    I got mine in Brazil in 2021. It's just UV-9R, sticker shows 10W and battery is 5000mAh. It has no "digital mobile radio" imprint on the case. Seems very well built and I love the Motorola connector it uses. I use the radio sporadically when we to vacation trips in more than one car and since we like to do nature oriented trips, they are useful in that situation also. Nice videos, dude!!!

    Hi Jason!! Thanks for the great video, and although a lot of this is still going over my head, between your videos that I've seen and my "Ham Radio for Dummies" that I'm starting to get into, it's all slowly starting to make a little sense to me....lookin' forward to learning more!!!

    Always good to know the power output but I honestly don't know how much more I expect from Baofeng type radio. They all seem to be based on very similar build styles. I would be interested to see how the radio boards are stamped on the inside.

    Your video, a wealth of info. This video pulled up while exactly when my MFJ-870 took a dump, long story, short, They replaced it. In any event appreciate the parted knowledge of the UV 9-Pro, I have to say your video was right on point, compared to other videos on the same radio, especially when you're waiting for an MFJ-870 replacement. Keep bringing the content, I humbly request. 73 for now KC2VAB

    Hi Jason! Thanks for making this video and demonstrating your RF output power tests on these radios allowing us to get a better understanding of some of the incorrect advertisements of these radio's power output. I'd like to make 2 comments, and one question. (1) ... Perhaps the 18 watts or 20 watts they are referring to is maybe the maximum power output rating of their battery? That figure might be in the range for these batteries? However if they're doing this... it is still very misleading! I agree with your assumption... If they advertise a radio as 18 watts... the reader will assume it is RF output power they are specifying (clearly not the case here). (2) ... I remember learning the following way back in school (over 40 years ago... ouch!!!) An analog meter's accuracy is limited by the mechanical movement of the actual meter itself. Because of this, the accuracy of analog meters is much less at the lower end of the scale. My understanding is that when reading power you really don't get an accurate reading unless the meter is deflecting at least 75% of full scale or higher. Readings made below 75% of full scale will be "in the ballpark" but not accurate. So your meter in the 20w position will really only be accurate if reading 15 to 20watts of power. As it would appear that this radio is doing less than 5 watts. I would attempt to read power for these radios in the 5 watt scale to get a much more accurate measurement. Of course, I would make my initial transmission extremely short to make sure that I wasn't damaging the meter by pinning it past it's maximum movement (that is, past 5 watts). Question - Are these tests transmitting into a dummy load rated for VHF and UHF ? Or are you using an antenna? If using an antenna, how good is your SWR ? SWR could affect the output power of the radio. Plus some radios also have circuits to cut back the output power of the transmitter based on the reflected power it might detect. But I suspect a low cost radio like this might have left such protection circuitry out of its design to save money. Thanks again for your video. I hope my comments might be helpful. 73 ... Rick

    My uvr9 plus says 15 watts on the sticker on the back and it was advertised as 15. I got it over a year ago. I don’t have a meter to test it’s output but it will transmit a good bit further than a uv5r. We have about 100 acres and I got my Gmrs license a while back. We use the baofeng around the property. I have a 50 watt rig in my truck that I use if I’m taking outside of our property. Great video

    If you plug these devices into your computer and use the chirp software to download the data from the radio, you'll see some things in there that are really hard to find in the settings on the device itself... like the power saging mode that defaults I think to 1:3. I just turned it off. After I made my changed to the settings and the memory list... I uploaded it back to the radio and all is working as expected.

    I love this channel because of all the testing and the variations you show on these companies and their radios. If it advertises a certain power and doesn't reach that advertised power then how can you believe anything else they advertise? You can't trust them even on the battery power ratings (even though you don't test the batteries most of us with common sense can see something isn't right.) Personally I'll skip on purchasing the brand because of false advertising.

    When I got my Tech, I bought the requisite, new licensee first radio Baofeng UV-5R. I am able to hit a repeater 16 miles from my house. That's about it. I can hear QSOs and when asked to check in, I try but to no avail. I will be accumulating more and better equipment. That's why I like your reviews.

    As a ham operator for more than 20yrs since i was teenager, technically. Yes these baofeng radio never fail me. For deploying QRP station, disasters communication, events, i always chose bf. I only hang my Motorola's radio at my hip just for show how cool my radio is, i.e. xts series or mototrbos. Mainly i still use bf for the comm. Needless to say it does work perfectly to communicate from point A to point B. Easy enough good solid 5w pwr output for uv5r series. And that's it. when all the reports you needed send and received, the job is done. I found one video where the guy torture the uv5r until he burn the radio but still can be turn on!

    Ive bought a UV-9R plus and it says its only got a 4800 mAH battery! Also says only 10W :( Any model that ends with "TP" in the model number is supposed to mean "triple power", which means its supposed to give you 3 different power levels. On my UV-82TP for example, low power was 3W, medium was 5W and high was 8W. Realistically, maximum power was closer to 7W, but depends on the frequency you run at.

MDUV380 is dualband, but very limited number of DMR users it can hold in database. If you can spend more, Anytine AT-D878UV+ or the new AT-D878UVII+. No and it's for a really simple reason. 10 watts is only 3dB higher than 5. Squeezing all that extra power into a handheld either compromises the clean output thus making them illegal, overruns the parts thus damaging them, or costs way too much.

    @@volleyst You asked for the best models, not the highest power. The difference between 5 and 8 watts is negligible. The UV-82 comes in both a 5-watt and 8-watt version, so you can choose which one you want. I haven't done a power test on the GT3

    Funny enough I have the model that you are able to pick up and monitor satellite communication. Also on chirp you are given the capability to change all of the frequency ranges mine...lol, I was actually able to open my radio up completely not to transmit on all bands but I certainly can listen to all bands all done by chirp. And to tell you the truth the way I look at it is it's actually kind of beneficial for the price and if you're able to sift through the crap, I like (I'll just call "open source")radios with capabilities they aren't supposed to have. In all honesty, in more serious situations I like the idea of being able to scan through and listen to all bands. So my irresponsible advice would be to grab a hold of that particular "open source" radio before it is not available anymore! Brother when I say that you can open up the Bands in chirp under the frequency range I'm talkin 108.000 - 999.999...still only able to transmit on 2m, 1.25m and 70cm... oh and I forgot to mention that it does not go to Ghz. I got no reason to lie. I will say you do have to know which one of the three described in the video above have that unorthodox to capability... who knows could be all three, I just know mine does

    If anyone is planning on buying one, don't. The UV-9R series of radios aren't that great. The UV-5R series seems to work as advertised. Got a basic 5w model that puts out 5w on 2m, depending on the frequency. Had an 8w version that put out 8w on 2m, depending on the frequency. I'd like to see the triband 8w version for testing. Gave away my 8w UV-5R this morning to another ham who needed it. Thinking about replacing it with an 8w triband for 220 Mhz.

    I just bought this. I thought dual band means you will ALWAYS receiving on both bands but it seems to only receiving on the selected band (top or bottom). Is this how it supposed to work or I got a bad one?

  • @HamRadio2

    @HamRadio2

    2 ай бұрын

    Dual band doesn't mean that. The term you are referring to is Dual Receive. Dual band means it will TX/RX on 2 bands Dual Watch means it listens to both bands, then when activity shows up on one, the other is temporarily muted Dual Receive means it will hear both bands at the same time, even if both have activity.

    It's foolish to be dismissive like that because on the other hand some of most of those people you mentioned could also be Savvy enough to know how to open all of the Bands of course not transmit but open. And let me just add that I've got Uv-5r, bt-8+, one they called uv-s9 tri-bander and this one (9r). The 5 and 8 (pretty much the same damn radio except for one being tri-power) has lasted longer than 5 years and and when I say they've been to Hell and back. I might also add that I have a Yaesu Ft4 (3y) that I've had to resolder one of the solderjoints and I have an icom IC-T10 hat I use electrical tape to hold the battery and position. They both have been good radios as well but we have to just stop and realize that yes, while Chinese brands are cheaper, they don't always fall apart and fail, first and they all have a common enemy and that is called an EMP. I was a technician and operator of some of the most Advanced and capable Harris equipment in the United States Army signal Corps and I'll be the first to tell you that not all people who buy baofeng are terminologically challenged! I, on the other hand, have the most amazingly and incredibly awesome micro tool set(a set about 52 years old) And I was able to keep my Yaesu and my Icom in service (although not sure where to order a little spring loaded latch for batt)...but my uv-5r and bt-8, begged to be used when when I upgraded to FT8 and then begged again when I bought the bought the IC-T10 to replacet upgrade. I understand that Baofeng uses a few unorthodox functions and methods and to the beginner entering the world radio I wish them luck, but on behalf of the ones who know guidelines of the FCC do's and don'ts and are experienced and familiar with the view AND warranty's FINE PRINT when we have the backs taken off and troubleshooting the issue.... .....thanks but will be fine with our lousy Baofengs. Mad respect goes out to ham radio 2.0 because after leaving the Army I had no motivation to get my ham radio license and this channel sparked the fire again!

    My understanding is the Chinese companies recycle model numbers because they don't think they need to resubmit a radio for compliance checks. My understanding is companies are supposed submit a new radio every time they make a change. But they don't. I wonder if the issue is a lack of parts to build radios as the company would like to. So maybe the companies are just building what they can with what is a available. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Es gibt ja die wildesten Angaben von 5W über 8W und 15W. Ich habe eines zerlegt - steht 15W drauf! - da sind zwei H0606E RF Power Transitor ohne Kühlung verbaut. Der kann laut Datenblatt maximal 7,87W bei 156MHz Sonst so 6,84W bei 450MHz. Gesteuert wird das mit der Spannung die da an dem anliegt. Also 7,4V volle Spannung des Akkus wäre dann die 6,84 bzw. 7,87W. Nur mal so als Info für diejenigen die glauben sie hätten 8W oder 15W.

    I have a really weird issue I have with UV-9R - I can receive (hear) a transmission only after the Menu button or a flashlight button is pressed. After that, it continues to receive for a few seconds then stops receiving. Just tune to your local NOAA, turn off the radio, then turn on and you will see that it doesn't receive the transmission until the Menu button is pressed. What else: -The issue happens on 2 meters. FM stations work great. Didn’t check on 70cm though. -Checked with NOAA station and local repeaters -Checked with a standard antenna and Nagoya 771 -Turned on/off beep -Set SQL to 0 and other values -Tried Reset to factory Nothing helped

    Baofeng doesn't make a 10 watt handheld. The tri power ones are max 8 watts and if they aren't tri power then they are only max 5 watts. If you order enough radio from Baofeng they will put any name and power rating on them that you want.

  • @mjm9863
    @mjm98633 жыл бұрын

    Even if it did have the power levels, which it doesn’t, it still has a horrible front end and receiver. A couple 4W FT60R’s will outperform two of those Baofengs. The only true legit high power HT’s are the 25W Leixen Note and the 10W UV8000E, but even those have not the best receivers. Invest in a good HT with a superheterodyne receiver, even if just a Wouxon. It’s a day abs night difference on simplex.
