I just made a paragraph response to this exact question, didn't even see it, but tl;dr my answer is No, WoW is 20 years old, its combat is the way it is because of its age, the new plunderstorm is a perfect example that WoW has the capabilities to make telegraphed abilities to dodge so that the combat is actually enjoyable. Riot can do better.

Honestly, WOW with runeterra skin looks boring as hell, i think that riots mmo should look more like genshin impact gameplay, but with arcane visuals, and Wow / baldurs gate 3 / minecraft elements with freedom for taking decisions / good dialogs / rewarding players for exploring both literally and in decision making (like the combat interactions in BG3), and also feeling realistic, like if you were in a damn runeterra isekai experience, i know its really hard to make something like that, but yeah, let me be a darkin, have a dragon pet cus i stole someones egg, slap zed in the face and build a fishing store in mount targon

MMO's are an evil satanic skinner box type videogame, which provides very little content, while simultaneously stealing all your time that could be spent playing videogames with actual content. I hope this thing releases soon and fails. Evil MMO-fart developers hijacked Riot's dev team and stole all of league's resources that they could of used to make the MOBA better.

Well if someone can hold their ground against Tencent, it's most certainly Riot. They have proven several times that it was their vision of the games that gather players around, and that Tencent's vision was only destructive on the long term. Plus it's an MMO, there will be plenty enough of microtransactions and cosmetics for Tencent to just get the bag and shut up.

I disagree with you, and agree with Riot's choice. Greg probably was going to make a WotLK 2.0 or something that is only a little bit different than WotLK, and Riot doesn't want that. You can even get this message from Tryndamere's tweet. It looks like game was going to be a re-skin of WotLK which is they don't want it because both original and private WotLK servers are already played by so many, there is no need for a another WotLK. I also think WotLK's system wouldn't work on current era. WotLK was good at its own time. Current MMO genre is more different than the WotLK era. Now people doesn't want to spend hours just to create a group and do a dungeon. Even tho WotLK is the first exp. that introduced us to dungeon finder, Greg was probably going to make a little bir harder MMORPG than usual, which will probably scare casual players. At the end of the day Riot game is a company, and their main goal is earn money as much as you can, and from this perspective, probably Greg's MMORPG vision was not suitable for them.

While I understand the sentiment of not wanting to simply make a game thats too much like whats already on the market, it's not a good idea to try to reinvent the wheel. The biggest MMO's on the market right now got to where they are by taking the best parts of their competitors and adding their own flair to it

Makes sense, but i think riot has a pretty good track record with doing that. And I think its more exciting that such a large company is willing to take creative risks and trying to design something really special. If riot won't do it then who else? Maybe they have what it takes to revive the mmo genre!

reinvent the wheel is the best thing they can do. look at world of warcraft, dead and boring on arrival every expansion is the same. grind pointlessly until you get a burn out and quit for the rest of the expansion. no innovation at all.

Im still scared about the "Not wanting to make a modern WoW" WoW is literally the pinacle of what an MMO can be, the biggest problem of world of Warcraft is very old engine and old graphics, also the expansion system, but overall the mechanics, the gameplay and the world building is top tier up to this day, TWENTY YEAR LATER If they dont want this patch, i fear what the are planning for the game

I get the sense that there idea of "New" will be an action combat MMO that we have seen 1000 times and ends up failing harder than WoW clones overall. What else "new" can we even do. You level up, you hit mobs, you get items, you adventure. Thats an MMO, thats the genre, its like wanting to make a "New never before seen Fighting Game" then it comes out, and what do you know, its literally just a weeb fighting game as we all expected and have seen before. This sounds like PR talk for pivoting to some action combat system or mobile phone adapted concept.

This is kinda devastating to me. I've been longing for a new MMO and Riot felt like my only hope left for the coming years. It's not like other genres where you'll have a good new game at least every 1-2 years. A large portion of those that have been anticipating it from the start will probably not even be able to play or enjoy it fully because by then their life will be who knows where. And then there's the possibility that what they were planning was better than what they're trying to do now.

Developers: it has never been easier to develop games thanks to more optimized and easier to use engines and AI Riot: 3 years for a model and ability update for a single champion and 20 years for a new mmo. Take it or leave it

This is how I feel as a Metroid Fan. Metroid Prime 4 was announced in E3 2017, then development was completely overhauled in 2019, and we still haven't seen any gameplay or mention about it since then. I'm getting similar vibes with this.

I’m sorry but this is a bad call. Wow players have been itching to jump ship for sometime. But no other mmo has the polish and art direction like wow. I feel like a “runeterra wow” would be revolutionary.

Super excited now. Hearing the care and thought process of the development of the game shows that they arent just a big company trying to rush out a game for the bucks but actually allowing their creatives to put their live and passion into creating something truly special. Of course there are risks for the decision they are making, but u want your artists and devs to be able to be creative and take risks. Thats why so many indie games are so special

Ah, hell no. Now they try to re-invent the wheel. Sounds great on paper but judging by what Riot has done the past decade I wouldn't hold my breath on it actually being "amazing". Instead of trying to fuse working, well established, elements of different games together and put it into a world of Runeterra. It being similiar to WoW wouldn't be a bad thing if it plays well. But scrapping everything, adding another 2-3 years to the whole spectacle now? It's a bad move and I don't expect it working out so well in the end.

Spoiler alert: It wont be "New" thats PR talk. New World was supposed to be a "fresh" take on MMOs, and its literally the same thing. The team just wants an action combat MMO judging by Ghost Crawlers tweets, and he wanted a tab target/strategy heavy concept, so they are remaking the entire thing. wcyd.

You just got used to it overtime. Reimagining the wheel also doesnt half to mean making something so different that its a new genre. Franky, if it was just gonna be a league skinned wow mmo, i would not be interested in trying it out.

the part you mention about quantity of content(idk about the quality) its weird, because of course a mmo should have constant content aditions, if not it wouldn't last, ofc its important atracting new players, but if a experimented player has nothing to do, well, it will not play the game, so it will not invest in the game, but i guess we will need to wait even more, lets hope time its worth waiting for something of quality like with the serie Arcane

I think it's more about horizontal progression (building upon the existing content) as opposed to content resets, as in the case with new expansions.

The problem with wow is that most of the content becomes irrelevant the day a new patch comes out, so it has a lot of small things you can go for but a lot of it is not really evergreen, I got like 600 mounts and 30k achievement points but for most people that get in to see how much stuff they "missed on" is overwhelming, that's why a more simpler approach like a wow 2 reset would benefit it.

I think this is a good move from Riot, BUT it depends on what it will actually turn out to be. If it's an evolution of the genre then that's fine, if it's just an oversimplification of the genre then I think we got a problem. I really hope they're aiming for an evolution.

Honestly wouldn't have mind a WoW like game, feel like a lot of the issues I have with WoW rn could be fixed without re inventing the wheel. Either way lets hope it releases before 2030 :)

I think if they REALLY want to make a popular MMO that doesn't feel like something already on the market, they should make the game first person. So many MMORPGs feel so impersonal because no amount of work can replicate being in the first person perspective in regards to immersion. A perfect example of what first person does for an MMORPG is Destiny. Anybody who has played destiny knows that the best part of the game is either A: the cosmetics, or B: how cool and intense the game feels at its best. You are a blessed war machine running through out worlds, clearing them with advanced weaponry single handedly, or at most with 6 people. Imagine that in a more fantasy setting, being a berserker clearing out entire droves of noxian soldiers, or something of the like. Hell, it could play into some incredible dungeons as well. Imagine how terrifying it would be, if you got into a raid against Aatrox, and instead of trying to kill him, you're trying to survive long enough to escape. Or one where you are told to hold the line against endless noxian soldiers as a demacian troop? There are so many different experiences that are made so much better by being in the front row seat.

This is so sad, litterly all they need to do to have a banger of MMORPG that is very different from any MMORPG today is take the combat and movement from Battlerite, build an MMORPG onto that with Runeterra as its setting... Why can't they just see this is the way :c

I mean mmos do quite take fucking long especially when it's lore is already established and some areas needs to be filled with lore that is somehow connected or are just stand alones. And that is just story alone, knowing Riot they will suck at the balancing like always but they gotta make it a little bit more different than the ones before like Amazons mmo wich feels like dead by now since I've seen no news about it anymore they gotta work on something to make it like Lol and Valo in order to profit from it with skins and etc. in a way since that is a pretty huge project.

Honestly I do not understand why Riot is trying to create an MMO. The genre is already past it's heyday, has reached market saturation a long time ago and MMO's are possibly the most expensive games to develop and maintain of them all. And then there's also the risk that an MMO is going to split the League community in two because both MMO's and MOBA's are a huge timesink so players will have to split their time between them. There's just a way too high chance that this project is going to blow up in their face and maybe even take LoL down with it if it really goes spectularly wrong.

i think riot wants to take over the gaming industry as the go to company for casuals and be a big competitor in all major genres (at least when it comes to online gaming). valo tactical shooter, x2ko fighting games, league moba, legends of runeterra card game, and now mmo. i wouldnt be suprised if they are already working on a battle royale, rts, or arena like shooter like overwatch, or a rogue like online game like backpack battles. there is no proof to what im thinking, but with everything they do it seems like thats what they want.

I feel like the excuse of not wanting to just be WoW with Runeterra paint is just a bad excuse for scrapping that much work. I'm not particularly upset about the game taking longer over all, because I've resigned to the fact that I doubt we'll ever see the project come to life. But you're meaning to tell me that the design team started working on an MMO without confronting the number 1 problem MMO's have to jump over to be good? That's what gets me. I mean it's a fucking mmo, when you start out designing the game the first checkmark you have to cross off the list is making it fun, and the second checkmark is finding out how to separate it from WoW. Those are the two main criteria, and they have been in the MMO community long before Riot started working on this. It's not some weird secret ingredient to the recipe, it's not the weird herb combination, it's the fucking chicken.

I will not say they are in the right for delaying the project further. But blizzard does the exact opposite they just copy paste all their games with small differences for quick cash grabs. Diablo has no changed since Diablo 3. Wow Has been the same since frozen throne. Overwatch was monotone and boring and overwatch 2 is just a copy and paste with worse quality. Warzone 1 and 2 are practically the same game especially with the recent update where the game start is spam slide jump slide jump while aiming down sights with a gun with zero recoil. While riot on the other hand completely scrapped the MMO idea because they refuse to make a copy paste of an already outdated and saturated game. You must give them props for that.

After lore story isnt really selling their game anymore ofcourse they need to focus on gameplay. The fanbase already losing and aging, need to attract new fans/player

And since wow is actually very very unpopular nowadays with dwindling playercounts and newer MMOs like Warframe and Last Epoch presenting over 500 times the quality for much cheaper and with way more fun features its no surprise... Infact even less popular mmos have grown more than wow and with blizzard on the handle its no surprise... They failed to deliver for years now and if you dont agree with that I will just remind you Baldurs Gate is 60 bucks rn... Equal to 4 months of wow in price but has more quality that wow will ever see... I am a developer myself and working on a bigger non mmo project dropping later this year and in my eyes WoW is the pinnacle of failure for an MMO... It had the potential but it lost it with every update...

All I needed is play wow in runeterra universe with a active playerbase and better graphics but no, they prefer not to realese it than make a similar mmo of WoW. I hate them for it

I'm really disappointed. Not because that they are changing directions, but because now we have to wait even longer. I'd also like to know what their old vision was, vs what they are working towards now. Like when we all think of mmo's, we think of typical stuff like factions, classes, talents/specializations, weapon types, armor types, mounts and etc How much room is there really for innovation? How much more different can their vision be that they have to scrap everything? Are they making terrain that can be damaged? Real time weather? Can areas be taken over by players as if there is a real war? Like what exactly is it that they are doing that's SO unique and different that they need to scrap everything? It doesn't really make sense to me.

Im gonna have to reincarnate to play this game.

well am no longer interested in the mmo. a more modern take on wow would been pretty neat. but where would they go now, only other way i can see them doing something is a more action based, like black desert online or Guild wars 2. only thing i can see it going to, is never coming out. since rebooting a mmo is going to cost them way more then what it is worth.

Lets be 100% real here. The real reason why theyre scrapping it was that they felt like they couldnt make money off that game. It surely was perfect but the free to play model didnt work or smth.

They can't even fix their lol client... They are in no position to bring another bad game into the market.....

It has a pretty extensive world behind it that they've been working on for a decade now. It's not so much about League as it is Runeterra as a whole.

Runeterra has so many colossal monsters that a WoW clone with Runeterra paint sounded incredible to me. Raids, dungeons, etc. I’m still interested to see where this goes but if they take it down a SWTOR direction, I likely won’t be on board…

If I had to guess, with the canning of Riot Forge & both LoR and Valorant steadily declining & proving financial failures, the plan internally is to go back to focusing on the IP that pays the bills and to quietly can the MMO entirely. Which isn't entirely awful if it means Riot will get back to giving their players what they actually -want- ; though it is awful nonetheless.

Reading that second tweet, that's FANTASTIC news. Damn they had to reset all progress, that does suck, but what were they making before based on that tweet? Another point and click based MMO like FF14 and WoW? Why? That isn't fun whatsoever lol. I'm very sorry to the many that do enjoy WoW PvP, I have two friends that LOVE the shit out of WoW PvP and I've tried numerous times to play 3v3's with them, but I could never get into it because there just isn't anything to actively dodge. To feel fulfilling to me in a competitive environment, I need/want skill based abilities and autos, I want to proactively and reactively dodge and get out of the way of AoE's/skillshots. So to me this is amazing news to know that they want to bring a different approach and make sure that the MMO they create is a breath of fresh air in the genre. Idc if they made it top down like Lost Ark to keep that isometric league view that everyone is used to, or even better but more work is to make it 3rd person like New World with action combat. Either or but at least let me dodge things, let me use my big brain and strategize how to clutch this 1v3 rather than praying I press the right buttons in the right order at the right time.

@@vividelement1988 Fellas the ignorance isn't helping here. To keep an MMO alive it needs to have a valid endgame, what is endgame in an MMO? The raids and PvP. Using your min-maxxed build to play the pinnacle of PVE content and slapping people on the leaderboards in PvP content. Just because your passion is for the PvE doesn't mean there isn't an entire side of the community that also wants a working PvP that's balanced with rewards. My friends will buy a month of WoW just to play arenas, they could care less about PvE while I absolutely love raids, so in my eyes I would very much like a strong PvP focus alongside the PvE so that my friends actually give the game a chance.

Thank god it's not gonna be a Warcraft reskin, that game's combat system is one if the worst out of any MMO that's still standing to this day.

Hopefully before 4 13 2029.

i think these are good news.

I mean how are they going to make it groundbreaking or very different from WoW? Blizzard established or took the throne of a lot of genres with their games. (They are amazing at making cinematics too.) It is impossible to do that. Once something is done well by someone, others are just copy pastes with small changes. (Even though Blizzard is shit nowadays)

Honestly, this makes me MORE excited for it than any other news would. I've had ZERO interest in the MMO, since I figured it would be just what Tryndamere was describing: Yet another reskin of every other MMO on the market. The fact they are openly acknowledging that pitfall and that they are taking steps to avoid it and create something truly original? It's actually piqued my interest, now. Bravo, Rito.

Yeah in the unlikely case that there is actually any other formula of MMO that can be fun except WoW. I havent seen any. Theyre all shit. WoW was fun the second I started it. I have very fond memories of that. The feeling of the first copper I looted as an 7 year old boy. All other MMOs were just trash.

Well this is better than having a cheap copy of WoW. I genuinely don't mind waiting 5-6 years for a great game that takes place in runeterra.

It will be canceled in 3 years I reckon
