Australians set to protest tap and go on ‘Draw Out Some Cash Day’

A social media campaign is encouraging Australians to protest card payments by partaking in ‘Draw Out Some Cash Day’.
The protest is set to occur on April 2.
“People are being encouraged to go to an ATM or to a bank,” Sky News host Caleb Bond said.
“They’re encouraging people to take out at least $20 and go and spend it in a local business.
“May I say on behalf of all of us - hear hear.”

Look what happened in Norway. After going cashless, they had to legislate for cash to be legal tender again. Cash in my hand is not in Albanese's hand. Cash is tangible. That's right. I remember back to 1978 working at the Bank of New South Wales and they were about to commence the debit card payment system. They only had a couple of merchants to begin with ( Food Plus and I forgot the other), The bank hierarchy were so excited at how much they would save, spruiking to the staff about the opportunity cost of $millions laying idle in bank strong rooms and night safes, Time to be saved in tellers counting $millions daily and the supervision required, the transportation and security costs, cash payrolls at businesses (armoured cars), insurance premiums. No mention of all the job losses to come. 46 years later, all the banks wishes came true, and more. Having saved $ billions in operating costs and done away with tens of thousands of jobs. Banks and corporate greed knows no bounds. Fees was the Banks next frontier. The mantra became "user pays" to justify placing fees onto customers for services that used to be absorbed as the cost of doing business. Account keeping fees, electronic transaction fees, excess transaction fees, stop paying interest on transaction accounts, merchant fees etc etc etc. The ladder climbing individuals working for these organisations will always be willing to come up with new schemes to squeeze more out of the customers, regardless of being reasonable, fair, decent part of the community. An old movie "The Corporation" gives good insight into how the dark side of individuals feeds this greed unchecked. Transacting electronically has a justifiable place in the payments system. But it should not be the only option. Cash and other types of payments should not be penalised by fees. It's all part of the cost of doing business.

I bought a few items at a garage sale for $50. I gave him a $50 note. The seller bought some new shoes with that $50 note. The shoe shop owner used the $50 note to buy some groceries. The grocer used the same note to buy a crate of watermelons from a local farmer. The farmer bought $50 worth of fuel for his tractor. The fuel seller bought his children some second-hand school uniforms with the $50. The mother who sold the second-hand uniforms put an extra $50 worth of food on the table for her children, using the $50 note. This continued for a multitude of transactions and every time the $50 was still worth the original $50. Now, using a card, the seller only received $49.90. The next seller only received $49.80. The next only received $49.70 ... this process continued until the whole $50 card payment was swallowed up in bank fees and resulted in $00.00, zero, zilch, nothing, nowt. No wonder banks want to remove cash from society.

Banks are not the only ones banning cash. I have stayed at hotels that don't accept cash (didn't know until checkout time). I have shopped at retailers that don't accept cash, well not really shopped since I declined my purchase and walked out. I even saw one cafe (can't remember where) that didn't accept cash, then had the audacity to charge a surcharge on the use of card payments. They didn't get my money either.

Cash and checks: secured storage space and transport to the bank, or an old safe and a zipper bag with a bank logo that is free from the bank in most cases. For large retail establishments they may prefer to hire a security company with an armored car for a standard low monthly fee. Gift cards: minor infrastructure, internally handled and cash up front.... nice option, especially when people lose the card. Credit/Debit: MASSIVE infrastructure, HUGE yearly payment for the privilege of using the system and a MAJOR surcharge on all purchases............ That's interesting. When l relocated to regional Australia two years ago, I worried about not having access to two of my favourite things; food courts and two dollar shops. Then a year ago T E M U launched in Australia. I am very happy with it. It's the ultimate two dollar shop online and I don't need the local K. Mart either. The staff at my local Commonwealth Bank who are awful, the worst branch of this bank I have ever known and I have been a Comm Bank customer since 1992, tried to put me off making online purchases with this company by making up stories about how it's a scam. Everywhere else I shop, including all bills, I pay in cash.

I've read one review about TEMU aboutt the goods being rubbish, so might try it now, thanks for the info. As long as you have good anti-virus software, and 13 numbered passwords with letters etc in passwords (can take a computer up a long time to decode I believe) hopefully you should be a bit safer. I've been with that bank, with my little tin money box for decades, although in the past I have yelled especially when I was told I had to agree when depositing my money without first knowing the interest rate. I find some of the local coffee shops where I live, serve good coffee as well as homemade cakes. Win, win, and thanks for the reply.@@kyliemoronogue

So how does the old people deal with a cashless society. My farther 77 years old and don't even know how to turn on a computer or use a mobile phone to do internet banking. More than half of the old age people wouldn't know how to use a bank app online to keep tabs on how much they have. Most of them use bank book. And withdrawal cash to pay for things. They will line up at the post office to pay their bills. To transfer money into some eles bank account to buy things from Facebook ect or of a friend. It will be a security risk to give out your bank account to someone who maybe a hacker.

Being in my 70's, and with many friends and acquaintances of similar age, I query your maths. I realise there must be a few out there, but for me personally, the only people I know, who don't have a mobile phone are two people in their 90's.

After seeing what government (Canada is likely as bad as Australia) has done over the last 4 years, I have gone to cash for almost all in-person transactions. Interestingly, in many places like almost all of the developing world, but even in places like Japan, Switzerland and Germany, cash is still king!

Tried to pay my car registration (NSW) last week, BIG surprise ! No BPAY ! details. If you study the form with an eye glass you will find a land line number to call and they send you a BPAY reference number to your mobile and, after 3 attempts ....IT DOES NOT WORK which means back on the telephone for a 15 minutes on nonsense with an unhelpful helper. However, you can pay by credit card at a cost $3.80 to $11.00 depending on your card compared to BPAY where there is no card charge. TOTALLY UNFAIR-OUR GOVERNMENT.

If you're only taking out $20 on this day just to join in a popular movement, you're part of the problem. If you're serious about keeping cash alive, you will make the effort to withdraw cash every week and use it everywhere. You will stand in line waiting for service or for one of the few self serve checkouts that accepts cash, rather than choosing to pay by card to make your life easier.
