I refused to give my dob to a legitimate company calling me when I knew they were going to call me. Gave them a lesson, playing suspicious. A person can have emails hacked and a scammer calling when the person expects it, giving them the last piece info they need. My address is on countless websites I shopped from but my dob figures on only those that essentially need it. Social media aren't in that category, neither are shopping platforms. Callers must have other ways to verify me than via sensitive info. If I call somewhere, that is different.

  • @sonycans

There is a genuine reason @notoriousm.i.g.9467 should a genuine caller release their number, many people will call then for tax advice where they may have specific training on a particular tax law. Ot all... superannuation, business tax, corporate tax, non profit... They're not tax agents. Also these numbers can then be blocked or falsely reported as spam which then makes the numbers useless. Genuine government officers will call from a private number like the police and they will refer you to call back to their direct number, an alternative switchboard number and to confirm the message they will leave you with a reference. Should you feel it is a fake call call the switchboard which is confirmed on their web site and ask them to check the reference number. Once verified they will transfer you to the appropriate officer.

My favourite part isn't the cloned website, the robotic process automation, or the redirect at the end. My favourite part is the pattern of having to provide account details, 2FA, sensitive information, and then seemingly being logged out and having to start all over. This is EXACTLY what it is like calling a big company. Australians are used to being transferred and needing to re-authenticate and tell their story half a dozen times before giving up. It's like they've taken a crappy call centre experience, and replicated it for the web.

When I still had a landline and a silent number years ago I called Telstra and they temporarily took over my PC to fix an internet issue using a one off program you give permission for each time. Not sure they use it anymore for obvious reasons. But every day following I had scammers calling me claiming to be from Telstra who knew my name when a silent number should've made it impossible for a scammer to link my name with my number telling me my PC/internet was playing up asking for access via that program. After 5 days in a row of calls I said "I know you're a Telstra employee". They hung up and I never got another call. Been sus ever since that some scammers are closer than we think.

I've taught my Mum never to click on links on her PC or phone but her Dr sends SMS and wants a reply of YES/NO via a link to confirm her appts when I tell her not to click on them. I've now put the Dr's number in her phone so it comes up as a known contact but they don't make it easy for older people to differentiate and more of them are doing that now. Recently Telstra called my stepfather (80) over his modem dropping back to 4G from NBN. They rang to help but insisted he confirm his ID to them before they'd go further and he refused. Fortunately it was just a reset I could do. Experiencing my own modem issues I know they legit call. But how are older people supposed to judge?

Sadly we need to call back because they do ring then expect you to give them your ID (when they contacted you so know exactly who you are) for 'privacy reasons'. Yet at the same time they tell us not to hand out that information. Same with SMS. My Drs appointment app started sending me SMS asking me to confirm my appt by clicking a link to then say yes/no the day before and if I don't respond will cancel my appointment. My Mum's Dr does too but they use their clinic's number. My app doesn't. They need better systems.

Great video. It's short, to the point, informative and explained in layman's terms without all the God-awful jargon. What I'm going to do is get onto the government and media and push for a new daily report, like the weather, sport, finance, etc, that would run for 2 to 5 minutes as a regular part of the nightly news. It would simply cover any scam that is currently doing the rounds, whether email, text, phone, etc and give a quick, simple, effective summary. It can either be a cordinated report, say from police fraud squad or other government department, or individual station produced segments. It's become such a big issue now that it won't rob online channels of revenue, it'll enhance what's already out there and give even more credibility, strengthening genuine content and sending the scammers ducking for cover. Thoughts?

I think, when you use your license as ID at the police station or AusPost, or send a scan of both sides, you dont realise they're using that code too - I've only needed it when I was trying to get a copy of my birth certificate from another state.

This number should only ever be shown to the police, your bank. Maybe Centrelink but not sure about that. The main purpose of the licence card number is to prevent anyone other than yourself opening a bank account under your details. Never give that number to anyone you are not required to by law.

Every government communication, whether email or sms, never uses links. They tell you to login to the official site. Scams always include links.

If you owe the ATO ponzie scheme money you will be hounded to the grave and beyond. If the ATO ponzie scheme owe you money it will make no effort at all to inform you. And if you contact them and ask for it back they will make it almost impossible to claim it. That’s a lived experience by me.

Gee they are getting good, I bet a few people have been caught. I haven’t had that one, but I keep getting messages that I haven’t paid a toll . Oh dear lol. In my senior years I’ve developed an inner ear problem, my balance goes, so I stopped driving about 2 years ago for safety reasons (gee I miss the independence of driving). But getting tole fines when I don’t drive - lol. . I bet many get them who do drive. I’m lucky though, when in doubt I contact my son who’s had his own computer business for years - he comes in handy some times lol 😊 Keep up the great work for those who haven’t got an expert on hand, you are much appreciated and very much needed.

That's funny in itself, it's even funnier, and weird, when they start with "Hi Dear" or "Hi Love" or something like that. Something certainly gets lost in whatever translation program they're using.

I haven't had one, but I have had the phone calls were "we have had notification of out of the ordinary transactions on your credit card" ones. Each time I press 1 to authorize (cause I want to have fun with these pricks) I get a sound they are in the kitchen cleaning their dishes or snoring telling me their success rate is rather low.
