Dude, for 2 cell li-ion battery voltage up to 8.4 or 8.7 accordingly to specific chemistry is normal when charged to 100%. They are advertised as 3.7 or 3.8V per cell - 7.4 in this dual cell case.

a iwa about to comment it. The battery voltage is totally fine. In fact i would say that it is a conservative voltaje. Most manufacturers go above the 4.2v/per cell but this one does not so props for baofeng

@@HAMRADIODUDE everyone says car batteries are 12 volts, but if its actually resting at 12volts, your battery is low or under load. 12.7 fully is charged, the electrical system is 14.4 etc etc. 1.2 nimh AA batts are 1.2 when they are dead, and about 1.34 when charged. all rechargeable batteries work this way. appreciate the video, just thought i'd elaborate a little more for anyone else who may stumble this direction

Don't worry about the sound being terrible after you took the radio out of the water. The speaker likely has a mylar cone and as such, the speaker itself is part of the waterproofing. Once dry, the speaker will be fine and your sound will be great again.

Ended up working after a couple days. I'll do a follow-up soon. Programming, tips and tricks etc. I feel confident it could have done the full 30 minutes. I may just have to buy another one to test haha

I found the “notch” on the belt clip was better in the other position 😉👌

Almost bought that Rode mic. Ended up with a heil pr-40, which I bought Preowned at a good price. That rode is REALLY nice, especially for the cost

It is. It took me a few episodes to figure out what I was doing with it. Before that, I used a Heil PR781 .. Both great mics. But for 99.00, I had to buy the podmic to at least try it!. Enjoy the PR40!

regarding battery: theres a different between the nominal voltage of a battery, and the float charge of a battery. float is always a bit higher. for example: 18650's are nominally 3.6V I think, but the float is 4.2v.

Question: I like the led clock you had there ... where can I find that ?

In the near future, I'll be making a tutorial on how to build one with an Arduino. I need to finish up a video I'm currently working on, then I'll make a walkthrough on how to build this. I love the clock, it's super bright too.

most baofengs have a 0squelch feature where you can hear static it can help shake off the water

As far as your first statement about marketing, Feng Bros sells Mirkit equipment. Baofeng has always said they're "digital radios" on all their radios.

The voltage will be higher when fully charged. 7.3 is probably where the battery is supposed to be when roughly 25% charge is left. My yaesu has a 7.4V battery but is at 8.4V when 100% charged

You're right! My yaesus also do the same thing. A user pointed out in another comment the way a 2 cell battery works and that 8.4 would be normal range for the charge capacity of the battery.. I'm looking forward to a part 2 of the cherry to share this new knowledge and even compare the battery with one of my yaesus (also does 8.4v). Thanks for the comment and checking out the video!

I have a 50 dollar baofeng uv9r and I dropped it in sand and water a few inches deep, totally fine, also a analog scanner, both are fine and work fantastic, the scanner surprised me but the baofeng seems to be not too far from the “waterproof” model

I have used a few waterproof radios and its quite normal for the speakers to sound distorted after being submerged. Give the radio a shake and the water clears from the front of the speaker and all is good. Its perfectly normal.

Some marine radios even have what they call a "burp" feature. You hit the burp button and it makes an awful sound that clears the water from the speaker.

Confiando en las buenas críticas compré hace poco una Baofeng UV9R Plus, es una radio no homologada y de relativa calidad pero para segundo equipo de emergencia pues me valía, el caso es que a la semana de tenerla empecé con los problemas, el walkie se apagaba solo, el problema fue emperando hasta llegar que a veces para dejarlo encendido hay que activar cinco o seis veces el botón de encendido, tras unos minutos se apaga solo. Hice pruebas con la batería totalmente cargada y nada. Lo peor viene es que tras contactar con el vendedor, primero me dijo que era problema de la bateria y que la cargara totalmente, siguiendo sus instrucciones el problema persistía, me dijo que le mandara un video y así llego más de un mes, primero que no recibían los videos, luego que no podían abrirlos, continuaron que los mandase comprimidos (una tontería porque un video en mp4 ya está comprimido todo lo posible), y ahí están, que no pueden abrir el video. Después de tantos intentos realmente creo que me están dando largas así que ya me he cansado de de mandarles diferentes videos y en diferentes formatos y solo me queda usar el walkie como pisapapeles o tirarlo directamente a la basura ¿de qué sirve un walkie si en una supuesta urgencia ni siquiera sabes que va a encender? Fue un error comprar este walkie Baofeng y no se lo recomiendo a nadie. Saludos.

Really pass spurious emissions requirements?

I know this has nothing to do with the video BUT can you please tell me where you got the clock? I am a Ham but also a clock nerd I have somewhere around 20 Nixe Tube clocks plus the very hard to find the Heathkit Clock that receives the WWV voice and data stream that was around way before WWVB it has accuracy clear down to .1 seconds. Anyway if you can post the info that would help me feed my clock habit. Bruce 73, KG6JIY

Oh absolutely. I built the clock with an Arduino, an led matrix, some wires and open source code. I 3d printed the "stands". Would you like more info on this? I can probably do a walkthrough tutorial.

I saw that mirkit has a new addition on Amazon, UV-9R PlusMK1 (UV-82 3rd gen) 8 Watt Max Power 2023. So I wonder how good that one is!? it's $41.82 at the moment because of prime day sale!

I'm uncertain, to be honest.

I picked up one as my first radio. The battery wasn't making consistent contact, so the radio turned on and off if you touched the battery. Unfortunately they didn't have a replacement at the time (amazon), so I grabbed the older UV-9R (not plus). So far, so good. Made my first contact a few days ago. It has good sound on front end and it sounded good on my friend's base station. The older, non plus model is a few dollars cheaper ($33) and came with an extra Abbree telescoping antenna. this very moment: uv5r pro imo. the uv5r is the cheapest, and the pro part means its 8 watts, which will bump the price a bit. all these radios shot up in price just before christmas and supplies dried up. now the supplies are coming back and prices see to be coming down slowly. the uv5r was once a $30 radio, i bought a used one at a pawn shop last week for $60, but it was broke so i returned it.

I agree with Jason regarding the price of UV5R's skyrocketing. I just purchased a UV9R (not plus) that is claimed to be IP67 rated, for 32 dollars. I will be testing if there is any difference between the UV9R and the UV9R Plus (since it's not really 8 watts). The one thing is, I don't know what your needs for the radio are, so suggesting a Baofeng that's right to buy at the moment, is a little difficult. What are you going to be using it for? UV-5RTP is a true 7watt with low, mid, hi, power settings

It shows 8.40v because the battery is fully charged - 4.2v per cell. It's a dual-cell battery connected in series - 3.7v per cell = 7.4 v total. Normally, info on the battery shows just the nominal voltage of 7.4 v instead of the fully charged voltage of 8.40V

Water touching the front of the speaker will dampen the sound of any waterproof radio. That is normal. In fact many marine HTs have a button with will send a singnal to the speaker that will shake the water out of the speaker. Without that feature on this radio just slap the speaker grill against your towl covered hand to get the water out.

I was going to post a similar message. I have waterproof radios and speakers on my boat and raft. same thing- water on them dampens speaker quality til you shake em off.

Definitely. As I progressed in testing waterproof ratings, I noticed this as well. Some do a little bit better than others (the HD1 for example, does a decent job). Thanks for the input. Usually just shaking it off and/or letting it sit for a bit, fixes the issue.! 73

It's 5w+5w+5w+1w+1w+1w for a TOTAL of 18 watts on all settings.

Never did the follow up

Every Chinese radio that I have, seems to have bad filters (UVR5/ UV6/UV9R/UV10, and every Retevis, etc., cannot block out the 433 MHz signal from my outdoor radio weather sensor. I The only radios that filter well are my Japanese Alinco & Yaesu radios

This is true. I am actually hoping to do an episode in the future (Unknown when) when I compare China radios (including the FT4XR and FT65R from yaesu) to other radios (Including the FT4XR and FT65R from Japan (Made in Japan now)). My reasoning for this is, I never considered the sensitivity / filtering issues until I watched a video by Radio Preppers video regarding it - kzread.info/dash/bejne/n22dzZqpk8jbiNo.html . Your Alinco and Yaesu are probably double superhet, Baofengs are all SDR direct receive with wide band front ends

Water does get into the speaker but it has a membrane. The crackling noise after you bathed the radio is water vibrating off the membrane. Try shaking out the water Hit the radio against your arm and the water will come out 👍

Okay, I will say this once. I have the Baofeng BF F8-HP, it is also a 8 watt radio, but ONLY on one frequency. For me when using a Signal Stick antenna, which is tuned for best SWRs at 146.000, is guess what at 146.000 I get a swr reading of 1.0 and a power output of 8 watts. Yeah, go figure.

Hey there, I tested the uv9R at 146 and it was 5.1 watts. I am charging the UV9R and the UV9R plus at the moment to the fullest capabilities. Thanks for the input. If I can get any additional output on this, I will update this comment and pin it.

@@HAMRADIODUDE No clue. I also have the TYT UV8000E, a ten watt HT, and using a Abbree 18.8 inch antenna, on 146.000 I get a swr of 1.0 and power output of 10 watts. Maybe its your dummy load? Perhaps try using an antenna? P.S. and dont use the antenna that comes with the radio. Baofeng radio's take the SMA Female antenna's.

I Have THIS Model, just checked battery, its 8.21 Volts, damn, that sucks.

All rechargeable batteries are named by their lowest allowed Voltage, so 7.4V is Empty battery Voltage, 8.4V is battery Full

Roughly 4.5 tall x 2 inches wide x 1.25. These aren't official measurements. the antenna adds another 5-5.5 inches to the height.

You need to study that a bit harder. It's a bit of marketing that it has H,L power setting and add all the watts up for the 2 power settings and 18 total. 8+8+1+1 watt equals 18 watts to them. Beware.
