I started my first year in residential & commercial service. Switch to commercial construction, and like it a lot better. Yall resi service guys can keep those crawlspaces and dealing with sewage. I'll stick with rough-in and top-out new buildings and renovations.

Kenny i have done both, but on the service and repair side of plumbing, i loved the commercial side of it , lots of over time, no dealings with people, just check in and do the work

Thanks for the insight Denver. My experience is it depends on the sector of residential. High rise residential uses a lot of cast iron as well.

Service on residential and commercial

I've done commercial, lowrise housing, high rise residential (renos/condos), and residential service work. There is this attitude that I've noticed at a couple of different commercial companies that "new housing residential plumbers aren't real plumbers" which I dont agree with. There is more skill involved walking into a new framed house and deciding where to run all the 3" ABS, 2" and 1-1/2" inside the joists in walls (especially on the main floor) and you don't always get a bulkhead space or "box" to run pipes in. That being said, I believe it's easier to go from housing to commercial than from commercial to housing. Housing, you have to be quick (which I hate and is why I'm looking for commercial now) and in commercial, it was a lot more laid back and it was a less stressful culture. In housing, the plumbers try to be the fastest and that is valued as much as knowing how to rough-in an entire house by yourself. Commercial is the best overall in my opinion. Floor drains are primed legally and not with 1/4" plastic tubing like in housing upstairs laundry rooms where the inspectors let code for that sort of thing go to the wayside. Being able to solder 3" DWV copper, install 3" and bigger cast iron pipe, drill 3/8" or 1/2" holes into concrete to bang in shots for threaded rod and install Clevis or swivel hangers, victaulic couplings and threading pipes with different dies just feels more like professional plumbing than doing a house. My advice to any apprentice is to start wherever you get a job and make sure you learn the code and get through school. If you never touch housing construction, it isn't necessarily a big loss but don't expect as a licensed plumber to make the switch to it from commercial and survive. The speed and experience that they demand simply won't be there.

You mentioned bandsaw for cutting threaded rod , forget that !!! There’s a shear tool for threaded rod with different dies. Absolutely awesome ! No need to clean the finished cut , nut goes on easy.

Fair enough but if you're going to be doing hundreds, which I have in the electrical trade installing cable tray this tool is efficient. @@kotaplumbingandheating

How hard is it to transfer to different sectors once you're licensed? Like if you spend your apprenticeship doing mostly service in residential or commercial settings but want to switch to new installs, and vice versa

Currently in my apprenticeship I mainly do residential service and alot of steam boilers, i honestly really enjoy working on steam units.Btw love the content kenny

you can charge alot more for commercial work typically. I live in a smaller town in northern ontario and work for a company that does both. Materials can be marked up a lot more for commercial and they rarely hesitate to pay the bill. It is hard to justify certain pricing in our middle class neighbourhoods for residential. Just the way it is :/

I prefer to work on the residential side. I can manage my schedule however I want. And some customers give me things to eat. Lol
