Balance Redox Equations in Acid Example 2 (Advanced)
We'll go step by step through how to balance an oxidation reduction (redox) reaction in acidic solution. This example is advanced. Most importantly, both charges and atoms must balance. Here are the steps: first, calculate oxidations numbers for all the elements in the equation. Next, figure out what is being oxidized and what is being reduced. Then, write half reactions for the oxidation and reduction. After that, balance each half reaction: first, for the atoms other than O and H, then for O and H, and finally for charge by adding electrons. After being balanced, the oxidation and reduction half reactions are ready to be added back to together. Make sure that the number of electrons is the same in the oxidation and reduction half reactions. If they are not, multiply one or both of the half reactions to make the number of electrons the same. Then, combine the oxidation and reduction half reaction, canceling out stuff that appears on both sides of the equation. Lastly, do a final check to make sure that everything balances: both atoms and charge.

Professor DeWitt, Your videos are helping me so much. I did horrible in Chemistry during high school. I got off with the wrong foot with the subject. Now, I'm in college, and I stumbled upon your videos when I needed some clarification with gas laws. They were so helpful. You have gotten me to enjoy this subject. I love it! I took my first Chemistry exam in college last week. Got the result back tonight, and got a 92%! The class average was 60%. I'm amazed. It's all thanks to YOU!

sir, u are ,simply put it this way-awesome ......... u made such hard concepts so easy ...... i actually have started enjoyin chemistry thank u sir
Superb Explanation!
you are an amazing teacher,, love your awesome videos
Dr. DeWitt, when we have to balance out the charge in a redox equation, we do it by adding electrons... why do we make it a priority to cancel out the electrons on both sides of the equation, even if we have to multiply one part of the equation by a natural number... why is it so necessary.... also thank you so much for your videos I'm so lucky to have people like you around... your videos have helped me so much... i used to be an average student, now i am the topper of my class... and you are the only guy that deserves any acknowlegment for that👍👍👍

Also ... why do we only add H2O and H+ and OH- to fulfill the demandd for hydrogen and oxygen, does it mean that the reactions take place in an aqueous medium?
Thank you ,, you help me a lot in my high school ! 😊
Nice Job man!
I learnt more about it thanks 👍
Tfff you explained itt likee likee it's a work of your right hand it seem so easy mann

love you!!!
Thank you very much for posting this video, it has helped me immensely. If NaCO3 was used in the equation, would it I still put the +5 on the C to match the -6 on the O3, or would I need to somehow divide the +5 between the C and the Na?
Excellent Video, thank you so much #ThanksTyler
If this was a videogame, you would be (Teaching level: 100[MAX])! Thanks as usual, you are the best!
best best best best best bessssst sir no one like u u r the best
