B747-8 engine reverse thrust operation for GEnx

How do you do everyone? Time for a reminder snippets after so many queries from a number of you.So what is actually happening when an engine on the B747 translates into reverse thrust after landing? The engine does NOT start turning in a reverse direction. The THRUST is what is redirected forward by closing off the exhaust by use of blocker doors. The engine cowling then moves rearward and opens up ‘cascade’ vanes that direct the air in opposite direction to direction of travel- causing resistance. This helps slow down the aircraft and is termed ‘reverse thrust’. There you have it- ‘Chi Di Gin! Later!✈️✈️✈️✈️

Thanks Captain , it was cool to see how the doors closed inside the engine while in reverse. Later

I didn't know about blocker doors. I'm learning something new everyday although in the interest of public safety and my parents sanity I could never become a pilot. I'm too experimental to the detriment of safety. I want to takeoff at full power and apply reverse thrust for 2 seconds on rotation to see what happens.

Captain Obet! I have a question. Before your application to Cathay, have you ever been to college/university? If not, can you ask why a degree is not mandatory for becoming a pilot? Thanks!

It's not mandatory but some airlines can ask for it if there are too many jobless pilots in the market

How many thrust settings are available in reverse? Idle and the next higher level, maybe climb thrust??

What do you mean??? Reverse thrust is one single operation! Why would u reverse thrust during takeoff?

There are different levels ie. TO, CLIMB, CRUISE and there are different levels of those, 1 and 2. The first click gets the doors open and idle thrust, the final click is a higher thrust setting so the question is, what reference thrust does it activate

@@markcardwellyou are not saying anything about reverse thrust. This is about reverse thrust. Not thrust.

The engines generate different levels of thrust for different phases of flight for economic reasons. The engines don't care how that thrust is used, it's a metered amount of thrust

Only idle and high reverse thrust. Reverse thrust is only used during landing and rejected takeoff . So there is no climb reverse thrust . And there is no throttle detents on reverse thrust . It has to be set manually by pulling it
