For the S10, in a CBRN environment, you wouldn't put the mask on like that unless you want to risk filling your face with contaminants. You hook the mask over the bottom of your chin and bring it up and over your face.

I bet you didnt know that the bayonet system was used on gas masks as early as WW1! With one of the earliest models that was used it being the heeres sauerstoff schutzapparat. You see i bought a German GM16 gas mask a while ago and i noticed that it has this weird plate inside the mask on top of where the filter loads into the mask. I wasnt sure what it was so i ended up getting in contact with a professional collector who still had no clue what it was. He ended up asking a friend who is big into his WW1 German antigas equipment and he said it looks alot like a bayonet locking system but hes never seen anything like it before. Turns out it was the plate used to connect to the HSS meaning i managed to pick up an incredibly rare gas mask as there is only one other example known in a museum in Belgium.

Its works in conjunction with the screw thread, as its a hose connection we both know they can come loose so i think it was to keep the hose fixed into the mask as this was meant for highly toxic gas areas where the standard filter would fail.

I like how the UK had like really good gear that was cheap, the MK7 and the S10 but then changed them out for more pricey and less affective gear for no rational reason

Just curious, what are your thoughts on the SGE 400/3. and the associated models 150, 400, and 400/3 BB? From what I've heard, they were turned down by the Italian military, but are still good masks. However, all by the BB model use silicon instead of butyl rubber, thus not super great against some CRBNE (NBC) environments. However, the silicon can take more heat before melting. The MSA MCU-2p has the same issure, and makes up for it with a hood and the MSA Millennium's materials. Anyway, just interested in your thoughts about it for general and emergency use (eg: escape from a high rise in a fire). Cheers!

Never used them, they're probably fine masks, but it really depends how much you are paying, considering for £/$30-100 you can get pretty decent surplus masks, does it have any features that would make it better for example.

Please could you do a video listing most comfortable gas masks down to the least comfortable? I would find it very interesting if you did. Keep up the great work

The 40mm intakes are under the GSR clips, you have to take them out with pliers, so it's not a convenient thing.

That won't be any use to you because the S10 doesn't have a conventional size chart online, S10s were meant to be fitted by doing a proper respirator fit check and then a mask of the correct size was issued to the soldier, generally bigger sizes were issued than needed and then the straps were tightened to make a good fit, so I'll give you the same advice, if you have a normal sized head get a size 1 or 2 (large or medium) then tighten the straps. Most of the S10 measurement is done on jaw width supposedly, not height and width of the head. If you google "Gas mask sizing chart" you will find some that show you how to measure your jaw and then the general respective sizes for most gas masks. Remember with the S10, size 1 is large and 4 is small.

The GSR doesn't really improve on anything though.

I have checked across most of KZread and I find it funny how people always forget that the GSR has a secondary filter with its inner mask in the bottom of the mask, which is why it's so heavy, the whole thing isn't designed so much for practicality but safety without compromise, as double filters extend service life and allows filters being exchanged in a hazardous environment when you can't avoid one but also has that inner mask which adds to the seal and that filter improves protection in particular if either there is a failure of seal or whilst some dangerous material sits on the replacement filters as you move them into position, I'm not aware as to what the rating is for that internal filter but at least it would give a fighting chance in the event of a failure around the eyepiece or anything else, just a point I'd like to raise although have to admit good video and you've gained a subscriber

That's not a filter, it's designed to collect moisture and allow you to exhale that moisture better, it was added when the GSR had massive teething problems during the trails of the mask, the sweat and condensation inside the mask would block the filter ports. If it was an internal filter it would have to contain charcoal, it doesn't, I've since pulled it out of my mask.

Hmm your correct it does, would be almost totally useless though as once the mask is breached you are dead in a CBRN environment. Scott doesn't even exist as a company anymore anyway, they were swallowed up by 3M so who knows what's going to happen with the British military actually getting replacement parts and masks being serviced etc. If you haven't read this I'd highly advise it. publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200607/cmselect/cmdfence/56/56we07.htm

As I've said multiple times on here, no, as you can easily find picture guides online, I have no interest in using the GSR for actual use and want to keep it as standard configuration, I don't know if it clips back together after doing it either so I don't really want to do it as despite the GSR being awful I don't want to damage a £100 mask.

No need to be rude. The bayonet clips do go back on, as I've been in touch with an old Army friend who has done it. As for "multiple times", I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned elsewhere...

i hope they still make and sell S10 because they seem to be very simple and easy for people use

The S10 is out of production but the successor the CT12/FM12 is still in production.

The GSR mask has a capabilitie to accept 40mm filters,the tear drop filter hardware is on the mask at all times but if you break or bend the two little tabs and unscrew the existing filter attachment,you will find a 40mm attachment under it.i will post a video soon to show everyone.so you can use your normal teardrop filter or 40mm with your GSR mask

Yeah apparently not all GSR masks have that feature but most of them do, mine has the removable tabs, never bothered doing it myself as I have plenty of actual 40mm masks I can use as well as spare bayonet filters for the GSR.

How do you get to the 40mm threads in the GSR?

@@tummywubs5071 So I'm a bit late lol, but yes I think the M50 or C50 might be my favorite mask ever made. The filters are easy to replace while worn, you get a good field of view, the drinking tube moves in and out of place, and it fits comfortably well.

The M 50 is great. I own one for each family member. Best you can get in my humble opinion. People say they are too expensive? I say how expensive will it seem when you’re choking with your $10 mask?😁

If you want a quality mask look to the Czech m10m mask it was mass produced so it’s super cheap but has good build quality. The only issue is the filters are expensive

I like both the gsr and S10 as both of them are good masks I would trust my life with both if they weren't breached in short the gsr isn't bad and the S10 isn't bad good video though as you know your stuff and are level headed unlike others who would say oh the S10 is older and the gsr looks cooler so it's better. They are both good masks as you explain. Well done

Britain had no intention of going to a cheek filter mask though, the options as I mentioned in the video were sticking with the S10, a good mask, upgrading to the FM12, a better mask, upgrading to the C50 another good mask, or upgrading to the M50, a mask with many of the GSRs flaws. They decided to go with the GSR which was the worst option.

You should do more gas mask comparisons

Do you have a Avon M50 gas mask. I would say it is a really good mask because it is REALLY similar to the GSR mainly because when you take the first off the mask seals itself so you don't have to hold your breath, but the visor on the M50 has a built in visor and the a removable protective visor on the outside

Well, the FM12 does beat the S10. But yeah, replace a dependable, robust and light weight mask with a heavy mask that offers no real advantages.

All filters as long as they have a P3 rating are equal, filters and masks only block alpha radiation and some beta radiation, unless you are in a bunker, gamma will kill you regardless.

Could it be a situation similar to when the U.K were going to issue out the EM - 2 as their standard rifle but were stopped by the U.S stating that NATO members need at least a 7.62 so all that potential in development was gone.

The SLR was a very good rifle though, it's more like switching from the SLR to the L85, or if you want to use your example not reviving the EM-2 rather than going to the L85.

I'm pretty sure I answered you, it's for laser designating I believe, you can see the laser with the filter on the mask but it's invisible to the naked eye.

I think the Bulgarian gas mask is a mix of the UK and German gas mask and the civilian looks like the Israelis mask.

GSR best respirator, but S10 the best battlefield respirator.

I think if GSR had dual 40mm filter ports with a blanking plug and if it was better quality, it would be a really nice mask. Well, it would be an FRR or an Avon made GSR.

The S10 and M40, like the S6 and the M9 were great. It's a massive shame the FM12 didn't catch on as a military mask. Whilst the newer GSR is an interesting piece, as is the M50, both seem to be a lot heavier and cost a lot more and aren't quite as versatile as the refined 12 series' base. Especially since the 10 series was such an iconic image that the 12 kept. It's interesting the SAS haven't adopted (Atleast to my knowledge) the GSR and still use the CT12. Probably due to weight, the size difference and the lack of easily adaptable lense outserts. Funny you should post this kind of video today, since my FM12 arrived today as well. I can see why it's you like it so much. The thing is so light and easy to handle. If you took all the good things from the M40 and plonked it into all the good things about the S10 out comes the FM12.

The FM12 has nothing to do with the M40 though, it's simply an updated S10. The M40 didn't enter US service properly (ignoring the XM40) until the 1990s, the S10 had been around since the early 1980s, and the FM12 is simply a refined S10.

True, but in regards to the bulk and the head harness. Since the M40 is quite a lightweight and close fitting to the face mask. If you take those aspects from the M40 of course. I don't know if Avon took any notes from other masks whilst working on the FM12 but I imagine they looked at what worked on newer masks and applied them to make the FM12. Speaking of, would it, had it been used a mainstay military mask been named the S12?

When Avon Rubber made the S6 and S10, for example, they were made under contract for the British armed forces, the FM12 was a mask they made for separate sale that they tried to get the British armed forces to buy. The S10, for example, was guaranteed to be chosen, the FM12 wasn't part of that.

You would rate the drinking tube as a feature if like me you have worn one for 24hrs straight...... silly comment to make

oh well now i know that why not just use the one on the left for the shooting then?? mind you i was a better shot using the old 1 lol
