Honestly performing WELL at Coachella says a lot because artists are performing in the worst conditions ever. It's hot, windy, and sandy, and ppl are drunk and a bit gross in general. If you can sing well in such an uncontrollable environment, it deserves so much praise and respect 👍🏻👍🏻

The funny thing with Coachella now is how the opinions of people watching the livestream change things. Actual live show and critic reviews right after LSF's stage were actually quite good, matching reviews for BP 2018. It was only after comments from the live stream about their vocals that the discourse majorly shifted and articles started changing to cover that instead. In a way, it's a bit annoying since the eventual outcome will be performers targeting the streaming audience, since it's much larger, and sacrificing the live performance factors in favor of giving a performance that looks better for recordings instead. Sigh.

it's frustrating when BTOB is called monster of live vocal by the industry but not included here.

I can't say I'm a Melody (but I love BTOB) but it makes me sad many people don't appreciate BTOB's vocals. All of them even the rapper have incredible vocals, there's no bias in that statement.

MAMAMOO, Nmixx, EXO, red velvet, kiss of life, svt and sf9 has the best vocals and I personally think they don’t need any of those backtracks.

MAMAMOO, BTOB, SHINEE, EXO, RED VELVET, SNSD = Live Vocal Power no matter the singing conditions. They don’t hide from encores and behind heavily engineered vocals. They sound good anywhere and with confidence.

For me, Red Velvet and Mamamoo is the pinnacle of live singing. They are never afraid to do it live even happier if they can do it live.

Yep, that’s mostly because when twice’s survival show was filming those three would have already debuted had not 2 other trainees of 6mix left jype a few months before debut. The Japan team and kids team of twice weren’t set to debut until much training later after 6mix debuted had they were still 6. For example chaeryoung of itzy was on the same survival show. Her skills would be vastly inferior then they are now had she made twice instead of debuting with the regular amount of training she did before itzy. Tzy-yu would be close to yeji level had she not made twice and trained into itzy…

SM didn't upload that Irene and Seulgi's practice video but Irene sent it on bubble in low quality lol. But they sound so stable & good even while dancing. I wish SM let them perform on stage with minimal backing track. They're clearly capable.

But the fact that Kiss of Life is a rookie group and had the balls to attempt the song (and KILLED IT!) just shows how much skill they have. From what I’ve seen, their cover is being well received by BEG fans

I've seen some people complain that Belle did an 'easier' high note but I also read she did one for like 3 ? people at once so yeah, I dont trust how thats 'easier'. And besides, obviously it wont be the same, they aren't even a year old as a group and BEG were a senior group in their 6th year (apparently, Im just a casual listener at best) when they released that song. Sometimes its not just talent but also experience.

@@glaciemdraco I wouldn't categorize that as a rap but like, let's be real, most Kpop stans don't really know what rap is anyway 😭😭, the most reliable source there is is CarKpop, but like, it's just my opinion anyway, who knows, I probably am not into slow and flowy raps and prefer faster ones, but like, it's fine, SM rappers being able to sing is good enough for me, most idols are usually pushed into the "rapper" position because they can't really carry a tune most of the time

i think the lack of live vocals in kpop atm is why i’m starting to gravitate towards kbands! groups like xdinary heroes, day 6, lucy, the rose and more consistently sing live and it’s just so refreshing to me (especially as the vocals are always insanely good) it’s even better when they get to play their instruments live too! i feel like the standards for kpop groups and kbands are pretty different though seeing as kbands don’t dance and so the main performance element is through their voices and music

@@eleanor_carys Well for Thai pop I mostly listen to soloists (e.g. Jeff Satur) as for JPOP, Im still getting to know many groups but so far I like the boy groups Be First, Mazzel and EXILE (this last one is a bigger group than NCT so just a heads up) As for girl groups, I really like Girls2. The company of Mazzel and Be First is also planning to debut a gg in the near future so Im looking forward to them new, still finding out what I like tbh.

It’s always amusing seeing Itzy brought up in the comments of these videos. You can tell what the creator thinks when he uses clips of them singing while discussing lip syncing. There’s plenty of clips out there, if you really want to see check out a fan cam of their recent Auckland concert. Ryujin trips while walking backwards during her solo, the mic comes away from her face while she corrects herself - and the “singing” carries on as normal. Itzy routinely use lip syncing, loud backtracks, and post-production audio editing, and to deny otherwise is kind of weird … but understandable, if you’re a fan in denial.

Mamamoo is the pinnacle of live singing and performing for idol group in SK

Also, they were saying that there's a reason why SM idols are starting a variety show and hosting empty concerts...like doesn't change the fact their Vocalists are better than most, even their rappers even dare to take on their main Vocalist's highnotes

One defense I see a lot of fans falling back on nowadays is that it's unrealistic to expect live vocals with involved choreography and for awhile as kpop routines got more and more intricate I accepted that as an explanation. But then it dawned on me that that's a bare minimum expectation for a performer. Anyone who wants to be an idol and perform onstage should at the very least be expected to dance and sing decently and there's a plethora of examples to pull from showing that it's possible. If companies care enough to appropriately prepare idols for debut that would be the norm. Instead the criteria keeps getting diluted to the point where it becomes widely accepted that a group won't even be able to approximate their recorded sound even if they're standing still. Performance quality should always matter if for nothing other than respect for artistry. If fans want the prestige and bragging rights of their faves being recognized for their talent and artistry then they need to expect that from the people they support.

And for me nowaday people care too much about just hiting the note right (because most of idols now can’t), but not enough about actually enjoy music while singing. Like you can hear Solar excitement in that like 3s clip, not just her singing the rock song live. (Funfact: Most of Mamamoo concerts have more than 50% of no backing track and 100% of live vocal. Even their solo concerts)

Mamamoo deserves to feature more on this video, you shouldve make them as an example for each chapter. They excel everything in terms of vocal, dance or even stage presence (theyre good at commanding audience). Please watch their concerts and youll see what I mean. Mostly ive seen are from Big 3 Companies

i really love when you do videos like this showcasing singing, because as someone w/no vocal experience it really helps me differentiate between live and backtrack (besides the egregious examples) hope ur doing well!

Exo, red velvet and nmixx are on top, especially nmixx is really a top tier group

Onew recently had 3 fanmeets where he sang live acoustic versions of his songs. I can’t express how refreshing it was and how many years it added back to my life

I’m happy vocals are being called out now in k pop. There are too many performers that are lip singing and can’t sing well live, when they should be trying to improve their singing. This is why kiss of life are getting noticed because they sing live so well.

I wish BoA got more love when it comes to live singing. She’s no stranger to lipsyncing, of course, but most of her concerts are 100% (or very close to being 100%) live. She always sounds great and has such wonderful stage presence. I know she’s 1st gen and not as popular anymore, but it would be nice if more people sung her praises. She’s so good.

I think dreamcatcher deserved a spot in this video, i know they are not the best tecnically speaking, but their commitment to sing live with their hard coreos is really impressive and outstanding in kpop. However great job as usual

For me girl Generation, Exo and Red Velvet are best when it comes to live singing. Today's idol start touching their earpiece for bad singing while back in days snsd used to sing entire song without any earpiece

God I wish we could go back to (real) live singing being an automatic expectation when it comes to music show performances. I'm sorry but these newer groups cannot use the excuse of "their choreos are much harder" to be lip syncing almost all their music show performances because as a 2nd gen stan myself, I can confidently say this is just not true. 2nd gen choreos were just as dynamic and challenging in their own ways, and yet they still managed to sing live for most of their performances because it was the norm, it was the general expectation. maybe if we made it the norm again, these kpop companies will train their new artists better before debuting them instead of relying on modern technology to hide the fact that they can't sing for shit.

I feel like a lot of people dont talk about itzy’s live singing is because when itzy first started out, a lot of their title tracks had a good amount of talk singing on them. The actual parts singing to a melody were divided up very cleverly and i think it was done on purpose. So a lot of people are of the impression their songs are still structured like that when they aren’t. Really thinking about their songs dalla dalla-loco most of the verses of their songs were talk singing, some rap, and maybe one or two lines of singing. itzy improved on their live singing abilities alot though.

Words can't describe how much I love NMIXX. Their passion for music and singing just connects with me so much.

I remember NMIXX haewon said in an interview, that their gen who JYP started the need to practice dancing jumping around while singing on mic as mandatory routine. Which different from TWICE gen where they practice sing and dance separately. Of course NMIXX has different coaching for dancing and singing, but still when practicing they MUST dance while singing. You guys can watch all their videos of choreography practice, all of them are dancing while singing live. Have fun!

For me, the groups that can sing live are Mamamoo and BTOB

aespa is so frustrating cos they always sound good but lipsync 98% of their music show performances SM needs to get with the times Red Velvet is also the case. They lipped their entire set in their recent performance. It's so hilarious to hear them sound immaculate when performing then the talking part comes and their mics turn on and the sound quality is night and day. Like... we know what Wendy and Seulgi sound like live, right? Why are you hiding their voices?

Yeah Wendy, Seulgi and Irene are amazing live singers. Wendy sang live in her solo cb promotions and was great. Which recent performance are you talking about?

@@Livid1481 KPMG 55! I saw it uploaded 2 days ago but the event itself was from the 16th. They performed 4 songs. The funniest thing about them is Wendy is a horrible lipsyncer because she's so unchallenged so she overcompensates with her dancing and expressions, so it's so easy to tell even if you mute them lol. It's like the opposite of Taeyeon and Ningning who both look bored when lipsyncing.

This part! SM vocalists are talented but most of them lip sync, not just the girl groups. Even shinee’s been lip syncing most of their recent comeback promotions

I hate how they always excuse that sm artists can only sing live if they're getting paid like?! Its still important to let their artists sing live even in music show performances, it adds more real feel to the performance than lipsyncing.

also, any live performance of the group N.flying is just chef's kiss. they are so talented!

i was just watching one of exo's obsession live stages and encore from 2019?? jaw was on the floor they're insane to pull off such incredible choreo while going OFF with their singing

wish you would mention more of shinee on this vocal vids. for eg for recent perf u can check out Dont call me encore. leader of shinee, onew, also held a fan meet where he sang live with no backtracks recently.

I know there are many artists, but if you are going to do more parts you should definitely include BtoB, INFINITE, SHINee, EXO, Ailee and there are many more actually, KPOP is full of good artists

bro one group that was/is literally live singing like 95% or more of the time is 2PM, like even when some of them had bad days THEY WOULD BE LIVE SINGING!! of course they mostly have good days, but just wanted to throw some appreciation out to 2PM :3

I really admire rv irene and wendy's hard work on improving their vocals. Its rare to see especially they are in a 10-year old group. Their improvements vocally for the last 3 years is chef's kiss!

Mamamoo, KIOF, Dreamcatcher and BTOB will always be my favorites when it comes to live singing. I can appreciate NMIXX and Twice Jihyo, Nayeon and Jeongyeon too :)

the mere fact that SM was gatekeeping EXO's recording behind the scenes for such a long time shows how good they are in vocals dept. And they keep getting better and better.

itzy always surprise me for being so stable while executing their difficult choreography. They are probably the in bottom few in terms of vocal technique amongst the well known 4th gen girl groups but their live performances are never lacking. normally when the dance starts to influence the ability to sing properly, it is very important to fall back on your vocal fundamentals, but with the weak of singing foundation among the members, im always amazed how they still sound so good. either they are tweaking their moves allowing them to have a stable core so the notes come out in a steady flow or they are just practising overtime in which i really commend their effort.

I recommended btob, you should listen to them.. Even in music show, you still heard their raw vocal

I think new groups are starting to show more live singing, except for illit I think the groups debuting so far have good vocals and stability (Btw I'm not hating on illit, some of the girls have potential but they definitely need to improve). I'm curious to know your opinion about the new boygroups too, I think Riize and ZB1 are pretty good. Especially I love Zhang hao's voice and he's always singing louder than the backtrack, even during a dance practice he started to sing when no one was singing. I'm not sure if we will return to 2nd gen era but I wish, because I find more enjoyable to watch a performance with vocal flaws than a performance where they "sing" perfect but look like robots. That's the main reason why I prefer to watch old kpop awards shows

Hao is a singer who loves singing and it's so evident and cute to see 🥹 Taerae as well. It's actually quite rare for idols to have a significant improvement after debuting imo but Taerae showed a massive improvement from his band days to boys planet to idol life and he continues to improve. It's evident when you compare past clips to present ones (even though he was always strong) Him having a series where he harmonizes with the members on the spot is also proof of his love for singing they're a nice main vocal duo, technically, personality wise and chemistry wise. i wish they and zb1 as a whole gained more appreciation for it outside their fandom and the vocal community bc they're definitely one of the strongest 5th gen groups vocally

@@luvrinas I agree with everything you said. Taerae is my favourite vocalist of this gen along with Belle. For me kiss of life and zb1 are the strongest 5h gen groups vocally, followed by babymonster and riize

I suggest you listen watch one of the many Shinee rehearsals videos, since they were pretty known for giving their all in practices

Some of the groups and some of the newer group's are trying to bring back live singing. And I'm here for it! I don't care about all the excuses of some fans of some certain company but if there standards are low it's there choice I go for the one that have a high self standard groups.

Haiii, I recently came across this vid of lesserafim singing smarter at the Jennifer Hudson show… people were saying that it was live and all, but I’m just pretty sure it wasn’t. Or it was pre-recorded or it was tuned but it was certainly not live! I would love to hear ur opinion on thissss
