spain was one of them I visited four times till now . I heard a lot about religious tolerance in Islamic Spain . To me it is not different at all from what I lived in Egypt . Yes, in Cairo the capital we live next to each other peacefully and close and we make friends with each other BUT you know and they know and the states law that we are second degree citizens . Certain jobs ,like in military , police, government,universities,legislative institutions, we are ((almost )) forbidden to think to apply even if someone proved to be better for the job than his fellow Muslim . Leave the capital and go to upper Egypt or any rural areas and you will find real harassment , kidnapping young girls to force them into Islam ,some eras in the long history they kill fellow Christians in the neighborhoods if refused Islam as religion. Till this time we are relatively protected by the military command under the new president . Christians in Egypt submit to a dictator military background president just to protect themselves from Islamic fanatics. So Please Please Be very conservative and cautious when western historians use the word Religious Tolerance of Islamic Spain!!

I've travelled my entire life and have experienced the culture that surrounds some 'Islamic' countries - like Morocco, Egypt, UAE etc. They have a poignant history that has decisively affected the modern world (like any major religion for good and bad). Yet, Its an aspect of history that seems to get blinked over and marginalized in the west. Sadly, it is also now pigeon holed into its more radical elements and scapegoated. From what I've seen in the form of documentaries - very little is evenly balanced.

We still have holy wars we just dont call them that in the secular world. WW2 is often talked about as a holy war. Eisenhower called D-Day 'Th Great Crusade'.

for the almoravide and almohade their home was not only morroco but also the west part of algeria ,also it's not accurate to split the origins of these empires with regards of today's countries as back then,there was not a current known countries there was a berber tribes who mainly was the root of every empire which had rose (sanhadja, zenata masmouda....) the almoravides were sanhadja tribes which spread through all the maghreb, the almohades had a masmoudian tribes army,but the holgarchy originated from zenata tribes (in the east of morroco and the west of algeria).... thank you

Ethnic units?

Holy War is a combination of 4 things I believe. 1. Its the primal violent human psyche, actually not just human, primate psyche because chimpanzees exhibit this behavior too, that motivates. It blinds the mind into yearning for a fight or flight response and vicious hatred to the point of death for the other. The reason this exists must be some evolutionary advantage maybe to do with hunting other animals like deer and running from others like saber-tooth cats. That leads to the second reason. 2. A classic us vs. them. What better reason than religion to justify if you are with us or against us. And against us because of belief, well that's punishable by death. Again it ties to prehistory when for millennia, actually 100,000s years worth of prehistoric man, small communities of hunter gathers needed to band together for survival and all encounters with other groups must be considered hostile initially, you never know? "That's them that lives on the other side of the hill, they believe in different spirits than us and oh yeah they look different, talk different, and stole some stuff and woman from us a couple generation ago too". It might even stem from the human vs. neanderthal or the other human like types that coexisted with modern humans. That Us vs. Them mentality will always be in the human brain forever and it is still causing problems. 3. Almost nothing motivates the mind more for a group of people exhibiting peer pressure on each other than religion. Really not religion but belief. It usually is benign maybe leading to some xenophobia but it can quickly spiral out of control involving both my 1 & 2 reasons into, "oh we need to kill someone if they aren't going to drink the Kool Aide we been all sipping on". This motivating factor of belief and thinking God or Allah or Zeus or Thor is on your side from the paranormal is almost like a hallucinogen. It is a unique human quality. And many millions have marched into their violent or otherwise death because of it. But also used that as justification for their actions. 4. Humans are crazy, and I say this in the broadest sense not as a mental health dis. An imperfect "perfect design in Gods image" that has many faults, each and everyone of us forever in history and into the future.

Excellent video, however the Almoravids didn’t originate from Morocco. The movement started in Mauritania and Senegal with the gudala and lamtuna tribes. They did however establish their Capital in Morocco. That’s all I wanted to say great video otherwise though.

@Antoine Shelby yes the one of the founders was a moroccan. However the ruling class and warriors come from the gudala and lam-tuna tribes in West Africa. (EDIT: I meant to say the first large scale conversion)The first converts were at the kingdom of Takrur in Senegal. These were the tribes conquered Morocco and established their capital at Marrakech. They also conquered half of Spain, as well as the Niger.

@Antoine Shelby yes the moroccans were muslim however they came from rival tribes at the time EDIT: the almorsvid tribes were at war with the moroccan tribes. An im not talking about converts to islam im talking about the first people Abdullah ibn yassine converted to his version of islam

Moreover what I said still stands the almoravids were comprised of a Lamtuna and Gudala ruling, and warrior class. The Gudala came from Senegal and the Lamtuna were from Mauritania.

@Antoine Shelby i never said it wasn’t a moroccan dynasty I said the dynasty didn’t begin in morocco the same way America is in the but the people aren’t native to the land. In hind sight I should have specified that. EDIT: Abdullah ibn yasin was a theologian and spiritual leader of the almoravid MOVEMENT. Abdullah was approached by yahya ibrahm yasin who was a member of the GODALA tribe. Yahya asked him to preach islam to his people in MAURITANIA and thats how the almoravids got started.

most moroccans do not descend from these noble highly influential dynasties so i don't know why they feel related... the overwhelming majority of moroccans are of mixed arab-berber descent hence their lack of culture, a culture drawn and drained from the native autochtonous people. most of these ''mixed'' moroccans have no value no principles no honor for instance ''doukkalis'' ''chaouis'' ''3abdis'' '' rhamnis'' ''gherbaouis'' they all got bad and vile reputation. i personally hope that morocco will become free of these dirty prototypes.

Well,the almohads were in no way more 'orthodox' nor 'fundamental' in regards to Islamic teachings than their moravid enemies,in fact they were more deviants than orthodox,the almoravids were Maliki sunni's though. I am not sure where did you grow up . But I am Coptic Egyptians and what you are mentioning is definitely not true about Islamic conquers . He was the follower of ibn tumart and will become the first caliph of almohads he is from nedroma a city in algeria near tlemcen also he will defeat the almoravids in oran and the almoravids leader will die with his wife when he flee for go to a port. Litterally all conquests of almohads will be do by abd al mumin!

@@fknight1446 Actually if you want to visit all Almohades temples and monuments you have to travel to Morocco, same for Almoravides, Marinides, etc. This actually happen because they are true moroccan dynasties 😀 one thing to add is you algerians you're not welcome to Morocco coz simply we look at you as a barbaric people. Me as a moroccan and based on my visit to algeria i saw that you as algerians are so influenced by moroccan culture but you have some real problems admitting that 🙂 Try to visit morocco, especially the imperial cities that were capitals for Almohades, Almoravides, Marinides empire, you'll release that you are living in a real propaganda. Btw : Morocco was never invaded by the ottomans and we were never a France colony, we had the status of a protectorat, also rabat was the capital of morocco back to the rule of Saadid empire, those who defeated Portuguese and ottomans and kept the sherifian empire (morocco) independent until 1912. Btw : We as moroccans aren't similar to tunisian and algerian and we have nothing in common.

Flash Point History needs to get more educated about the Crusades, the world the Crusades, the situation prior to and after the Crusades and in particular study the written personal witnesses left behind by some who actually became Crusaders. Some of the conclusions drawn in this video are not wholesome.

I find disgusting the way you refer to Christianity and particularly the idea that motivated the Crusades or Holy war. You ignored that Christianity was fighting against an enemy with the idea of Jihad or Holy war. You ignore that the mentioned Jihad led Islam to conquer former Christian lands in the Middle East and North Africa not to mention Spain in the 7th and 8th century 400 years before the first Crusade. The idea of Jihad came into being from the very inception of Islam in the 7th century. I just quote Sudra 9:5 from the Quoran also called the verse of the sword "hunt the infidel wherever you find them. If they do not submit behead them" Hence, Crusaders borrow the idea of Holy war from their enemies. How can you judge people from the 11th century under your secular point of view? I find particularly disgusting how much you dislike Christianity.

Yes, well said. Lack of information about what Islam did after they conquered the Middle East.We all humanity did mistakes but I always seeing it in documentaries how historians are so soft on Islamic wars and motives . Not sure if they r scared to be harassed or ignorant

What a narrow perspective of medieval history this guy shows. Had not been for the Crusaders we all would be having camel stew for supper tonight. Also his pronunciation of Latin sucks.
