How to Calculate Oxidation Numbers Introduction
We'll learn how to determine the oxidation numbers or oxidation states for a the elements in a chemical compound. The oxidation numbers tell us how electrons are divided up or shared between atoms in a chemical compound. The oxidation numbers also tell us how electrons move in an oxidation reduction (redox) reaction. There are a set a rules that we use to determine oxidation number. Group 1A elements (alkalai metals) always have an oxidation of +1. Group 2A elements (alkaline earth metals) always have an oxidation number of +2. Elements on their own have an oxidation number of 0, and monatomic ions have an oxidation number that is equal to the ionic charge.

This man is amazing. He's saved my chem grade so many times.
I remember finding this channel my towards the end sophomore year of high school when I had to take chem. I literally did not understand any of the class but this guy really helped me out in the end. Now I’m in my first year of college as a nursing major and I can honestly say no one else could ever explain things simpler than him. He actually makes chemistry really enjoyable and I really like the science that I HATED when I was in high school. He’s so great!
After 5 years of no schooling, I relate very well with what I did in high school as I a first year university student doing science and that is all through your videos. Thank you Tyler, God bless you...
Definitely a visual learner, but you sir, have a magnificent way of explaining things in layman's terms which has helped me pass my class. Thank you sooo much! Hopefully you would consider explaining organic chemistry next? Perhaps?
You're awesome man the information you give is 100% clear wish all the teachers were like you
I seriously love you you have no idea 😂 I’ve been trying to understand what’s been going on in class for a couple of days but you explained it so nicely. Super organized. Thank youuu
Even after 7 yrs you still shine the most. I need a teacher like you in my school who is so passionate about their subject :"(
Thanks Tyler for all of your videos. I am struggling in Chemistry at the moment and your videos give me so much hope. With watching you and dedicating time to your videos, I am confident that I will actually be able to understand this stuff. So much to remember and grasp, but you make it so easy for me to get it. I really appreciate your help and I'd love to donate. You're the best! May God Bless

You have been a life saver. I'm taking chemistry online this summer, and you are basically my teacher. Thank you so much for your videos!

I'm gonna do the practice problem on the next video to help me remember how to do it, but no, I'm not shaky on this thanks to you. Your explanation is clear af.
Ive been struggling to understand this topic under organic and inorganic chem unit at uni. My lecturer has been teaching this for 3 days and I have not understood a thing! But after watching this 13-minute video, I began to understand everything BETTER compared to the 3 day lecture at class. This guy makes chemistry lesson so fun and interesting, saved me from dropping out the subject.
The way you teach you actually care that people learn and understand rather than to make them feel thick and make cash on them. I wish you all the best.
I am going to cry man Such good explanation literally it took 15min for understanding and in my class they are taking 1-2hr for this And also the rules u have given are soo good thank u soo much I recommended your channels to all my friends
YOU DESERVE A MILLION SUBSCRIBERS I CAN TELL YOU HOW MUCH YOU HAVE HELPED ME !!!!!!!! Your explanation is more then great and you deserve more support
Hello, I know this video is 5 years ago but I'm really thankful for your videos because it helps me a lot in my online class. I love your passion in teaching. Thank you so much!
Watching this video might singel handedly save my last chemistry test. I was so confused by the rules that my teacher tought me and I felt like there was so much more that I needed to know to figure this stuff out. And it seems that was the case! Never once did they mention the rules about 1A having +1 and 2A +2 or that the halogens usually have -1! And the way you did the calcutaions so simple and easy to understand, love it! I know it's an old video but thank you so much for your help.
Thanks! I teach high school chem and I use your videos to give a second explanation and it helps because I typically forget details that are covered in your videos.
Learning chemistry is a struggle i am in grade 9 and my dream was To be a chemist which soon died cuz i found chemistry too hard and then i discovered your channel and when i watched one video i realized that I didn't even realized that time was passing cuz i actually enjoyed and understood stuff thank you very much for being this GOOD OF A TEACHER WE LOVE U SIR
