Barbara Dunkelman responds to Rooster Teeth Shutdown

Ойын-сауық

RWBY Yang Xiao Long voice actress and Always Open podcast host Barbara Dunkelman responds to Rooster Teeth's shutdown by Warner Bros. Discovery on March 6th, 2024.
Footage taken from a Rooster Teeth livestream addressing the shutdown on March 7th, 2024.
Roughly 150 employees encompassing RT were effectively laid off and will be unemployed within a month or so, according to RT employees. The status of remaining and upcoming shows such as Camp Camp, RWBY, and Red vs. Blue: Restoration are unknown. Warner shutdown the company after being unable to sell the company and determining RT and its properties were "unprofitable." Warner is looking to sell these properties once RT is shutdown.
Please support any and all employees individually on their personal platforms. All proceeds made to RT directly now are not expected to go to any of the remaining employees as RT begins to shutdown.

That said, even though some great content has been made in the last couple of years (like Survive Block Island imo) there's been more mid content then good content lately. @@GOWvMatchstick The standard some of the weird fans hold her to is crazy. I think there's some deep seated issues that people need to unpack with their therapist. I can't think of a single good joke Guss has ever told. I still like him on the podcast. Even some of the new talent like Bliz is decent, but dude deals with a lot of homophobic basement trolls. I think part of the problem is a large part of the RT fanbase was built on hyper halo nerd incels unforunately. People that lack empathy. If anyone gets unusually angry about an internet video because the jokes (in their opinion) were bad, they really need help.

@@lucaschaves8308 Women had it mad rough on the internet for the longest time, and it was gutting to watch.. Anyone who swooped in and called out the sexists were instantly dismissed as "white knights" rather than just people who wanted to shut down harassment and juvenile, spiteful sexist nonsense. It's better these days, but it's nowhere near what I'd call good. These virgins and incel losers need to fucking stop being emotionally fragile reactionary monsters. A woman existing is not something that should make anyone get abusive in the comments.. A woman on a youtube channel shouldn't ruin anyone's day.. I spent the 80s and 90s trying to get girls to play games with me, then girls finally got a foothold in gaming media and then people with outdated values went on a fricken crusade trying to shut them up... Broke my little heart. There was an era on the internet when reading comment sections for videos where a woman was joking around was a recipe for depression. Made me want to press my thumbs into the eye sockets of these losers Blade Runner style. Very few things makes me more angry than malicious scumbags orchestrating an attack on someone who just tries to make people laugh and have a good time. Just thinking about it makes me clench my jaws in anger. I want nothing but negative things to happen to the gamergate assholes. Super aids and mega cancer for all.

His casual support for the people he loves, like it’s just the natural thing to do, is such an inspiration. His dealing with alcoholism has mirrored mine and looking up to him has got me through tough times. Even though I didn't follow the company as much the past 5 years RT will always hold a special place in my heart. No internet production company will ever match that content during those days across all mediums. From the original AH crew to RVB to RWBY they killed it across the board. I was a FIRST member for years, I helped fund Lazer team, and I have so much merch from them over the years. They still made it longer than they probably realistically should have, but don't come at me saying I'm part of why this happened. They made bad financial decisions, and their content became less watched due to quality. Some very important people left over the years as well, which pulled numbers away from them. There's a lot of factors. Let people just express their feelings.

I'd come from school to catch on the latest comic/video/post of the next exciting thing the company would make. Many of my favorite cinematic scenes were from RT more than any other platform. To hear it being shuttered is like seeing my favorite childhood place closed right in front of me. I'm fearful what this means for independent creators in the future. It’s still hard to believe that it’s over. I mean, the very first vol. of RWBY was my introduction to Rooster Teeth, and I’ve been a fan ever since. From the multiversal/galactinc hijinxs of Red vs Blue, the awesome fantasy/sci-fi fights and adventures of RWBY to everything else in between, they just made amazing content and always managed to put a smile on my face. However everything always comes to an end, and I know it wont be easy. I honestly don’t know what I’ll miss more; you guys, the amazing content you create, the unfinished stories you had planned for your series (especially RWBY), or maybe all of the above. I know I should feel sad, but I also feel happy that you guys just show how much this means to you and how while it may not be easy, you come to terms with this in some way and I know you guys will do great things in the future. Also Barb is definitely one of favourites; she’s honestly one of my favourite people and she just always finds a way to make me smile…and seeing her like this instead of her usual bright ball of sunshine attitude was just heartbreaking. Barbara was always one of my favorite people in the company, her having joined around the time I started following them. Smart, witty, and hella funny (we have a shared love of puns), she was one person whom I looked up to in the company. I wish I had the ability to afford going to RTX at least once, if only so I could meet her and share some of my favorite puns with her. Seeing her like this also broke me, as it did with many others here. I can only hope that she and everybody else there lands on their feet and finds success and happiness down the road. And if it is meant to be, that they end up forming a new company to carry the torch, bringing the original Rooster Teeth's creative vision back to its roots, with a renewed focus on gaming, comedy, and bringing people together as one big community.

First job loss is always the most difficult to process. But after multiple instances of losing work for various reasons in one lifespan eventually it will harden your mind & soul to accept that nothing in a "career" is absolute; it's all temporary for satisfying the personal requirements at that time. One becomes numb to personal belonging of work and the sudden epiphany dawns upon them: the skills and efforts are all that an employer seeks, not the personality behind it. Better to keep your well-being to yourself and not to any one company, ever.

The biggest mistake they made was selling the company in 2015. I've been out of touch with most of their newer content (from late 2020 to present), but it was easy to see that the cutain had already started to close. With that said, I'm going to cherish the memories growing up with RT and AH. But Im happy that its coming to a close. While it sucks for everyone that will be unemployed, over the past few years there was definitely a sense that they were unhappy with some of their projects. Im going to miss the gang and all the office shenanigans, the podcasts and lets plays. Its been hard watching the fall of RT and the brand they made, but damn they definitely made an impact on all of us fans. Farewell Rooster Teeth, you blazed your path on the internet, and you're now leaving a Blood Gulch sized hole in all of our hearts.

Im noticing a lot of animosity towards the company in the comments. I haven't been following RT for almost a decade now, so I definitely understand why people would be so bitter. But I don't think its fair to say that every single person in the company "deserved it" Because the reality is... Most of the people in the company really didn't bring any of this to themselves, all those bad decisions wasn't their call. And that's why some of us here feel sympathy for them despite all that's happened. because a lot of them were most likely just enjoying their job, doing their best to earn their paycheck each day, and having each others' backs through all the controversies and infamy. To see that they'll lose that familiar place just because a few higherups made some bad calls is heartbreaking, and I can't in good conscience say that they "deserved it" RT is done, our childhood is done, let the hate go with it. Lets all move on as adults and wish them a better life moving forward.

Who gives a shit about cartoons on youtube? That's a microscopic audience.. I loved RT from day one. I had to step away around late 2021 or early 2022. She was part of the reason why I stopped. I’m not anti masker but her and others would randomly insert that and some anti trump shit multiple times per podcast. I’m not a trump guy either I just find it annoying. I would turn to RT to escape the politics and Covid world we were in and they had to use this platform to bitch about it all the time. They can be talking about halo and then she would randomly cry about masks for 3 minutes for no reason. They caused their own downfall They would contradict themselves every week depending on what the world told them was trendy. Look at how they treated Micah and kdin then suddenly a year later they were calling gay and black people brave. Where was that prior ? Watching old videos they have flipped so hard. Alright let me be the one to bring sense to this situation. Their own employees are doing shit behind the scenes for years like ryan was doing. Maybe not to that extent that he did bc he got "exposed" but a large enough amount of shit heads worked there that the people on camera finally quit and said something about it. That was 2 years ago both ryan and mica. I can quote you the words from their mouths to the fans "if youre part of the problem we dont want you here, we dont want you as fans" they themselves started to alienate their own fans and viewers so much that there isnt enough money behind their company now. This is upper managements fault yes. But its everyones fault for not saying anything sooner. Calling out stuff like that. Life is full of inescapable truths. The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, death comes for us all, and the most ignorant among us will always come out of the woodwork to make comments that have no bearing on the facts and only serve to distance others from the truth. Your small-mindedness is not particularly shocking, it's actually quite expected. It's preposterous to presume that an increased focus on diversity, which came as the company and its fanbase grew in size, led to its downfall. How many companies have increased their focus on inclusivity and not shut down? If anything, expanding the potential consumer-base at the cost of a small minority of committed racists only helped the company grow in size, or, at least, delayed the inevitable. The fact of the matter is that something as large as this company's shutdown has a plurality of causes, with no simple answer. It would be impossible to list all of the factors that resulted in the end of Rooster Teeth, but here's a few off the top of my head. Fullscreen acquiring RT was a pivotal moment for the company, shifting the company culture away from a community-driven, independent content studio to a corporate brand that alienated the supporters who had brought it so much success in the first place. Likely, a significant part of that decay was driven by a weakening of parasocial relationships. Further, Monty Oum's death derailed the long-term plans for RWBY, a major project that Rooster Teeth had a great deal of hope for, both artistically and commercially. A primary draw of the show was, inarguably, his experience and skill in motion capture and fight choreography. The show had problems to begin with, but it began to take shape in Volume 3, coincidentally, the last season Monty had any real creative input over before his shocking passing. In a similar vein, the way the property of Red vs Blue was handled post season 10 likely also contributed to a decline as well. It's no secret that when your most profitable and "iconic" piece of media starts to receive mixed reviews, your company's trajectory likely won't be as solid as it once was. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention the changing landscape of internet content as a whole. As previously mentioned, a considerable draw to Rooster Teeth, and, as a function of it, LetsPlay, was the parasocial relationships offered by the studio, but, unfortunately for Achievement Hunter and RT, it doesn't require a full-time team, editors, and a huge cast, just a computer and someone playing some games. "Let's Play" content and livestreaming as career options took off, and RT was now competing with hundreds, if not thousands, of individual content creators and influencers, who didn't have to regurgitate the same content over and over again. I'd argue the fact that AH lost Ray to a streaming career emblemizes this point perfectly. Covid only exasperated this, as content from these sources (and others, like podcasting) grew exponentially. The landscape shifted, and RT couldn't compete. There's also the scandals that happened, ranging from Micah's outspoken criticism of company practices, to the accusations against Ryan Haywood and Adam Kovic, to Joel Heyman's idiotic and deranged behavior online and in person. Then there's the loss of key figures, like Gus and Bernie, the failure of Gen:Lock, and the layoffs. These are only a few factors, though, I'm sure there's stuff I'm forgetting or problems that I'm just not privy to that contributed to the company's downfall. The writing has been on the wall for awhile. "Diversity" wouldn't come to a rational person's mind, unless one was specifically driven by a narrative that conveniently aligns with their broader worldview. The ignorance of your comment speaks to a greater truth that, ironically, you may never grasp because of your narrow thinking: sometimes the truth is really damn complicated.

You brought not much sense, but did bring your own baggage.
