19.2 How to Balance Redox Reactions (Half-Reaction Method) | General Chemistry
Chad provides a detailed lesson on how to balance redox reactions (i.e. oxidation-reduction reactions) specifically using the half-reaction method. The lesson begins with an introduction to redox reactions showing how to identify the species being oxidized and the species being reduced and then the reducing agent (aka reductant) and oxidizing agent (oxidant). Two examples of balancing redox reactions are then worked out. The first doesn't have any H+ in the net reaction and so there ends up being no difference between balancing it under acidic conditions vs basic conditions. But the second is balanced both under acidic conditions (the default) and basic conditions. Chad demonstrates that the difference between the two involves neutralizing all the H+ in the reaction.
I've embedded this playlist as a course on my website with all the lessons organized by chapter in a collapsible menu and much of the content from the study guide included on the page. Check this lesson out at www.chadsprep.com/chads-gener...

You've been a life saver, Chad! We are using the same textbook, so these lessons line up perfectly. I wish I would've found you earlier in the semester!

Hi Lexi! I don't have them available early. However, this playlist is simply a replacement for my old General Chemistry playlist. I've updated the curriculum (and improved the video quality), but this entire chapter is already complete in my old playlist as well. You'll find the first lesson for the chapter on electrochemistry here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/fGd_2LVvfZS_itY.html Hope this helps!
This is amazing! Thank you.

Hi thank you soo much for this great content! You're truly a life saver! Can you please make a video on the oxidation number method in balancing? If not, can you please tell me when to use this method or that method cause it's kinda confusing, I'd be very thankful for that.

In the beginning of the video why is the charge on oxygen -1 and not -2 like it usually is?

To balance the charge of the hydrogen
Hi, for the first reaction dont we add 6electron because (8-6=2) ?
@ChadsPrep

Hey Malia! I see your reasoning but it is the reactant and product side of each reaction that must be balanced in that step rather than the oxidation reaction charge balancing the reduction reaction charge (writing the overall reaction those will cancel out in the end) So if we look at the top reaction with 8H+ on the product side, the reactant side has zero charge so the product side must add 8 e- to make the product side zero. Hope that helps!
Why punching? Why not a student loves your videos so much that they go to your house to give you a high five?
