Baofeng UV-9G GMRS HT Review, Power Test, Range Test & Water Torture - Can The UV9G Survive?
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
**CORRECTION: In the video I said this radio can receive all the way up to 854Mhz - this was taken from the Amazon specs the day the radio was released. This was apparently a error which they have since corrected - The MANUAL says it can only scan up to 480Mhz
I review the new UV-9G GMRS handheld HT radio from Baofeng. I go over the features, usability, and issues (yah, it has some issues). I do a power-output test, range test AND, find out if the UV9G is really waterproof. and in case you were wondering, yes, this radio IS better than any UV-5R !
NOTE: Sharp-eyed viewers will notice that when the UV-9G went in the water, the flashlight was on, but at the end, it was off. This is because I cut the camera several times while the radio was in the water and had to pull it out/move/re-adjust it a few times - while doing all that I inadvertently turned-off the flashlight. My bad!

Randy, I watch a LOT of Ham and GMRS videos on YT, and I can genuinely say yours are the only ones that give me multiple LOLs while watching. Feel free to share with your sponsors that I have placed an order for this radio based on your review. Keep up the great work, my friend!

I am slowly learning about these radios. I am now becoming informed enough to realize I have a lot to learn. After a thousand review videos, I believe The Baofeng UV-9g will be my first GMRS Radio. Thank you for your honest and entertaining videos.

I think I’m going to do the same, you’ll have to let me know what you think of the uv-9g
I have been watching all of your reviews on GMRS radios and I have been waiting for the “perfect “ radio for me. I’ve tossed around buying a higher powered mobile radio for my Jeep but I really wouldn’t use it as much as some other people. Also I can move it from my house to my vehicle as needed easily. It has some great features for small, inexpensive radio. So, for $50.30 (shipping and tax included), I ordered one from Amazon. They are currently out of stock but my order is in. I had been waiting for the price drop for the license but I guess I have to bite the bullet and get it. You have a great channel. Keep the videos coming! Thanks
J-Pole FTW! It was cool to hear that the GMRS operator was using one at his home station :) As for the 'Feng, it did well on simplex with the stock duckie on, and it survived that water torture like a boss as well. Looks like the Feng of Bao has upped their game here. Assuming that they include the special programming cable with the radio we purchase, 40 greenies sounds like a value proposition for this waterproofed rig. Great show as always, Randy!
Come on guys! You got them all!!! It's not available. ☹️ Looking forward to add it to the collection. Thanks for the great videos. I love been your favorite viewer.
I think you just reviewed what may just become my new favorite radio! Thank you for all your humor and insights, and honest reviews✌🏼
You, sir, have become a Master level Sad Ham troll. I salute you and your couch.
Baofeng is my favorite brand. Glad you did a review on this radio . I also wish these were available before I bought all the HT GMRS radios that I have now.

New to this whole GMRS radio thing and I love your “expert advice”. I especially enjoyed the way you unboxed the parts. Thanks for all your help.
Another great and informative video! Looks like I'll be ordering one of these for those rainy Adirondack days.
Ordered! Can't wait to get them! Thanks for the great review as always!
Glad to know that I am still your favorite viewer. I always like that affirmation, Randy. You are my favorite KZreadr.
I have six of these radios with nagoya 771g's on them. We use them out on the water fishing so that we are able to talk between boats. The longest range we have been able to talk so far is about 25 miles simplex. We can go further apart but just haven't tried it yet. The reception at 25 miles was perfect. I purchased these because of their waterproof claim since about the only place we use these are out on the water. I just recently purchased a KG-1000g and installed it in my truck and have been able to talk 30 miles simplex on it with one of the uv-9g's. the truck being at the boat ramp and the uv-9g on a boat out on the water. So yes I am very pleased with the performance of these radios so far. These are also going to switch roles in a SHTF situation and become our security radios. We will also be trying these out when hunting season comes around as we do a lot of big exotic game hunting here where I live. Unfortunately I live in a place where there arent any repeaters for GMRS. I can hear Ham repeaters but anything GMRS has to be simplex here. For a time I was considering doing a repeater with two KG-1000g's and getting it listed on My GMRS but then....why would I do that? The cost of one was 350.00 dollars and that was without purchasing a bigger outside antenna much less having to purchase two for repeater work. So no I decided that i wasnt going to spend the money to do this. Anyway I am please with these radios and recommend them to anyone looking for something similar.
Lol….the sip at the end killed me. Watching early this morning and was afraid to wake up the family from laughing
Nice job Randy, good video, love the test of new radios Would like to see some tests on new digital radios. Thank-You
Just recently found your channel, old ham and really liking the GMRS, one license and my whole family is covered, great review, now if Baofeng can replace the voice with a British bar maid, Beofeng is extremely underrated
Nice review and I liked the water test. I am currently looking for a GMRS radio for my off road adventures and this one looks great at the price of $40.
This popped up in my feed and after 2 years or so, these radios have been great. Baofeng obviously has a mole inside Motorola. They have been flawless on convoys and large events where I hand out mostly FRS radios (which notoriously break off the antenna shroud). It's tempting to just get more of these and stay on FRS channels. Great review, Randy. These are money well-spent. I bought a bunch of batteries for these as they will probably outlast me. Thank you! 👍
Great review as always! Hopefully they will be back in stock soon on Amazon. I did order the swr/power meter you linked. Thanks again for another great video.

Does Radioddity have it in stock ? I really like them , great service.
Your videos rock , they are so educational and entertaining you know the right words to use , keep up the good work
Followed your "Affiliate Link Below" and received it yesterday. Just getting started with GMRS and HAM and so far I like both the UV-5R and UV-9G. You cannot beat the cost for a beginner. The radios works great, cable worked and so did the software from Baofeng, though I am looking forward to Chirp for this one. I promise to never be a Sad Ham.
Just purchased one. There is little gmrs activity where I live but I can’t help it. The struggle is real.
Ive used UHF sets (Uniden etc) in trucks that are not even close to being that good. For 10 miles that was perfect. Great review, thanks for the practical tests, this is what good videos are.
Future Sad Ham here; just got into your channel. Thank you for the education into GMRS. Just purchased the UV-9G today from your videos on it. Cannot wait to get it in and GMRS it up in my neighborhood! Sorry I have no friends and got excited. Please don’t judge.
Your favorite viewer just ordered one, thanks.
A comment from a HAPPY Ham. You do an excellent and comprehensive job of presenting USEFUL information! I watch all of your videos.
Thank you! I just ordered one of these and will have it in a couple of days. I am a complete newbie and I appreciate your videos. I was told by a friend there was a local HAM club in town, and I plan to investigate. There is what I think is a HAM tower less than 3 miles away that is very tall, something tells me it will be my friend. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.
Nicely done both entertaining and informative, thanks for you effort!
Awesome video, I appreciate your hard work creating these videos.
I took your advice and purchased the Baofeng UV-9G. I also watched your video on repeaters, but still a little confused. I'll watch it again. There is not much activity on my radio at all in my area (Taxachusetts) so really can't comment on performance. I have only had the radio a couple of days. I'll play with it some more and see how it goes. Thanks for the your videos regarding this radio, as I am a newby to GSMR and found them helpful. Still trying to figure things out. (Also have been enjoying your sense of humor)
So impressed with the waterproof ability.
Thought you'd like to know, I got 2 UV-9Gs about a year ago and both shipped with the CTCS off by default (yay!). It's so nice not to have to panic when the rain is coming down in buckets unlike some of my cohorts. Love this radio!
Great review, love your vids, I’d really like to see a 9G to 9G test!!!
Thank you for this video. It is very informative. I am new to the GMRS community and am learning as I go.
Randy I got this radio after getting a Btech Gmrs-pro. I like both. The IP67 rating was a must. The cost difference between the two is significant and the bofeng uv-9 works pretty well compared to the pro. Had I got the 9 first I would have two instead of the btech. Live and learn. Thanks for the reviews. As a noob I’ve watch a lot of your videos. They make me smile. Regards.
Another great video Randy...thanks, will have to check this one out.
I thought you were going to Waterboard a Sad Ham with the pitcher. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@Mr_Spock512 As with most hobbies, we Hams have a few dickheads within our ranks who make the rest of look bad. We don't like them either. MOST Hams have no problem with GMRS. I'm planning on getting a GMRS license myself just as soon as the FCC gets around to dropping the price. I love Randy's channel and I love those visits from the sad Ham! LOL
That belt clip is the same design as old LG flip phone leather case clip. I still have a couple lying around and they're very durable. I never broke one so it's a great addition. I dig that radio, too. Thanks, Randy!

Thank you for this thorough review. I know next to nothing about amateur radio but I feel more confidant about purchasing this radio now. I am planning on using it for caravan travel, kayaking and section hiking the AT.

Thanks for watching! But, just to be clear, this is not an amature radio, this is a GMRS radio, which is very, VERY different from amateur/ham radio.
The screw for the comm cover / comm connector is tiny, and there is only the one screw. The size M2.5 x 6 You will want more than one. Than you again you your videos. Informative....and VERY entertaining!
This is the only channel I watch for radio information. Mostly because of the laughs.
Great video, thank you for sharing we us. I have a UV-9R PLUS which is a great Radio and It is very similar to the one that you are showing UV9G, on my I was available to use Chirp first using UV-82WP because it wasn't one for the UV-9R but know it is one on Chirp, and I can use either one, that might work for the UV-9G.
Great vid. Awesome sound quality
Hello Randy! I absolutely love your wit and your comprehensive reviews. Q: Did the Led light time out or "other"? Thank you very much.
Randy, love your videos; they are fun and informative. I only have two questions: 1. How is the battery life on this handheld? 2. Are you planning to do a review on the Midland MXT275 in the near future?
@TheNotaRubicon

1) good for the size of the battery 2) yes, it's right here on my desk
Looks like a good little radio. The ability to load up your own customized GMRS channels is a no-brainer that nobody else seems to have done. I agree with you that each channel should be wideband by default, with carrier squelch. That said, I'll still consider my Anytone U/V 878 is the best low cost HT for everything; Ham (FM and DMR), GRMS, Murs, and commercial Part 90.

$315 is low cost? 😂
Just FYI, I am a "happy ham" (WW1ZRD), and based on this one video alone, I ordered TWO. One for myself and my wife, and used your affiliate link below. I wish you much prosperity.
You inspired me to buy a Baofeng and purchased a GT-3WP, also enamored with it. Now I'm wondering what are the differences to this UV-9G other than the preprogrammed GMRS channels, UHF520+Mhz, AM band and the fact that I wont serve a 10 year sentence by 'TRANSMITTING on said channels. Like always thank you so much for sharing your videos, you my friend are my favorite Radio KZreadr and really enjoyed your Salton Sea documentary.
Great video! Love your sense of humor!
I was looking at another radio. I forget the name offhand it was about $140 pass the water test but for $40. I just ordered it five minutes ago. Thanks for your video. It’s a good first radio.
Just ordered 2 from your link!👍🏻

Nothing wrong with a slightly curved antenna. They’re pretty good at finding hard to reach “places “. Keep up the good work.

Great Review by the way. Just got this radio, found the same CTSS codes on all the 22 channels, also having it sitting right next to a BTECH GMRS V1 and the UV-9G is getting lots of "stuttering" transmissions that the BTECH GMRS V1 does not. I like the build on this better but it doesn't seem to receive as well as the BTECH GMRS V1... at least that is my experience.

Did you have to get a license for it? If so, how much? how long did it take to get it?
just got mine a week ago and loving it so fars still new to gmrs, looks like they fixed most of what you have mentioned except the power switch # key it only works in vfo mode and not in channel mode still, got my first radio check response came through loud and clear, radio was hooked to an external antenna mounted 15+ foot high indirect line of sight(lots of trees, only 5 gmrs users within a 5+ mile radius and no gmrs repeaters near me :( mostly ham repeaters
idk why the silence at 21:51 makes me laugh, love your channel
Waterboarding a baofeng radio lmao. Great video!!
Just a quick tip that I just tried on my 905g. No need to use the screw on the programming cable, just hold it down with your hand and read or write from the radio and no lost screws
Great video. I just got this radio and since I am new to GMRS, I am figuring things out as I go. There is a little clear plastic window with a white paper in a little bag. What is this for?
Thanks. I bought one based on your recommendation.
Almost perfect> If you are listening - Baofeng - USB C Charging, please. I just can't bring myself to buy anything that requires me to haul around even more changers, wall warts, and cables. Guess I'll have to wait for the next version.
I just ordered this radio. Hope it was a good choice
Randy, glad to watch you. Are this radio lock to specific channels? I read on Canadian website, they are lock, without the chance to use gmrs for example
Great videos
Baofeng must be monitoring you. I purchased 6 UV-9G radios. They all had the ctcss/dcs codes off. Thank you for the information.
Randy is the Monty Python of GMRS KZread radio reviews.
So I've been trying to decide between this radio and the baofeng GM 15 pro. Have you used the gm 15? If so which would you recommend? They seem to have all the same specs unless there's something I'm missing. I enjoy your videos, keep them coming, thanks
When I see Randy's videos I think "I should get one of them GMRS radios..." then I remember I am a HAPPY HAM and I use FRS for outdoor activities with my kids and I have to empty my shopping cart of GMRS devices.
is amazon the only source? thanks, awesome videos!
I just got my uv 5r on friday and i gotta say im baofeng for life !
Hey man just ran across your channel recently awesome information and funny as hell at times question I am looking for an s h t f type radio and plan on getting a set of four what would you recommend
Love your commentary. You would have fit right in with the Submarine Community!

Randy, My wife and I are enjoying your slow descent into deep snark over time. Do the standard Baofeng accessories (extended batteries, mic, etc.) work with this model?
