I prefer the Hornby one also, I have a DB Schenker one from Hornby. Got it brand new for 42 quid from Hatton's, I have done a good job of detailing it with a PH Designs Class 90 detailing it. Furthermore I've even managed to 3D print better valances (for both variants of the Class 90) and also managed to have a new compressor unit 3D printed. I 3D printed a BW-HS pantograph as well, it has to be glued in position but I am fine with that, my pantograph looks more accurate than Bachmann's unrealistic second lower arm version. I toped it all off by adding more weight and a detailed cab.

Certainly is a lovely model. The ability to put the pantograph up and down does command prestige. Despite being considered a bit of a gimmick by some being able to raise and lower the pantograph with servo motors would actually not be a bad idea for Hornby's 800 class. Given that in real life it's the sort of train you'd expect to see switching modes. That would be a fantastic feature at an exhibition if the modeller wanted to show the train swapping between modes I.E Diesel if a particular part was non-electrified.

Great review. Regarding sound, Legoman Biffo already has a sound decoder for this model in the shape of the Loksound 5 decoder. I spoke to him yesterday at DEMU Showcase It was nice to meet you yesterday! Hopefully I 'infected' you with the 'modification bug' I was talking about. A great start would be renumbering the 2nd Powerhaul loco you want to buy? Alternatively, I'd be happy to repaint one into the older version of freightliner (like the 66/5's were built in) for you.

  • @TheRip72

Nice review. Regarding the decoder, the lights are also more switchable. Being able to select cab on/off, rear on/off & night/day requires more functions. Add the pantograph & I believe you need more than the standard 4 provided by most entry-level decoders.

Excellent video very interesting. The windscreen wipers not being present is something I noticed first as the "face" of a loco is really important. Well I’ve just watched that review for the umpteenth time, as I live alongside the WCML I see 90s most weeks doing there thing. I wasn’t planning on ever modelling anything remotely electric on my new layout, this has changed since Bachmann have finally released this loco. I’ve just taken delivery of a Powerhaul 90. It’s a stunner and probably my favourite, so now I’ve got to start planning which type of overhead cables to install. Can I ask you Richard which manufacturers have you used - Peco or Dapol? Great review as ever, looking forward to seeing more of the 90 running around New Junction👍 Cheers John B

A great video, Richard. Very thorough. I think, as an outsider, the Freightliner livery is the most stunning of the three- and I am passenger trains oriented. As I watch the thousands of UK OO modeler videos, I am intrigued at the way chipsets and functions are done there. With the German and continental companies, this stuff has been done for years and synced really well (rising pantographs, fully functional, with sound and more). I am seeing Digital American trains, but do not know whether they are more like the UK (my belief) or more like continental Europe. I guess I do not understand why the differences in how it is done. Anyhow, I've blabbered enough only to say again, great video!

Purchased one of these some months ago , ran really well until a small shunt which broke the bogie mounting point where it is attached to the chassis ,this in turn snapped the power wires where they attach the pick up points . Unfortunately Bachmann instructions only tell you how to access the chip compartment on top off the engine , also there is no list of spares that can be purchased for this model , so will have to contact service dept for availability of replacement bogie .Am pleased with engine though .

Hi Richard, Great review. I liked the Freightliner version the most too. It is going on to my wanted list. It is strange that Bachmann haven’t worked in conjunction with at least one, but possibly more, of the decoder manufacturers to ensure both sounds and the pantograph for the overhead catenary works properly. If you build the model with a speaker already installed, and a working pantograph, why would you not tell the decoder manufacturers what they need to know to enable that? Are you going to install the (faux) overhead catenary wire system on the layout? Electric trains look a bit odd with a pantograph but no overhead lines. I hope you’re feeling a lot better after this video too. You sounded full of cold! Jim

i like the 3 new Bachmann class 90s and when my dad wenr to put a V5 legoman biffo sound decoder in it, first time it worked abit and then after that, it made a bzzt sound, so I'm guessing the sound chip either burnt out or popped. it doesn't work on my class 90 now.

Bachmann did a great job on that pantograph of which Hornby could have learned something with their similar panto on their InterCity Swallow liveried Class 87. My Br Blue 87 has a different metal crossover panto which has to be moved by hand but is a neat trouble free panto, you can see that 87 on my channel. I just subscribed ……….. Cheers, Jan

18:33 `had it`s delays` 5 years wait is nothing, you've got off lightly in fact. I have been waiting since February 2011 for the Bachmann Warflat wagon (38-726) I've got 12 on pre - order, latest update from Bachmann is they have been delayed further until mid 2021, and every year of delay the price goes up. A elderly fellow modeller friend of mine had 5 on pre - order but sadly died in November 2017 whilst still waiting for them. Don`t forget these wagons were announced 3 years before the class 90! I`m thinking of cancelling the pre-order and have done with it, it`s beyond a joke now.

They shall as £152 id too much and it should only be £120 to £130. On their website they say that they have found some more in their warehouse but this is not true. It just a ploy.
