Back To School - Better Than The Box

Ойын-сауық

We can make it Better, Tastier, Less Expensive than the box with only 1 more pan and 5 more minutes. 2 out of 2 kids agree! They finished all of mine, and left the boxed version on the plate.

Kudos to Brad for doing this with his backpack still on! I hope you let him walk out the door with the rest of the homemade hamburger helper?

He was great! He didn't even know what he'd be eating until he walked in the door.

Sweet Curtis, you have missed the entire concept of Hamburger Helper. The concept is CONVENIENCE. Taste doesn't matter. Young people, single working moms and latch key kids want it easy and quick. No mess, quick clean up. I use to teach classes on convenience cooking verses cooking from scratch to young parents. Trying to demonstrate good quality, cheap meals against low quality, expensive bland boxed meals. I quickly discovered they were only interested in the quickest way to put something on the table. So I brought out the slow cooker. This concept was a huge success. I can only imagine what I could have taught if the instant pot had been around. Everyone would be scratch cooking! 😊. Very good video.

Maybe I'm just willing to go the extra foot and a half for flavors sake. I can't taste convenience...or maybe I can! Thanks Libby!

I get your point of view. But I have also been the working single mom just trying to make ends meet. I Never fed my kids hamburger helper. I remember it from when I was a kid at a neighbors house & though it was awful. Tired parent or not. A few more minutes in the kitchen for the satisfaction of feeding your kids AND yourself something that doesn't taste like a science lab or going to chemically poison your family slowly over a long period is worth the effort. I most definitely agree the insta-pot is a great tool for this younger generation. Ours sat on the stove top did the exact same thing & was called a pressure cooker. It double as a pop corn maker & deep-fryer as well.

I like the idea of you giving a few lessons on Dorm or young adult on a college budget cooking. Our Grand-daughter asked for an air fryer/ toaster oven for Christmas for her dorm. I dont want her to just eat pizza rolls, chicken nuggets & frozen taquitos from it though. Love what your doing here. I get some great ideas or reminded of some old favorites & often learn something new. THX

Thank you! It might be worth it to find her a vegetable air fryer cookbook. Or, if you don't think she'll read it, do your own searching and write a couple of recipes down for her on note cards or whatever format won't get lost in a dorm room. Who knows with these kids...if you create a google doc and share it with her, then she can't loose it!

@@SelfServingSkillet Ooo, Great Idea ! She will most definitely loose the book this stage in life. But she will definitely refer back to something on the computer she can save in a file. I do enjoy the random calls from her though, "Grann, how do you make that one stuff thats sooo good ...?"

This is an old trick of mine. Try evaporated milk. It adds a thickness and flavor to the dish. It adds a few cents to the budget but the left over can be used in your coffee. Good video. I laughed when I pictured you snatching Brad out of the lobby for an impromptu taste test.

Actually the serving size recommended on the hamburger helper box is correct. Who would want to serve their child any more of that cr@p? No doubt your version is way better because it is actually food but a little mushrooms and sour cream would help. 🤪 Bring back Brad. Nice to get someone else reviewing your concoctions.

The distinction between ground chuck and ground sirloin becomes a little unnecessary when you consider that most college students are just going to buy the tube of 'ground beef' from Kroger for anything that requires ground beef.
