Baofeng UV-9R - Testing and Comparing to the UV-9R PLUS UV-9R+ . Which Is Best For You.

Ойын-сауық

NOTE: Terribly sorry, I guess I can't add video links into the video after I submit the video: If you would like to see the original Baofeng UV-9R+ Videos, they are located here:
• Baofeng UV-9R Plus
_________________________________________________________________
Somewhere towards the end, I said something along the lines of "Neither of these radios are part 97 certified". I have misspoken there. As far as I can read, Part 97 are standards and do not require certification. Part 15 certification is typically required.
The UV9R+ definitely does not fall under the Part 97, as the spurious emissions standards were exceeded. I will make another video on the differences in standards in the near future.
____________________________________________________________________________________
Regardless of what people think about Baofeng Radios (One side or the other), I enjoy testing any radios I get my hands on. These ones are extremely fun to test. I
In this episode, I test the UV-9R. Is there any difference between it and the UV-9R+? Kinda. I do mention multiple times in the video, and wish to reiterate: None of my tests should be considered official tests. I have however, done the tests to the best of my capabilities.
I will go over:
1. Spectrum Analyzer
2. Battery Testing
3. Water Testing
4. Extreme? Cold (-3F)
5. Testing Receive
If you don't care about the tests, I'll save you the trouble (Skip Ahead to 18:20). I don't give a real opinion, but I do give a recap and thoughts of consideration.

I purchased the plus model I am glad I did not because of any huge improvements but because I like the external mic 🎙 connections better compared to the standard 2 prong connector, the UV5R models and variants have the 2 prong external connection and they tend to break or damaged the motherboard and the main radio speaker will Quit working . I am glad I found your video though your test prove I made a good choice 👍 . Thank you.

G'day mate, picked up the UV-9R Plus 2021 model for an old mate of mine (74) and have downloaded your video so he can check it out. My unit came with a 15W (2020) inside the casing yet the one I purchased for me mate is 2021 and at 18W. Rippa video and was happy to watch it and I reckon me old mate will be pleased too. Mine was purchased for the Australian RFS and came preprogramed. Hopefully I give him the right one and tkx for the review and the informative information. The units cost a pittance (AU$40) so I'm not gunna stress over the difference unless you recommend otherwise.

Really good video man. I just got a UV-68 Pro Max V2 radio from TEMU.. It's basically a UV-9R but they claim this one is IP67-68, 10W and it has USB-C charging. Overall I'm pretty happy with it. It does have the same NT5101 firmware version as your radios though and it's advertised as a "new" model for 2023 lol I have a few UV-5R radios and they are fine, but I did realize how susceptible to water they can be. Longer ish story short, I had my uv5r and a carton of eggs in my motorcycle rear rack bag and the radio cracked an egg. About 1/4 to 1/3 of the egg contents leaked out and on to the radio and got behind the screen. It made almost the entire screen unreadable from just that little bit of fluid (the clear egg fluid is a lot thicker than water btw). Who has a frickin ham radio and a carton of eggs on a motorcycle? Well, I do. I was bringing my radio to work (for educational purposes ;D) and this day I happened to buy a carton of farm eggs from a co-worker so that's how you end up with a ham radio and a carton of eggs mixing together on a motorcycle!

The dual watch function in Japanese brands is different. It means it is like as priority watch, that it jumps to that frequency once every few seconds. The Baofeng uses a dual standby method, so both frequencies are simultaneously being ready for any signals, but the first signal will be decoded, and only it. So this is not quite the same as dual receive (that can decode both frequencies at the same time), but then it isn't dual watch if you use the nomenclature of the Japanese brands.

I bought a UV5R Mk5 from MIRKIT. I ended up sending it back. It didn't live up to any of the promises. The kit had cable that were thinner than the original Baofeng. It also had an extended battery that was lighter than the Baofeng extended battery. For the price it is better to stick with original Baofeng.

Great video! I've got a general question not just for these radios... If I were to get a fixed radio like a BTECH Mini UV-25X2 25 Watt Dual Band Base radio could it broadcast on the FRS frequencies higher then what's legally allowed if it's not part 95 compliant? I'm basically asking if the radio abides by the law. Big thanks!

Idk why this is recommended to me but good stuff. The actual power output vs advertised output discrepancies is not new nor uncommon. Actually more common than not on any radio regardless of radio brand or type. I have NEVER seen ANY radio put out the advertised or rated output. Ive been told two different reasons. 1 is that they do this to quarantee they dont break any laws on the legal limit and the 2nd i was told is the power output rating is the max output the electronics can reliably handle. This is why guys with CB radios have them peaked and tuned so that they get all the power they can legally get out the radio. My Galaxy is Peak, Tuned and Aligned and made a huge difference. I dont know if you can do the similar on these type of radios. I know you can run a Amp/Linear like a CB.

A nice gentleman (I cannot remember who at the moment) explained sometimes these sellers also advertise something like "18 watts", and what it is: VHF Power L-1W, M-3w, H -5w = 9 watts + 9watts on UHF power = 18w. Makes sense that they would do this stuff. Some others flat out lie. For example, a new "Baofeng" radio on the market right now is advertising 60W! I opened it up to discover it's just a UV5R board in a new case. Interesting to see, but no way it will ever be 60w. As for amplifiers, they are made for VHF or UHF radios. I do see them occasionally, but not super common. Thanks for the comment, have a good one.

howdy! i'm a dork and i currently transmit on a UV-5R with an external push to talk in a volunteer capacity at the direction of a licensed user. recently i've gotten tired of replacing PTTs because of the UV-5R's Kenwood connector and i like the idea of switching to the seemingly much more durable motorola connector this radio has. if i were looking for, essentially, a more durable, water resistant UV5R style HT with a motorola connector, would the UV9R be a good selection? it's important to me to maintain ease of cross programming and multiple user access to the radio i select and obviously to be easily capable of transmitting on the same freqs as my fellow volunteers.

In a situation that I believe you are describing (going from a UV5R to something more like a Motorola sytle), the UV-9R would be a like a UV-5R that's waterproof (Mainly) and has the ability to be programmed just like a UV-5R (via chirp or the front panel display). The external PTT could be used using something like this - amzn.to/3jE2HY1 .

I don't dare try to open up my UV-9R Plus, but I suspect you're right about "yet another" as far as differences go. For all intents and purposes, yours and mine should be the same thing. But mine claims to 15W. I have no way to test that though. I think maybe the circuits are "capable" of 15W but the firmware still limits actual power output. Or, maybe it's tied to amount of power available. Like how on the icom IC-705 it maxes at 5W on battery but maxes at 10W when plugged in. Maybe power is limited based on battery capacity in some way. It might explain why my battery is supposedly 8000 mAh. Or maybe it's none of that and they mean something like 15W equivilancy in loudness because of some type of pre-amp in the mic cirtuit or something or maybe it's all just a scame. It's fun trying to find out tho, isn't it? lol

Once you open the radio, you can consider the IP67 capabilities lost. If you want to conduct a fair test, you have to do it on a virgin radio. Not saying that it will survive any better, just that you can't guarantee you didn't ruin the IP67 sealing during disassembly.
