Norway to legislate the right for consumers to use cash in a bid to ‘protect’ economy
Sky News host James Macpherson says the Norwegian government is looking to “protect” their economy in a decision to legislate the right for consumers in the country to pay with cash.
“Something we often talk about on The Late Debate and that is the dangers of a cashless society,” he said.
“Though it does not seem many Australian politicians are concerned.
“Others, however, are starting to take note, the Norwegian government is passing legislation to guarantee the rights of consumers to use cash when buying goods and services.
“What is interesting about that, Norway has one of the highest uptakes of digital use, a recent survey found only three per cent of Norwegians had used cash in their last purchase at a physical store.”

All you people pulling out your card at the grocery stores and gas stations are to blame. If more people use cash exclusively, we wouldn't have this problem.

I often make the decision to use cash for a transaction simply because I have an EFTPOS machine shoved in my face immediately. Similarly with receipts, if I'm not asked then I definitely want one.
How crazy is it that you have to fight for the right to use cash? Your own country's money???? This is insane.

That would be a correct comment if a country actually printed its own money, conspidering that most, if not all, country's across the planet don't print their own money, it's printed by the IMF, which is why the entire planet has an insane debt that it can not nor never will repay, because the IMF only ever prints enough money for capital and never prints enough for interest. Until politicians grow a pair and tell the IMF to take a hike, country's will always forever be in a cycle of perpetual debt.

Or right to be able to travel freely, buy the food that you want, drive the car that you want, socialize with the people that you want, live where you want… it’s a long list of things that people take for granted that will be gently and consensually removed in the name of convenience, then more strongly and in the name of the public good, then forcibly whether by coercive measures or force of arms, with no particular justification. People need to choose at what point they want to start fighting for it and how hard they are willing to fight or if they want to move somewhere with fewer restrictions.
A cashless society is a draconian one where governments can control who can and who can't buy food.
Another thing with cash is that you actually pay the price on the docket. I’ve gone back to using it for small purchases because I’m tired of seeing a $4.50 purchase become $4.67 or $4.92 or whatever price the shop decides should be added on. The ATO doesn’t want people to revert to cash because they want to track income.
Needs to happen in Canada also , we have a Mad man running Canada today , the country is turning into a chit hole .

Just need to look at what happened in Canada when truckies, electronic bank accounts, were frozen by the government in order to break the truckie convoys.
Not too long ago in Canada we had the government freezing accounts which was deemed illegal afterwards, which won’t stop them from doing it again. We also had a massive internet outage that stopped digital transactions for a day or more, I don’t recall as I was still using cash so I didn’t care but many were clamouring about not being able to buy necessities. The next step would be the government deciding where you can spend your “money”. If they push forward with 15 minute cities I would fully expect that your digital currency may not work if you are outside of your district or things may have a non-district purchase surcharge tacked on and your credit score will lower until you won’t be able to buy anything other than predetermined staples and only in your district.
This is SOooo important, every Australian should contact their senator and tell them to ask for this. If not CBDC will own us all
Fight cashless society by all means
There is an even greater worry when banks are emerging as a new level of control over our lives, almost another level of government
Bring back cash , especially gold and silver backed currency.
We saw a taste of the dangers during the Optus outage. From people who couldn’t make phone calls, to businesses who couldn’t trade. Everyone was impacted!
It stinks, people have to accept "legal tender" in payment for goods and services, it's the law. We went shopping yesterday and visited Coles for nothing more than a few packs of sausages only to find there were people lined up halfway across the store to use the only checkout that was open! Heaps of space at the card only self checkouts! We decided that we didn't want to wait in line for an hour so we got one of the staff to help us put our purchases through the machine BUT we were totally ticked off with being forced to use a damned machine when we had cash in our pockets. WAKE UP COLES! Keep this up and you can shove your stores.
A lesson for Australia!!! Unfortunately, too many are addicted to their mobile phone!!!!

Start using cash more in order to keep it more relevant. When people themselves use/prefer credit cards for every transaction then that's the problem
Fantastic. Now Australia.
With cash, its easier to see just how much you have in a real perspective. You either see it or you don't. Theres no speculation as to how much, just use your eyes.
Central bank digital currency is very scary. We all need to fight to keep cash alive.
Not just legislation, it needs to be enshrined in the constitution or the next government could remove it.

Edit: and if people think they'll allow you to transfer any money to digital currency, think again, they've been refusing to process transfers now!!!!
The less cash used the more control by the government and the banks

We have numbers! If only the blind world open their eyes!
I would have never expected that from Norway. I would have thought they'd be one of the first to dump cash for a digital currency.
our goverment want rid of cash so when the system fails your forced to depened on the goverment
How can you legalise something that is already legal tender 🤣👊
Consumer rights to use cash is already legislated, it is legal tender & needs to be retained. Our shopping centre was not able to trade three times last year due to bank system failures. The entire shopping centre could not serve customers without cash. I had cash & could shop. USE CASH, stop giving banks an extra $9 billion a year, that's what it's costing consumer to use plastic cards.
Cash is King!
That moment someone recognised the difference between resilience and efficiency.
Hooray for them!!
During Covid the local supermarket stopped handing out coins as part of your change at the cash register. The reason being that there was a "coin shortage". You got in-store credit instead. Apparently the dreaded coin shortage was been resolved.
Yes, it's all about control. Here in Canada when we had the trucker's convoy protest (which by the way was a legal & peaceful protest) the Canadian government froze the bank accounts of the protesting truckers.
It's all about being controlled.

With anticipated power shortages and outages in the coming EV world anticipate lng periods where you are unable to buy anything. It's bad enough already when they can't even open a till during an outage.
What i dont get os why we have to pay addtional fees to withdraw cash and now also have to pay extra charges for paying by card??
When it comes to economics and what is good financial management, Norway is simply light years ahead of the bozos that "run" bozo Australia. To get a perspective, Norway's population is just over 5 million ( that's less than Queensland's 5.4 mill !! ) and their sovereign wealth fund ( used for the benefit of its citizens) is the BIGGEST in the world worth $USD 1.5 Trillion, compared to Australia (27 mill) which ranks 9th with about $USD 360 billion. And this is because Norway has consistently managed its natural resources, its economy and its investments FOR THE BENEFIT of its country. This issue of cash illustrates the point. A cashless system benefits ONLY the banks which take a clip of EVERY transaction (and also the government in tax collection) and also the ever increasing level of scammers. It does NOT cost the finance system 1% or more of transaction value to cover the cost of "providing a cashless" system with cards etc. Given the literally billions of transactions that take place, the unit cost of each is literally nothing. However, the government and finance industry know its a forced captive market and the participants are FORCED to pay whatever they say, whereas cash is cash. Banks ( and gov) DONT get a clip with EVERY transaction. Cashless is convenient, but they have made it so. Speed of transaction is one of the "advantages" and the scammers bank on that literally.
Did I feel sorry for cafés that over covid made rules of “No Cash” when Optus went down… twice, or storms took out everything over the Christmas period last year for days in my area? No! I hope the owners enjoyed the compulsory day off and apologised to their staff. Vote with your feet people. I check my change and find coin treasures plus I can budget easier since the Govt printed huge amounts of cash and made mine so worthless at the supermarket.
During our recent visit to Norway, we were forced to use a credit card, showing us a posting saying no cash accepted.
The value of cash is maintained from one transaction to the next Banks take a clip off every digital transaction so after 50 dollars has been used in a chain of trades, the original value is gradually whittled away into bank charges. Banks win all the way while they close down jobs in banks
This was patently obvious a few months back. You would have thought the penny would have dropped then with legislators. Norway are also a smart country. They keep 40% of their oil and gas royalties, unlike Australia which gives the stuff away for free.
Bravo!
Yes! That needs to happen here in Australia! Well done Norway.

A local auto parts supplier focuses on parts for cars that haven't been made for over 40 years. 99.9% of his business is online mail order. For locals who don't want to wait a couple of days for delivery, they allow local pickup. In the past they would accept payment at pickup. After a while they realized that the small amount of cash they got was cumbersome to deal with, so they went to no cash accepted.
It's illegal not to take cash in Australia. Bob told us so.😊❤❤
Pauline Hanson and Senator Robert’s do suggest cash.
After natural disasters which there are numerous every year sometimes the only option is to buy groceries, beer, fuel etc with cash. The amount of electricity and internet outages this year has to be in the high teens in Queensland so far in 2024 alone.
Half year ago I went to Bunnings in SA, bought something for $ 53.35. I said I pay only cash. They said, they haven't got any money. I said again that I pay only cash. Gave them $100 and after about 5 min. they gave me change.

Couple of years ago the power station went down for 24 hrs. You could only get food or services if you had cash.

Here in Norway there are barely any banks left of the streets, getting cash requires a trip to an ATM which aren’t prevalent either. Using cash can be an issue too, as many businesses don’t accept cash anymore. So I’m surprised to hear my leaders are working on this after decades or subverting cash
I find it really depends on the country. A lot of the developing world uses mainly cash. Even wealthy countries like Japan, Germany and Switzerland still largely use cash. Am in Canada. Ever since the government froze people’s bank accounts after the trucker protest, I’ve largely gone back to cash for most in-person transactions. Even though, a court recently ruled in the truckers’ favour, that process took 2 years! So you can’t really trust the government for anything!
As a Melbourne bus driver, i can tell as fact, 90% of people dont pay!

Fantastic Norway! Totally agree with this guy on the news program! Wake up Australia pollies!
Its true, as a Norwegian I have not used cash for a long time. We use something called vipps, "cash" on the phone. Credit /debit cards for most transactions. Sending money up to a about $500 for free using vipps to friends and family. But I carry a bit of cash for emergency - like today vipps were down in all of Norway... Some years ago vipps were down again during 17 may, our national day... If we get a cyber attack crashing our economic system, cash will be a good backup! Removing cash is not a good idea.
Wow. NZ is ahead in something. Our buses still take cash. The Reserve bank even said preserving cash use a while ago was a good thing. During the Christchurch earthquakes cash was the only thing for a while.
Rule #1 in infosec (re security programs): If you can make it, I can break it.
Most people who still use cash have probably not even been counted
How come nobody talks about the "environmental impact" of EFTPOS versus cash though? Greenies don't want to hear that EFTPOS is responsible for more CO2 pollution than all the airplanes flown in the world put together, cash is pollution-free for a hundred years after minting. They just want to have a cappucino and pay the bank while not being able to count their cash.
