@@matthewzito6130 It lived almost all throughout north Africa reaching Libya but it was officially last seen in Morocco in like 1870. Though there were rumoured sightings in Algeria some years back but they were never verified.

For me the most impressive animal on earth, even if the Siberian tiger is partly bigger. It's not the size alone, it's the overall appearance that makes the lion so impressive.

Indeed, yes!

The interesting thing is that Barbary lions were not the only lions to look like that, there was various lion populations throughout Africa that looked similar. They were generally found in the colder mountainous regions, with the exception of the Cape region of South Africa, due to it's Southern location it already had a cool climate. Anyway, these unique looking lions were mostly found in the most prominent mountain ranges in Africa, from Mount Kenya, the Aberdare range to the Ethiopian Highlands in East Africa and then the mountain ranges throughout Southern Africa. Lions once lived in the coldest and snowiest country in Africa, the small mountainous country called Lesotho. This southern African country has frosty, sub zero winters even in the lower altitudes, at higher altitudes snowy conditions occur frequently in winter and natives have lived there for centuries despite the harsh conditions. So lions would've experienced very cold and snowy conditions in this region, they would've preyed mostly on the huge mountain dwelling elands, can you imagine lions chasing such huge prey in a snowfield? That would be an awesome sight. Leopards also roamed Lesotho, so they would've looked similar to the Amur leopards in appearance and likely larger in body size too. Lions were confirmed extinct in Lesotho by the late 19th century, the last verified Lesotho lion was killed by a missionary. Most of the unique African lion populations I mentioned have been killed off, with the exception of the very elusive Ethiopian lions. Lions still grow similar sized manes in the wild, although not as impressive as those unique African lion populations, they're still impressive nevertheless. You'll still see a good amount of lions with long impressive manes in Ngorongoro Crater and occasionally in the Serengeti plains, both regions are quite high in altitudes especially in the Ngorongoro Crater. Southern Africa has the occasional impressive manes too, especially in the plateaus or the southernmost regions. Thank you for your patience whoever got this far, because I know this was quite a read, I can't help myself sometimes.

do u have an article talking about the similarity, i don't think that because when we talk about atlas mountain in morocco we talk about big atlas; smal atlas anti-Atlas and Rif mountains in the north this means that moroccan Lions are protected from the genetic mix with the other Lions Breed This explains why the Berber Lions live alone because there are not enough competitors. Another example is the Berber dogs who also live in Attlas mOUNTAIN which is an ancient breed of dogs very close to the wolf and very aggressive.

@@ifriyour1641 I said similar in appearance, like their big manes and hairy appearance, I didn't say similar in genetics. The only lions that are genetically similar to Atlas lions are West African lions, North Central African lions and Asiatic lions. The lions I mentioned are not genetically close to Atlas lions, they are East African and Southern African lions, the ones that looked similar to Atlas lions lived in colder mountainous areas like I said before, so they grew bigger manes in the process.

The last recorded shooting of a Barbary lion was in 1942 in Morocco. The last populations are believed to have survived into the 60s with the last known sighting being in 1956 in Algeria.

Barbary lions are the most impressive amazingly beautiful animal 🦁♌

There are videos showing some of the lions in Morocco, or their descendants in other countries, that are claimed to be Barbary lions. Their appearance is different than the sub-Saharan lion, including head shape. Aren't there still captive lions in Morocco that have been bred from lions in the kingdom's possession for well over a century? It is such a shame that humans have devastated so many animals throughout history.

@ACEKING You could very well be right. The interesting thing is that their heads are shaped differently than sub Saharan African lions. If they are mixed, they appear to be made up mostly of Barbary Lion genes. At what percentage do we say "hybrid" or that they are so much Barbary that they can be categorized as Barbary Lions? I don't know for sure but that's what some of the videos I've seen in the past do suggest. Some of them are amazing specimens.

It's possible that the head shape has been influenced by a century of inbreeding. Let's say the original breeding stock consisted of 8 individuals with a 50/50 gender distribution. In that scenario, you could at most go 4 generations without any inbreeding. Even if its multiple females per male, you're still limited - Male As offspring can breed with male Bs offspring, the resulting cubs could breed with a descendent of male C, but if there's only 3 males to start with then the next generation has to be inbred.

What a shame that they appear to have been completely wiped out. At least we have some form of lions left in the world. We need to remember the Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacine) as a cautionary tale.

@ACEKING New research shows that lions in Africa probably constitute a single population that interbred during several waves of migration since the Late Pleistocene!! So the fact that the morocco lions share DNA with other lions from different places doesn´t mean that they are not a pure breed of barbary lions because even the original barbary lions were not pure and problably shared DNA with other lions as well!!! 5 DNA samples from the morocco lions at rabat zoo were tested and were not maternaly barbary!!! However a distinct hyplotype found in barbary lions specimen kept in museums was found in another lion from the same collection!!!! That hyplotype is believed to be a good marker to identify living true barbary lions!

However a distinct hyplotype found in barbary lions specimen kept in museums was found in another lion from the same collection!!!! That hyplotype is believed to be a good marker to identify living true barbary lions! A lion from the morocco collection was tested in germany and had that hyplotype!!! another lion called tanner at the tiger world sanctuary was also tested and is a barbary lion too!!! they are far from gone!!

It's seems to me Barbary lions in zoos have, (out of a disctinctive larger mane, runing over the belly to back legs), special eyes "angle" on the top, when other sub species have completly "ovale shape" eyes.....

King of Morocco claimed to have some of them kept in captivity because it’s their birth place after splitting into other Northern Africa countries. Last Barbary lion was killed in Morocco, we hope that there is some species left in cages.

I AGREE. Lions are here to be appreciated. They are true kings of the kingdom. Dumb ignorant humans must be taught to APPRECIATE them.

My moroccan grandma (who’s born in 1945) told me a lion walked into her city and attacked people a few years before she was born. Id like to believe this was their last stand. Really sad but I understand why farmers felt threatened by those lions and hunted them.

It's sad how many species have gone extinct because of humans. Thousands of species have been completely wiped out or are very near extinction thanks to us.

You know that way lions sit, the Trafalger Lion statue pose, half down with their front legs straight out flat on the ground? I think they do that to listen to vibrations of potential prey with their legs and can locate and position them using this. I seen a wildlife documentary and they were filming at night in infra red and they pointed out an antelope with a white hot patch on it’s rear which they said was a muscle injury and then they were amazed when lions singled it out and jumped it and they were saying how did they know it was injured? They must have heard it limping but I think they picked up the limp vibrations with their front legs flat on the ground.

That's interesting, I know leopards tend to target weak individuals, but it's more a case of direct observation where they pursue the weakest of the bunch after much stalking.

The Barbary lion being long extinct, obviously implies that extinct species do *count* ; this being the case, the largest lion ever would be *panthera leo atrox* , aka the "American lion" which only died out at the end of the last ice age, ten to eight thousand years ago, and is said to have been one and a half times as big as the biggest modern lions.

I have been studying African,Berbery and other lions and tigers for 14years.I will explain who is the Barbary lion..Barbary lions were,not largest,but on average,the heaviest and lengthest of all big cats on the world.In height at the withers,the Barbary lions they weren't highest(3-3,5 feet)...The highest of big cats are Ligers(4-4,5 feet) and Cape lions(extinct) and South African lions(3,5-4,26 feet).🦁👑🐯💞💕💖💫🌠🌌

5 DNA samples from the morocco lions at rabat zoo were tested and were not maternaly barbary!!! However a distinct hyplotype found in barbary lions specimen kept in museums was found in another lion from the same collection!!!! That hyplotype is believed to be a good marker to identify living true barbary lions!

That is good to know. I hope the real Barbary lion is re-election introduced. I hope they bring back this majestic creature. Damn Caesars of Rome did not appreciate these beautiful lions. Idiots they were, talking about Julius here, that asshole. The very idea of using animals for sport entertainment. W.T.F. was that idiot thinking. Mankind cannot afford to lose one more animal to extinction. The Barber Lion is/was magnificent. Humans have been bullying animals since the dawn of time.Animals deserve better because animals lives matter.

This story reads exactly like the Cape lion. The Dutch wrecked havoc.

sahara!!!!! insahara there was no Lions living there we are talking about cold Atlas mountain Lions Morocco North algeria in these areas there are dense forests, which have temperatures of minus degrees it snows without end Of course because of climatic change everything has changed it is not snowed like 100 years ago but at the time it has the whole year snow on 2000 and 3000 meters Atlas Mountains.

People need to respect nature and restore it to the field of prosperity, as our ancestors did for centuries for this kingdom.. Because Morocco is among the oldest kingdoms in the world.. but unfortunately since the beginning of the 19th century and with the remnants of colonialism, the Barbary lion has become extinct due to the French hunters that have increased and drained the environmental wealth ... Centuries ago, things were fine and humans coexisted with these animals. Now the Barbary lion is present in the animal park in Rabat which is the capital of Morocco.. There is now this breed of lions that was once on the brink of extinction... and this is thanks to the concerted efforts of specialized scientists who are now in the process of reviving this animal again..

This explains why there's no big cats in Europe.

Thank God for preserving Asiatic lions. India is only country we’re lions and tigers coexist.

Hi,if you want to know about Barbary lions,you have to read books that have been written by the french officers during the french conquest of of Algeria.It shows that Lions were not rare in North Africa.Furthermore hunting lions became a sport!Thus a whole litterature appeared(Gerard Jules the "lions killer",Bechade ,Noir,Margueritte,Bombonnel and many others!!!)Two large skins can be seen actually in the chateau of Chantilly

What is Sade is that WE don t have any specimen of stuffed barbary lion .only a female in a museum.😭😭😭

South of London there is a pride of Barbary Lions - The Port Lympne Pride Ranger Will introduces Adras, Oudrika, Binti, Kulinda and the 3 playful cubs, Kamari, Hasani and Mila (born in June 2021). Not sure of the DNA evidence.

Captive populations are too hybridized supposedly. Not that it should matter imho. Take the Indian Subspecies, they clearly need African Lions to strengthen the gene pool. 500 individuals is functionally extinct. There are similar controversies surrounding the "genetic purity" of red wolves. Some have even argued that Red Wolves were never a distinct subspecies, but were a hybridized population of wolf, coyote, and "feral" Amerindian Dog. Of course, the current consensus is that both Wolves and Coyotes have a little of each other in their DNA

That last photo is haunting, did the male know it was the last? Perhaps it went into the mountains to slip into the mists of time on its own terms rather than die by some aristocrats gun

No The Name of the Berber Lion is in the Native Language which is The Amazigh ( on the way to extinction by the way like the Amazigh Lion ) : Izam . It's sad to read that Morocco and Algeria only speak Arabic which is the arab Occupation Language . We must never forget that these countries were occupied by the Arabs and that since then they have been trying to Arabize all of them to the detriment of our Amazigh (Berber) culture.We have to be ashamed of all this, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia are not Arab countries.

This reminds me of the wild Buffalo that roamed the The Great Plains. They literally outnumbered the cows in America at o e point until the federal government decided to kill as many as possible to hurt the Native Americans.

I confirm. It's around 35 Atlas lions.

It is sad that humans do this to all animals, and themselves. We will most likely end our own reign someday.
