Plowing the Garden With Draft Horses and a Walking Plow/Weighing Stub
It's time to plow the garden again with the team. Leonard weighs Stub before harnessing the team. Leonard uses a walking plow because the garden is very small. The soil was a bit sticky so, Justin, was in charge of cleaning off the plow. After the garden was finished, Stub and Stoney were let out and enjoyed a nice roll. Back at home, the boys greased the grain drill, and we filled some raised garden beds.

This is super cool. The wife and I are buying a sustinance farm right now, and I want to learn to plow with horses. Our Amish neighbors do, so I'm hoping to make friends and have them teach me if they'd be so kind.
In "1964" when I was nine or so, I took some kite string and tied it to the forelock of my great uncle's plow horse that weighed in at right around two thousand pounds like the beautiful horse in this video and he'd allow me to lead him all around the field. When he stopped in his tracks and raised his left front leg, that was my signal to climb up and get a great view of the farm from his broad back. He'd graze and flick his ears back and forth and we'd spend the afternoon together. Sometimes I'd bring a library book and sit up there and read. My cousins were so jealous. :D I was the only kid out of the whole crowd of cousins that he'd allow to "ride" him. :D It wasn't like he'd go where I directed him. I was just along for the ride. :) Excellent team. Works well together.

What a sweet memory.
As long as there are farmers who care about both their history and the art of ploughing , people like me thousands of miles away will be forever grateful.
My dad farmed 100 acre farm with just 4 horses until I was 14 in 1959. (then he bought an 8N Ford) He plowed with an IH 1-16 plow using 3 horses.( it had a seat and steel wheels ) As a kid I loved to walk behind in the furrow. When plowing with horses you can hear the soil turning over Good memories !
The children are growing up fast I really enjoy your videos

The soil here doesn't scour well especially when it's moisture. Where I grew up we never had trouble scouring and seldom used more than 2 horses to plow. Here we used 3, 4 and sometimes 5 horses plow.

Very old school. We're thankful that we don't have to do all our plowing like that!
Yours is not to wonder how Yours is but to pull and plough. I have never in my life seen such disciplined horses (and I owned drafts years ago). No shouting, those animals knew exactly what a) was expected of them, and b) how to get the job done. Much respect from NZ.
Enjoyed the video. I'm in the hospital here in S.C. wit quadruple by pass surgery and can't plow for a while so just enjoying see somebody else. Enjoy watching them farm kids keep up the good work. God Bless
your kids are lucky to see this kind of plowing in person. What an awesome team of horses. Grandpa looked like he was enjoying himself too.. Your kids sure love being part of the farm. They have some of the best teachers raising them!!!
I have a great deal of respect for everyone in the video, the horses included. Children were helping where they could and doing as they were told. Horses have better manners and behavior than many of the children around today. Thank you for a GREAT video. There are some bright spots in our world!
Loved seeing them young boys greasing that grain drill. I liked how that old school plowing with the horses. We need more of this kind of things now days.
This video really brought back some good memories to Me ! Grandparents lived in town and Mom Hosey's garden was 4 city lots in size ! and She would only let Mr Copas plow it with his Horses !! Your Grandson reminds me of being the the superintendent when Mr Copas was plowing ! I'm now 78 and smiling about those days of helping Her with the Garden, Thank you !!
Great video, love seeing the kids and horses.......
I followed my grandpa many times, plowing gardens for people. Always fishing worms. Another great memory, living in these Great United States. Enjoy you videos.
There are so many things I love about this video! Spring weather (while the snow is thick on the ground), beautiful fertile soil, great toiling horses, wonderful little kids being kids and learning skills from the adults, and family. It doesn’t get any better than this!
Loved it a good team with a good teamster

Thank you for this video. My dad and grandfather farmed with horses and a Fordson tractor. As my dad would say : " Before the war"
Awesome video, love seeing the draft horses working. You got great help greasing that drill Allan. Take care guys and stay safe 👍
Great video. Can one imagine doing hundreds of acres in rocky soil this way? Out forefathers really were hard men.

Nice plowing, good soil and a good am of good-looking well-behaved horses, what a pleasure!
Very nice video! Hard to believe that the Amish community still plows their fields with horses! I'm from PA and in Lancaster county there are still a lot of Amish farmers!
Wonderful video! This gives me a clear view of what my grandparents talked about when I was a child as to how they farmed with horses when they were young.
My first draft horse experience was sitting on one of my granddad's pair at age 3. I am 64 and I still recall it vividly. Thanks for sharing.
Great job. Lots of Hard work. Beautiful horses. God-bless all the mothers out their. Please keep safe. 🙏praying for all Farmers.
Just another great video. Kids having fun. God bless Trinity Dairy 🙏🏽
Brings back memories, my grandpa had two work horses named King and Queen. We had tractors but they would be used to “tickle scratch” the top of the soil so it would dry out and tractors could work the ground up for planting. My grandpa let me take the horses to the barn when I was small, the horses walked so fast it felt like my feet weren’t touching the ground.
Brings back great n happy memories ....hard work but happier times !
I love to watch a well-trained team.
Enjoyed seeing your horses working. My dad used horses for farm work, I have only used tractors. Came to Minnesota in 2019 to see the world championships of ploughing. I farm in Australia. .
Thanks! I enjoy seeing the horses out working
Really liked how u involve the boys-when done well-they’ll near always be happy to help Enjoyed watching
The soil you all turned over looks great - rich & fertile. The horses are well trained and make an easy task of it. Plus they provide great fertilizer for the garden! The putty knife boy will be driving this team before you know it. And GOD has blessed you all already... Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!
There was a family that cut hay and stacked it by horses. they did that clear into 2008. They retired and the horses retired. I used to love seeing those horses work.
Up until the mid 40's, my Mom helped plow with a team, my Grandfather gave her the Oliver walking plow she used, we had it until we sold out from farming in 2005. The tailing edge of the moldboard and hitch were wore heavily from flipping it at the headlands, dragging it to the next furrow. Great video Jen!
Thank you for taking good care of these beautiful animals.
That’s a sight I’d never get tired of....beautiful horses effortlessly pulling a plow. Thanks for the video. ❤️
Horses are the most amazing animals. They have done so much for mankind throughout time. Horses have carried man and their loads, pulled wagons and plows. They have gone through wars and helped settle America. Horses need to be given special treatment and not mistreated or killed for any human needs period.

It's great to watch a team of Belgians work. My Grandfather had a pair of Belgians named Tom and Jerry. I only have seen a few pictures of them in the field. My elderly Mom so enjoyed this video! Great Horses, Good Job.
I am from the South and in my youth I saw plenty of mules pulling a plow but not many draft horses. These big boys are a pleasure to watch and the relationship between plowman and team is wonderful. They respond to a click of the tongue or a soft command. I can’t imagine, back in the day, following those two all day. Thanks for the video.

What a Beautyful Great Thing ! It,s remind me my grandparents life… God bless !
Great to see people still using draft horses. Remindes me of my Grandpa back in Glen Rock, Pa. God bless.
Fun to watch, this is the way my Grandpa did it when my mother was a little girl before they bought the oil pull rumely tractor. My grandpa had relatives that also farmed down the street from him and this relative came and took my grandpa's horses to do work w/o asking. One of the horses wasnt responding to my grandpa's relative the was they wanted her to so the relative took a dirty pitchfork to her hip. Its very lucky the horse didnt die from Blood Poisoning
Amazing, we do the same here where I live. My great grand father did it with two bulls long ago. We still use horses mainly when we have the lines of crops or veggies and we go by the side to get rid of the bad weeds. We take care a lot of our horses, we love them, they do most of the job, you have to guide them. Also, nice spot to grow some organic veggies for your family, greetings from Rapa Nui.

awsome video
My old man started ploughing with horses as a lad in the UK. He was also the sprayer guy on his last job ending his career in one of those space pod self contained sprayer things. His work buddy and next door neighbour once used a rotavator to cultivate their conjoined gardens and took down a stone wall to get a tractor in to do the work. Then them and their boss were told to put the wall back up EXACTLY how it was before because the wall was a listed structure. The wall wasn’t 1000years old but the farm was in the Doomsday Book- I even found it in a copy at college when I moved to the US. A certain acreage had to have a certain number of ploughs and ploughmen. And then the Normans (or Breton allies) could tax the farm.

where i live the rule of thumb was: a one horse farm should be about 8 hectares, no more... horses need rest to (amount of land also depends on how'heavy'the soiltype is
This makes me miss our Belgians... pulling plows and wagons, and logging was fun!
Really great video, Ive seen many a demonstration with draft horses but usually short one or two minutes and a ride on plow. This showed us how much work was actually put into breaking ground the old school way... it's no wonder the average life span of that era was somewhat shorter than today. Thanks for sharing.
That soil is wonderful. Thank you for sharing.
