Basic Nation Analysis - EA R'lyeh

Ойындар

Thanks to Daniel for commissioning this video!
EA R'lyeh is a tricky nation to handle. Despite powerful astral magic, good crosspaths, and a wide variety of extremely cheap, fairly robust chaff, R'lyeh suffers from one basic, massive problem; it's an aquatic nation that struggles mightily to ever leave the sea! In a game where most of the thrones will almost always be on land, that's a very serious handicap - but there are some ways to work around the obstacle!

Thanks for agreeing to put this one out. It was good to get a fresh view to contrast against my own experiences. I went the immobile route and relied on Voice of Tiamat as you suggested as one of the options. Taking high astral on the pretender seemed redundant but the void lurker gets it very cheaply and that lets you both wire in a pen bless and get more trolls per cast on enslave sea trolls. Fortunately Ulm was convinced to sell me amulets of the fish. I agree that this was a terrible idea on their part in the long run but it bought them an ally early. One thing I will say in defence of mind-vessel androdai, and against big ass mind lords themselves, is that androdai: A) Have full slots B) Carry your bless C) Don't waste one of their misc slots on the amulet A 4 astral Androdai can carry eye of the void and a spell focus (sub out for crystal coin if required) for +3 pen. Unlike the mind-lords they can hold a rune smasher if you can convince someone to do the forging for you (I was only able to get 1 so far) bringing them to +5 pen, and they carry the bless for another +1 as well as, in my case, some bonus reinvig. That's +6 pen. If you're getting ludicrous, you can throw on a cap or something as well. At the moment, all that allows you to do is reliably enslave mind 1 unit per turn at the head of a communion, but eventually I think it will be that Androdai, not one of the mind-lords, that is the trigger puller on master enslave. All that said, I still resent Androdai mainly in that I wish I could recruit slave mages above water. Every coastal fort I put up doesn't actually add to my mage pool in anywhere close to the way i'd like, so to keep up in terms of troop and mage production, I need to put up more underwater forts than the land nations are building just on land AND put up coastal forts to give my armies some mind-blasting punch. I trashed temp scales to cold rather than hot, mostly because i'm leaning on water elementals a lot and ice elementals just do better on land than water does. Also worth considering an arcane leadership bless point on these guys I think, it means your first prophet slave prince can lead lobos and thralls and that your cheap 45 gold priests can lead mindless trampling expansion parties.

Hey man I'm brand new to the game and wanted to say your comment was really helpful in me winning my first 4 man normal game vs the AI (as R'lyeh). I had an Androdai mindslaved to my 8 Astral skill Pretender at the head of a 10 mage communion (with another Master Androidai mindslaved by a Mind Lord) and the enemy army just kept disintegrating with my mass enslave spells in the late game. I forgot to add the +pen items though so I will try that next time

With tips of what will work best in terms of troops, magic schools etc. Which nations in your opinion have an overwhelming advantage over in this case R'lyeh and which ones ought to be careful. Otherwise great video as always General!

Soon gonna play my first MP game as EA Rlyeh. Gonna know more after, but two thoughts so far I didn't see noticed here that I find might be relevant: - Tritons lack darkvision. This plus their aquatic nature makes them utterly useless, as loads of underwater provinces are dark. - Androdai are holy communicants. While niche, it can be useful to combat undead and, maybe more importantly, can drop Fanaticism to alleviate your bad morale. Edit: Oh and also, when designing a pretender, it seems a good idea to keep boosting in mind. While Rlyehs national access is technically quite good, their lack of slots means they can do less to improve their paths. In particular, without E2 they can't make Crystal Coins, so taking that on a pretender (for boots to give to an androdai) seems justified. Similarly can be said for death; while you have national D2, the lack of hands means they can't do the usual skull staff > mound fiend variant. With E2 you can get crystal coin+skullcap to an S4 Mind Vessel to make a ring of sorcery which helps boost death, but that's a much slower process. I think A1W1E2 is a really good baseline, and that D2 (with hands) is probably justified too.

Also two additional small corrections: - Giboleths and gibodai have slightly stronger mind blast than androleths; though it isnt visible in the in-game tooltip, full-blown abolethians have dmg 12 paralysis while the hybrids (as well as olms and and armored illithids) have a dmg 10 paralysis. - Enslaved troll warriors are notably weaker than sea kings' guards. Notably, their low attack + glaive means they won't hit much, but they are still durable lineholders.

21:34 The temperature scales does affect water provinces, but is limited to 1 level either way. So it still affect negatively your income by -5% max for underwater provinces. As you had -12% income but it's in reality -2%. So no it's not slightly positive, it's still a tad negative.

The advantage of Tritons over the other slave infantry types is higher hit points (15 vs 12 and 10) and one additional point of attack and defense each. They are actually marginally slower than the Merman type (CS 19 MM 15 vs CS 21 MM 17).

I'm of the opposite opinion on troops. Lobos are cheap but require magical leadership and you need amulet to get that onto land. I prefer the slave guardians (atlantian and triton) with hard hitting weapons. They have average protection and doesn't die to one hit, and have 18 and 20 dmg attacks that can actually hurt enemy troops, while lobo and shambler at atk 9 have trouble hitting and both don't hit as hard. There are 2 limitations on going those troops, first is resource, second is morale. With resource it favours production scale, which you'll enjoy the income anyways, and morale requires slave prince or mind lord leadership, but you're using them anyways. Point is, these troops cost less than double (9 gold vs 5 gold for lobo) but can actually kill stuff while the lobo just die every battle. I can expect a decent amount of slave guardians to survive a battle and contribute. I'm currently in a MP game with a scales build and am the largest in all categories (mod left score graph on, apparently by accident) so there's 1 data point that seems to work.

This is pretty niche, but the Wind Walker bless is actually active underwater, meaning your Abodai can move two underwater tiles instead of just one. That doesn't help much because your units will still be limited to one tile per turn, but it's worth noting.

Oddly for a nation you exclaim is weak, they seem to win quite often. Though usually this is more in games where they have a uncontested waters for almost the entire game. BUT to admit the throne gameplay has weakened them, since no longer are you required to actually deal with them to win.
