Hybe fans can get crazy defensive whenever their favourite idols are dragged for their lack of vocal skills, but only have these less than underwhelming performances at their disposal 🫡. If that's not hella embarrassing, I don't know what is. Side note, let's wish for Seungkwan's and DK's (and Jungkook's, to a lesser extent) continued well-being. Single-handedly carrying an agency with over 40 artists on their back must be tough.

true, often times it's because the 'best' vocalist is typically only the best in the context of their own group so there's an inflated sense of skill amongst the fans. i feel like hybe expects everyone to be like jungkook (aka self-taught vocalist who skipped the predebut vocal lessons and learned how to sing through youtube) without realizing that it would be extremely beneficial to give not only proper vocal lessons but proper TIME in their schedules to practice said vocals. lessons once a week wont do shit if there's not dedicated time for near-daily practice they way to do for dancing.

KIOF, from a nonexistent company, being better than Hybe’s entire (homegrown) stable of vocalists is definitely an indictment of the company and its priorities… it makes them tons of money, but it’s frustrating for those of use who hopped onto the kpop train in the late 2000s and were accustomed to a basic level of singing ability being required for the person billed as the main vocal.

I can’t help but wonder if Siyeon’s vocal qualities and style make it sound worse than it is. I don’t claim any proficiency in singing, and I certainly LOVE her voice and love what she brings to Dreamcatcher. But I also know we regularly talk about her vocal struggles, but also I see consistency in how she sings, which then makes me wonder if it’s a weird stylistic thing that’s contributing to the sound. Just some idle speculation! Wonderful video as always ❤

  • @mentalmaker03

I was just thinking about the same thing! All of her high notes I've heard from her lately have the same sound to them. They sound very hoarse and like she's barely able to get it out, but, amazingly, she still does and holds it pretty well, too. Like, I wonder if she decided to change her style of singing to try and include grit or fry in it. If that is true, she should still take some vocal lessons for that. Using distortion without technique is a quick way to permanently damage your vocal cords.

@@mentalmaker03 it’s been 15 years of singing and 7 of touring, she is absolutely fine and it’s a stylistic decision. She’s consistent because it is a choice she is deliberately making. SuA had nodules in 2018 so DC is very aware of needing to maintain good vocal health.

Secondly, I highly suggest you include Shinee's Jonghyun high note in Lucifer's bridge because it covers a lot of the characteristics mentioned when talking about belting. That moment includes: great technique, it is about ten seconds long, it sounds effortless and passionate, and for the cherry on top he adds a well controlled vibrato in the middle of the note

As an atiny myself, i think it’s important to be realistic - he undeniably has a beautiful, powerful voice, and even at his worst it sounds decent, but pretending that his technique is perfect is just delulu, and honestly, belting as often and as forcefully as he does, doesn’t bode well for his long term vocal health…also, he’s far from the only member of ateez that can hold a nice tune, and treating him like a one trick belting pony and giving everyone else lackluster parts doesn’t do him or the others justice

Thanks for including JiU. People forget she’s the 2nd best vocalist in the group just because Yoohyeon and SuA gets louder parts. But that’s a stylistic choice made by the producer. JiU has a more lighter vocal tone than Yoohyeon and SuA, hence why she’s dubbed the Queen of Bridges. Because her vocals is tone is very melodic. But that just the color of their voices. Technique wise, JiU has always been the healthiest.

Yeah, every artist has an off day and you can't expect them to sing that well all the time. But for me, SM artists show more consistency in their vocals, even though it may be less than ideal, just because of the vocal training they've gone through. I do think SM artists have the best artists in terms of singing technique and clarity in the vocals.
