Google maps, look for clearings in woods ,in thick spots, up old roads, if there's an open spot, most likely some activity. Transfer coordinates to GPS. You'll get some that are duds, I don't show all of those lol

Why do they only pull for a short distance at a time and then start all over again this somebody explain to me the competition works

you get a set amount of distance that your allowed to pull in total. you can pull how ever much you think your ox can pull, but the owners have to work the ox up each pull, its not good to just go for a huge amount. but to be a "legal" pull it also needs to be a certain length of pull, thats why the judge has the measuring stick. so the owner only wants them to pull just past the stick length, to get more pulls in , if he can.
