INDEED! I've been a Kpop fan for ages and I've seen almost all of them from 2nd gen to 4th gen live BUT EXO really takes the cake for having the clearest and most stable live vocals in the industry. EXO's singing skills are not scam.

Watching Wendy's clips made me a bit mad because the over-editing felt offensive at this point 😂 She sounds great as it is and I don't get why the staff think such minor mistakes are so unforgivable they had to edit em 🙄

Live vocals should be live. Simple as that. I mean, why label it as live, if your going to edit it to the point it doesn't even sound like them singing? And they often don't do a very good job at the vocal "touch ups". Sometimes the editing of the vocals is so obvious, not to mention, pooly done, they end up sounding like Alastor from Hazbin Hotel. Like, if your going to edit vocals, you could at least make it sound good. Isn't the point of the editing to make it sound "good" ?

True. Many fans have never heard real live. Being able to sing is one thing while being able to sing and dance simultaneously is another whole different skill set. Even Beyoncé doesn’t sing an entire song while dancing without a little help of back track in certain parts.

I'm so sick of a very loud "backing track" on music shows or even on concerts. Like, yeah. You have to protect your artists to look good all the times but damn, it's their jobs and no one force them to be a singer.

It's part of their job and they are still doing their job even with overuse of backtracking that their staff forces on them even when they obviously have the vocal ability, because a huge part of their job is looking good on camera and their visual appearance, I honestly think that those 2 things are a bigger part of their job than singing is, because of how popular plastic surgery is there and not to mention the fact that the slightest imperfection on stage or off stage will have a lot of people complaining. Waiting for someone to say that I'm just making excuses.

its okey they use backtrack as long as their own voice, rather than lipsync using backup singers voice. they have to protect their voice because sometimes they heavily perform on many concert with very pack schedule without proper rest flying from one place to another place. even you talk everyday without stopping for 3 hour without rest, you might loose your own voice on a long term.

I picked on them not singing live for years but anytime I saw someone points it out K-POP Stans would react sooo badly they harass and attack anyone they deemed a hater. @@uc6758 yeah I know. In Wendy's first album she sang live cuz it didn't had choreo. But I saw some Red Velvet, aespa & got the beat music shows, they were all pre-recorded. So I thought they would make Wendy lipsync for her 2nd album since it has choreo but I was very pleasantly surprised to see all her stages were very clearly live. I don't know about other SM soloists, I haven't watched their stages.

Imagine how many SHINee, Exo and Red Velvet content we would've got if the members were actually allowed to do things their way. CBX and KyungSoo have so many activities throughout this year, something they totally missed for 5-6 years. Taemin would've been THE ace of the whole company if they actually supported his solo career.

They do have backing tracks but it's on the quieter side compared to other groups. Also doesn't hurt that EXO takes vocals seriously --- they still take vocal lessons. They know they have the talent and they still continue to work on improving, that's why they're very comfortable singing live, acapella, etc. Can't wait for their next tour as a full group!

@@janelmacugay6427 backtracks in tours should be normal. Singing such hard songs completely live for hours alongside dancing will be quite tiring & damaging for the voice. It's an issue if it's so loud that you can't hear the live vocals at all. Otherwise it's fine.

The Killing Voice edit of Mamamoo is an interesting example because like... Hwasa was ill that day, so to a certain degree, I could actually understand a limited amount of editing to support her. But they didn't have to go so far and edit everybody, especially so obviously. It would have been better to use a light hand and then just disclose it ("All the vocals here were live, but some edits were made to support X, because they were still recovering from the flu.")

All music shows around the world do it. The microphone is designed to enhance the vocal input from the singer. Can one of the greats like Beyoncé sing, of course, no question. but if she did a Killing Voice, they would edit it and autotune it to make great sounder even greater. In their attempts to achieve perfection, K-pop companies have sacrificed authenticity, which is sad 😞 P.S. Wendy is still our vocal queen 👸 💙

Even BTOB also being the victims of Dingo Killing Voice. They edited out a lot of adlibs and harmonization. THIS! Dingo should've used other type of microphone, the ones that are not widely sensitive (or maybe just put the boys a bit further from each other). They should've known the type of artist they're inviting. BTOB is known for their complex vocal layering and harmonization, as well as being a loud ass vocalist. Because of this unrealistic edited performance, we couldn't get to properly hear members' belting and adlibs in some songs and Eunkwang's extended high note in Finale. The four-way high note harmony in It's Okay and I'll Be Your Man also sounds off cause I'm sure the voices are overlapping with each other's mic so Dingo really had to edit it in some way.

i get so frustrated when sm doesn't let their groups sing live except sometimes like we know groups like nct,exo, aespa, red velvet can sing extremly well live

Bro I literally came here bc I’ve been complaining this about my faves (nugu group btw). They just had a comeback recently and I see alot of people preaching how great their “live vocals” are in showcase and music shows but really, it sounded very much pre-recorded. I can tell by the lack of movements in their voices while singing, and I’m surprised many fail to see that. They are my ult group and I’m sorry but no. I ain’t defending them for this. It’s bad enough they barely have any proper singing contents even after 3 years of debut and it’s frustrating bc they have so much potential

NMIXX STAGE PRACTICE! that's the first time I'm SHOCKED when idols can PERFORM at their fullest potential. NMIXX is literally the KPOP I've been looking for this whole time. props to the girls!

That's why I'm glad exo's concert tour(at least their concert footages) were kept as minimum as possible with post production, especially after exo'rdium tour. If they went off key, you can definitely noticed. Today's fanmeeting too, I'm glad they keep it as raw as they can.

K-pop is the most tricky thing, I always thought I was good at identifying live and edited singing, but in K-pop it's very difficult with so much editing, strong tracks, pre-recordings, it's crazy. I don't understand why they want everything to be so metrically perfect, it's ridiculous and annoying, at least for me.

The companies fear that their artists looks like they dont sing perfect like the other artists with edited vocals, so no one wants to be the first to stop doing it, because the standars are stupidly high right now with all this edited vocals, for example people wanted to cancel Aespa for singing bad at Coachella(????????), and now they are praising Aespa sing at Coachella to cancel Le Seraphim for singing bad at Coachella, the irony. Another fact that comes to the table is fanbases, big part of Aespa being cancelled for singing bad at coachella(????????) was blackpink fanbase, so if you stop editing your artists, other fanbases will use the chance of those raw vocals to attack your group because they will sound worst than the edited standard.

Because it is simply impossible to have a stable industry in which it is about creating a band every year of the 8 most beautiful singers who dance and who sound minimally in tune, without using autotune.

Thats why I always watch Gidle recording, Red Velvet recording and Mamamoo live stages. Atleast once or twice a week. And Nmixx too sometimes

Every single Korean television/KZread show is edited/auto tuned, but still they're groups that don't need it like exo,mamamoo,superjunior etc because they can actually sing live

Let's not pretend that SM is still eating away at vocals. Furthermore, Wendy's voice is affected by the nodules and yet she is delivering 98% on the frees without autotune and correction.

It's problematic because when many netizens do hear occasional raw vocals, like an encore or an idol having a bad day, they all attack and say the idol can't sing. Ignorant to the fact that their own favs aren't any better and they've just never heard their favs raw vocals.

This is why other than music show encores and concert encores, I always hope for any of the members from my fav groups to do some singing for like 1 min just for fun in live stream (vlive for an example) or them dropping suddenly a song cover like that 😅 (Hope I’m not the only one who ask for this type of genuine vocal content lol)

The good thing about live is it’s lively, it’s emotional. A live performance doesn’t need and shouldn’t be exactly like the MV. People now care too much about the technical issues and forget that music should be a way to express emotions and connect people together

I’m so so so glad that SNSD’s era was before all these “perfectionists” era.. today’s visual, over processed music, the genre, live performances / vocals, minors debuting too early are just too painful to watch 😢

The SNSD encores are amazing

Love them or hate them fancams done by fansites have the best live performances especially the ones from festivals and concert, you can pinpoint if the backtrack's too loud or not. SM and YG artists' live performances have been the ones i like watching so far

The way most of the examples are from SM definitely proves they provide and acknowledge the importance of vocals in music. I actually wonder if 'that' company will reign as the number 1 (considering the situation of SM rn), what would happen to Kpop music? It's sad that new fans right now couldn't experience what we (older fans) experienced .

When we tell non fans of NMIXX to watch stage practice, this is what we mean. The MV isn't their final form and you'd truly appreciate them more when you hear them live live.

Probabaly 1 of the reasons why some EXO members initially back out due to production issues. EXO members are so vocal about alteration. They know that their lives sound better than the post productions. And might also be the reason why EXO's episode has the most raw vocals in Killing Voice per music producers and vocal coaches, the production team had to heed.

NMIXX deserves so much more recognition

The unfortunate thing is the bm girls are very capable of singing live. I think the mcountdown performance or some music show performance, they did sing over their pre recorded vocals and while the pre-recorded vocals were much louder, I could tell that these girls were pretty good live singers. I hope they have actual vocal moments like bp so that we can hear their vocals in their full glory

I’ve seen MR removed edits of them that are literally just isolating the pre-recorded vocals 😅. And everyone in the comments are saying, “my faves are so good that people think they’re lip syncing when they’re live!” Which is just…false. Someone even said, “Wait until they have an encore and then you’ll see that they’ve been live.” But them having an amazing encore wouldn’t negate the fact that they lip synced during the stage?? We already know they’re good; Rami even sang a capella during some live show interviews. But fans are still pretending it’s slander to say they’re not live. I’ve just decided to ignore it now.

7:49 i dont think all recording videos are even 100% raw nowadays. in newjeans supershy recording videos you can hear some tiny pitch corrections here and there if you listen closely. not tryna bring newjeans down but its just reality nowadays.

That is true I'm just happy I could say confidently that new jeans is one of those groups that actually sounds pretty good live, at least when it comes to encore. They're the only people with JK I've heard people praise when it comes to hybe artists. I just wish that like hybe realize that they don't need to correct everything.

Dreamcatcher. Yes! That's why they're my only stan. Live and every member is a top shelf vocalist. I have no time for most Kpop because too much is fake. The agencies care most about what the girls look like and whether they can dance well. Those two things can't be easily fixed, but mediocre singing can be processed out. All this happened because Kpop has always been performed to recorded music which makes it simple to fix the vocals and just add them to the instrument tracks. Dreamcatcher use a live band whenever possible and you can't fake vocals with a live band.

Live shows are mix of live singing and lipsynch, they need to retake a lot of times in order to get all camera angles and it would take atleast 2-3 hrs for them to shoot an entire performance, so there were takes that they do live sing and other parts were they take only dance angles they lip synch. This does not apply only to baemon

Another source of unedited vocal clips is musicals!! It's limited because not many idols can get a role, and a lot of productions don't allow recording, but it's been getting easier. For one, a lot of idols are getting casted (granted some of them feels very much for popularity purpose), and musicals nowadays show the rehearsals or even just party performance for the production where the idols + the other actors casted for the same role song together.

To name a few, there's Eunji, Changsub, Kyuhyun, Suho and some others. The rehearsals especially will allow you to gauge how good the singer is because you'll be able to listen the difference in body, control, weight and just the power of actual musical theatre actors and you can compare how the idols do in comparison. Usually, they're on the weaker side, but it's still very much great to hear!

I watched Huening Kai’s Lee Mujin service and I think he still sounds himself, he definitely is versatile in voice. Same for other artists sounding good. Maybe sometimes a little too good, especially the artists that are known to struggle vocally singing great suddenly…

This is why I never watch “vocal coach reactions” or just reactions in general to live performances because the vocal coaches never ever critique them like ever and I think they know it’s edited or plain lip synced they just don’t acknowledge it idk why maybe they’re scared of fans lol

It's so baffling that people call obvious vocal cleaning live vocals. Kind of sad they can't distinguish what is actually live anymore.

As a fan of Mamamoo, BtoB and Dreamcatcher, I've heard enough live stages to know what their live voices sound like. Rappers are usually the biggest giveaways. I don't expect 100% live singing with dancing all the time(because, breathing), but these groups keep the balance well rounded most of the time

at this point idek if those survival shows are super edited lives or pre recorded. i usually assume it's the latter, but sometimes it's so badly made I wonder if it's really a live performance where they slapped crazy autotune on. either way it's so funny to see fans claim it's unedited live

Most survival shows are heavily edited. And when some people are made to sing without editing, they usually use that to evil edit, but they edit their faves to sound good. In Universe ticket it was pretty obvious the clips were all edited. But most of the girls that debuted can actually sing live. It just sucks that they edit things to sound perfect, even when they don't have to.

I just came across some people praising babymonster for their "amazing live vocals" on an MR removed version of their recent stages. I really needed this kind of vid ToT

People are praising them because they know BM members are capable of singing live. Ahyeon and Rami were singing in Knowing Brother, a variety show TV, where I highly doubt the crew were editing their singing like how music show did. They deserve the praise because they are indeed have amazing vocals and able to perform well live. And just because the video is edited, doesn't mean they don't sing live when the recording happen.

While concerts are often true live (maybe over a backing track), I'm pretty sure the concert DVD's are edited

Yes the unrealistic expextations of kpop fans are a big problem in kpop but they are indeed a product of the 💯 perfect image of the idols. Me personally love the little mistakes whrn they make little mistskes. For example I love jisoos shutdown live clip. You see her rlly sing and it was not that bad how everyone was bashing it to be. And can we talk about mamamoos raw vocals uff amazing.

I hope "fans" wont use this as an opportunity to hate on idols who have their vocals edited. The only way we can get more raw performances is if we stream it more in comparison to perfect vocals we expected when these idols are moving around.

I once really said in a babymonster subreddit that one of the live performances of Batter Up wasnt really live, and they HAAAAATED me. Like, it was so obvious, not only it was edited, it was clearly different takes (the voice and the visuals did not match)

The reason is that fans tend to make a competition out of everything, that's why they have to correct mistakes, otherwise haters would tear people up. As for myself, I don't mind a few weaknesses, esp together with dancing, but sometimes the venue conditions are also so bad that even the best sing off key and that's really painful to listen to. I'd rather have that corrected, when I know that my favs can sing in general I don't mind that. So it depends.

Hoped to see Dreamcatcher in live singing part, and got so proud seeing them included as they should !!!!!!

I know I don't really comment on your videos but I do enjoy your videos so much. Thank you so much for this video. It was veryyyy informative stating the facts on how live singing videos like the Dingo Killng voices and It's Live and other platform shows like those go about it and I did enjoy the actual "live singing compilation" because I do love and truly appreciate live vocals very much.

unfortunately even some "recording behind the scenes" are heavily edited. I'm surprised at the lack of the "It's Live" youtube channel in this video. People eat that up and basically all comments are "So StAbLe" "sounds just like the recording". I love "It's Live" and the "First take" tbh, I just know as a musician that it's all fake, unlike 95% of the public apparently.

There's only one Unedited Killing Voice video and it's the one dingo mistakingly posted. We can say it was a misshap, blame on it being the first ever killing voice that was made but... the truth it that if anyone wants to check it out, Mamamoo's raw killing voice is here on youtube. It was really funny (and confusing) when they privated and reuploaded in a span of like... 2h. Especially since the original video was already so good no one even questioned it.... The main changes are the leveling of the volumes between the mics and them pitching Moon's voice higher (HONESTLY WHY THE F* WOULD YOU DO THAT??? SHE SOUNDS SO MUCH BETTER IN THE RAW 😭😭😭😭😭) Anyways it's nice that we can compare the two videos and see the changes they made. Do I wish they would've done WAAAAY less? Yes. Do I love they fucked up and we got the raw, flaws and all??? 100% LET ME HEAR THAT WEAK ASS MIC CRUMBLE UNDER SOLAR'S VOICE, I WANNA HEAR MOONBYUL'S PASSION AND HER DEEP TONE, WHEEIN DOES NOT NEED TUNING, LET MY GIRL HWASA LIVE WHO CARES IF SHE'S SICK SHE STILL DELIVERS. Thank you!! So many fans don’t know what actually live vocals sound like and have such unrealistic expectations for what raw vocals sound like because of mixing and backing tracks/pre-recorded vocals! Even amazing singers get off-pitch sometimes, have cracks in their voices and that’s so natural!

EXO has tons of raw videos singing from their IG lives, bubble messages to just impromptu requests from fans and shows they've attended. Then there's the recording behind the scenes which only recently SM "finally" realised to release. I've heard 5 out of 9 them in separate concerts, one very recently with Baekhyun, though there are backing tracks it's quite and they don't lipsync if they missed to sing a certain line, they just let the backing track play but then they will sing again and then you can really tell it's them. They only use the backing tracks on choreographed songs but no backing track on slow songs. I was privileged to hear Baekhyun during his sound check and I had literal goosebumps from hearing how beautiful his live vocal is. Chen is next level great vocal definitely. EXO can definitely sing. If the company ask them to lip sync or edit too much, it's on them.

Even recording behind the scenes videos get edited. One idol (forgetting who atm) even called it out by saying that producers will only let the absolute best takes of the behind the scenes recording videos make it to the final clips and that they do correct them as well.

I agree that a lot of their "live" stages that people are talking about are edited. But the girls can sing. Just hear the clips they sang at the interviews. So just cause a group lip syncs sometimes, it doesn't mean they can't sing. Look at Aespa.

@@Lovelyisimba there were a time when i look for Chen's high note in tempo (i was obsessed back then), but most of the vids of the high notes were lipsynced but i did find one vid and it was glorious. but yeah they're great performers no doubt!

Encore was supposed to be a celebration with fans so it tends to be just relaxing or maybe chaotic but nowadays, it's an outlet of constant bashing and it's kinda sad. For backtrack, I think it's a must since people tend to look things perfectly and if that's a way to protect the artists then that's fine since you can still hear the actual voice anyway. And personally, I see things in an overall perspective so things like imperfections don't bother me and maybe because we have a lot of belter type of vocals in our country that's why I like kpop more because it's kinda different and I like singing+dancing more that belter singing.

12:13 i still don’t get why in most of their performances, the backtrack has to be 5x louder than their live vocals because this clip here proves how well they sing without it. Especially when at least once in all of their performances, their vocals (mostly Siyeon) overpowers the backtrack. LIKE LET THEM SING!!!

The only place to hear live vocals is some of 3rd gen and majority of 2nd gen. They were SINGINGGGGGG, the isssue is now they only care about dancing which is why these idols are either vocally challenged (not trained enough) or not allowed to sing live anymore even if they can sing.

Ugh, where to begin… I agree that expectations these days when it comes to live performances have become unrealistic, especially on music shows. I honestly have no problem with performers lip syncing the singles on those shows, especially during the first week of promotions, because they’re selling the version that people will listen to at home. There’s a difference between “live” and “raw.” The only way to guarantee a truly “raw”performance is to not use a microphone. Even live (and live to tape) shows have effects and adjustments of some kind on individual mics in order to enhance the sound. As much as I personally find myself cringing or laughing at a cracked or off note on a prerecorded show, I appreciate that it wasn’t covered in postproduction. This video does prove that even excellent singers aren’t perfect, and that for better or (perhaps) worse, the people behind them want their artists to come off as well as possible. You could actually say it’s their job.

Agree. As you said these people are confusing "Live" with "raw". I know that in the West, artists have been having their 'Live" performances corrected since the early 70's. This is not new nor is it unique to KPop.

5:15 Didn't wendy start the note a tad bit too low and actually corrected her pitch when she added vibrato? to my ears atleast, correct me if im wrong
