    I can tell you those two Oxen are pampered more than most dogs and cats in this world. They are the pride and joy of that old Farmer. I bet they get the very best hay and grain to eat.

    Well, this is completely new to me. I'm totally perplexed how they pull with their heads and with how sweet and placid they are. They must be pampered and babied like crazy. They just follow their person out like little puppies lol!

    This is NOT cruel, this doesn't hurt them, cattle are tough and strong animals, oxen are very well cared for, as for the harness or yokes used, these are more comfortable than people think. Cattle are trained for this may actually like being in a yoke and pulling loads. People, think before you post.

    I love the kid and his oxen at 10:50 these animals are so powerful. The one is chewing his cud like is another day at the office. I also love how responsive they are to him considering the size difference (which is a big thing for cows) but you can still see they don't quiet listen to him well when they set up and when he wants them to stop.

    Horses will never out pull oxen. It’s just a fact. Back in the 1800’s oxen were used to break up the sod because horses weren’t strong enough. These in the video are tiny compared to ones used in 1800’s. I’ve seen pictures of farmers standing by them and they’re huge.

    They used to do draft horse pulls at the local fair. But the families have all got out of it for alot of reasons. I sure miss it. But back in the day they also had ox pulling. I wish I could get into draft horses but my job hardly leaves me time for myself let alone to tend and care for such massive demanding creatures.

    With horses they do strait pulls for a certain distance .why do they keep stopping for such short distance with the oxen

  • @UpTheHarbour

    @UpTheHarbour

    6 жыл бұрын

    they have so much allowed distance too pull whatever weight they can. also to register each little pull, it has too be pulled a certain distance or it doesn't count, the judges stick he drops down . the owners use their own judgement on how much too increase each haul. ideally you would warm your oxen up with easier hauls, just barely hauling it the required distance. that's why you'll see the owners get them too haul hard then get them too stop fast once he thinks its registers the distance. then increase the weight to what you think they will haul, before running out of distance

    Uptheharbor great explanation. I think it adds more of skill on the teamsters part to know how much to pull and to get them stopped without eating up much distance. Instead of just throwing on weight and straight pulling it's more strategy to it. Thanks for the upload Sir.

  • @UpTheHarbour

    @UpTheHarbour

    2 жыл бұрын

    you get a set amount of distance that your allowed to pull in total. you can pull how ever much you think your ox can pull, but the owners have to work the ox up each pull, its not good to just go for a huge amount. but to be a "legal" pull it also needs to be a certain length of pull, thats why the judge has the measuring stick. so the owner only wants them to pull just past the stick length, to get more pulls in , if he can.

    thank you for posting this, it was interesting, but I hope the youngster with the 24 on his shirt watched this video and saw what he was doing with the whip, and subsequently corrected his handling technique. he might have been well-intentioned but too nervous to really realize what he was doing with the whip, which is understandable, or it may have been something else, but he was not using the whip sparingly or not at all like the other handlers. Instead he was slapping it around almost incessantly, hitting the one animal's face much more often than not, causing it to flinch, blink, and try to duck his head away to protect himself. It's a wonder the animal could concentrate on his work of the pull at all, as he was so busy the whole time trying to protect his face. Maybe because the youth was younger and lighter than the other handlers, the whip was needed a little in training (?), but even so its use here is clearly excessive (though maybe unintentional). and it is sad to see the one animal just trying to stand calmly between pulls, but being switched with the whip almost constantly about the face. It would have been REALLY nice to see an experienced hand (event organizer, trainer, or another handler) step in to give the youngster a heads up to what he was doing or some guidance on the matter, for his own growth as a handler if he is to continue with this event, and for the good of his team and of the event. I hope the boy has realized that the other handlers before and after him got good results too from these powerful animals without whipping at them constantly, and the other teams were treated with gentle authority and respect which reflected well on the men handling them. Also, the other teams were rewarded between pulls with strokes or pats, which were well deserved for their tremendous efforts. I noticed someone walking by and patting the swatted ox at the end of the pull, which was nice to see -- I guess they thought he deserved a pat too, for effort and for putting up with all the whipping. Hopefully he also said something constructive to the boy. Number 24: I just realized this was posted last year, and you have probably grown up quite a bit more since this video was posted, and even here it seemed you had good potential to be a great handler if you wanted to be one, and take some guidance from the others. It seems you have a calm and powerful team that wants to work for you -- give them some pats too now and then along with their training, lose the whip as much as possible, and they will keep pulling with all their impressive might for you. but you may have already done all of that! anyway, if you read this, good luck!

    Its actually more of a tap to remind the steers to stop pulling and stay in line with each other otherwise they could seriously injure themselves or each other. The tap it just a reminder I drove cattle in high school they are very responsive and anyone in these competitions who does actually hit their animals is immediately disqualified. This man has great control over these animals to simply way the driver under their nose with out touching is the mark of a true master and many years of practice on these steers. Younger steers are reminded more often with the tapping and younger trainers tend to be heavier handed...

    Omw!!!! I hate people like u!!!!!! I'm and animal lover and hate when people abuse animals but this is not abuse!!!!!! These oxen r just fine!!!! If he had been whipping their backs and forcing them to go, that may be a little abuse. But these oxen moved in their own cuz obviously they love and respect and trust their owner

    UM..sorry to correct you, but the whips are used during training, and not in public. It is not about trusting the owner, it is about fear if they do not perform. This ridiculous "sport"has been outlawed in many countries now, and for obvious reasons. The animals are abused during training, and there have been many Court cases in relation to it. Same where horses are concerned. It is downright cruel. Do the research, it's not rocket science.
