I'm so glad you immediately recognized the importance of Zuko and Iroh cutting off their hair. Because the association of hair and honor in the fire nation is never really explained in the series. No hair bun means you are honorless, a disgrace and you lost your rank in high society. If you wanna understand the details you gotta read the Avatar Kyoshi novels. Always keep Japanese culture and customs in mind when you see fire nation stuff. And yes, the power Aang possesses in the Avatar state is insane. It really can't be overstated.

@@LMaximus904 when every character is complicated, it conflates the story and takes away attention from the characters the storytellers want the audience to focus on. Azula is perfect in the role she has. She is manipulative, perfectionist, ruthless, and doesn't make mistakes. That, and the way she affects Zuko (and how different she is from him) are what make Azula interesting. Her own backstory in book 3 is cool to get, but it's not as interesting as everything else about her imo

Ah, yes. The introduction of everyone’s favorite teenage villainess. Lots of stuff I could say here, but Azula is quite a complicated character, and I don’t want to imply anything. Suffice to say I look forward to seeing your perception of her evolve going forward Also yeah, the cutting off the top knot/ponytail thing is classic Japanese symbolism for new beginnings. You picked up on that pretty much off jump street. It’s the beginning of a new life for Zuko and Iroh, can’t wait to see where they go from here. Episode 7 can’t come fast enough…

So for the Fire Nation a top knot is a symbol of honor and it's like a sacred feature for them. That's why Zuko is bald except for the ponytail. He shaved because of the shame but he kept the ponytail for this very reason. Them cutting it off is like abadoning their identity. In order to hide and in order to redeem themselves from the bloody past their kind has.

After rewatching the series with you, I realized of a possible plot hole that I didn't before. Right after Iroh turns against the fire soldiers and Zuko loses Aang, we see Ozai telling Azula Iroh is a traitor and Zuko a failure in the following scene. I mean, is it quite some time supposed to have passed already? If not, how did Ozai get the memo so quickly? I don't recall them having smartphones.

i think an explanation comes from the fact that the gap between 1x20 and 2x1 is 3 weeks. considering azula doesn't actually find zuko and iroh until after that 3 week period, that scene could've happened anywhere in between. atla has a habit of sneaking huge timeskips past you (ex. 2x15 --> 2x16)

@@kaijingarou6526 they dont really happen one after the other... i mean ozai sending azula out is the very last scene of 1x20. all the action is done at that point. it could very easily be inferred that azula's scene happens a week or two after the siege of the north. its not really a plot hole imo
