Aung San Suu Kyi and the democratic disillusionment in Myanmar (Full documentary, 2019)

The entire world praised the military and Aung San Suu Kyi, when power was passed on to the democracy icon after 50 years of military dictatorship. One year later she defended an ethnic cleansing and had isolated herself from the public. This film tells you why
This film takes us back to when the military made their master plan for a so-called democracy and wrote a very scripted role for their enemy no. 1, Aung San Suu Kyi. The film does not drown in history but builds in a dramatic way the character and story set-up that takes the audience anew into the crisis they know from the news - however, with a radically different perspective. The film is built by bricks of stories and key characters and is told in a spellbinding manner of pursuing a deeper mystery. The audience gets deeper and deeper into this complex world of power driven by peculiar characters and even astrology.

Through key players of the turbulent political history of Myanmar, this documentary attempts to find out to what extent Aung San Suu Kyi, the Peace Nobel Prize laureat, has been cheated by the Burmese army and its promises of democratic transition? And thus understand her silence on the Rohingya genocide.
In 2010, following the uprising of the "Saffron revolution", Myanmar begins a hesitant process of political and economic reform; courts amended, freedoms expanded. Aung San Suu Ky was released, she participates in the government in 2012 and the National League for Democracy (NLD) comes to power in 2015. Democracy in Myanmar remains a parenthesis, after five decades of military dictatorship, the whole system could not change. Military has always be a component of Birma contemporary history.
To win the election, Aung San Suu Kyi had decided to trust the Burmese army, which she had spent decades fighting, when she began the country's democratic transition. The icon is a bit faded by the difficulties and pitfalls of the democratic transition that the regime intends to master while inter-religious and ethnic violence periodically shakes the country. Indeed civilian power remains limited in comparison with that of the military, regardless of the verdict of the ballot box. Aung San Suu Kyi, who hoped during her term of office to bring to a successful conclusion the peace processes initiated with the numerous ethnic rebellions that plague the country's outlying regions, has not succeeded in doing so, as the army has been diligent in putting the brakes on discussions. Aung San Suu Kyi had limited power, the military controls democracy through the country's constitution, which allows the military to retain regal ministerial positions and a percentage of seats in parliament that allows it to veto any changes to the constitution. Her governement has let the violence spread throughout the country and turned a blind eye to the genocide of the Rohingya a Muslim minority in Burma, Southeast Asia. Thousands have been killed and more than 740,000 Rohingya have been forced to flee to neighboring Bangladesh.

Those people looking from outside looking into Myanmar has no real understanding of the real situation in Myanmar. ASSK (Daw Aung San Suu Kyi) did not defend the dictatorship or the military for its wrongdoings - she defended her country from being punished for something that she could not control. The military had its own power share in the legislative government (automatic control of 25% of total seats without any votes) as well as own control over both internal and external security, military, and police forces. ASSK never had any ANY control of the military unless she played along - in which case she could play "give-and-take" to further the freedom of her constituents - which she could control. If she pointed fingers at the military for any wrongdoings publicly, the military always had the military power to take back the country, and they did.

This documentary was made in 2019. Since then Aung Sang Suu Kyi has been re-arrested and jailed again by the military. I have my utmost respect for her in persevering through all these lifetime turmoils. As outsiders, the world has no right to expect her to go beyond what she has endured. She fights, makes compromises, suffers, endures, survives, with lots of sacrifices along the way. Her fight is of a multidimensional nature, just to focus on her response to the Rohingya crisis would be to undermine the rest of the problems that she has to face

Do people think that ethic minorities in Myanmar only include Rohingya? Like why I’m seeing a lot of people supporting the military and saying Myanmar got their justice… sure, for those who stayed silent or didn’t speak out, Karma came back to them but how about the rest of the 40% ethnic minority of the country that blatantly get dragged into this mess? Do they have to suffer too for the amusement of people who thinks karma is doing a good job. Seems ironic that the same people who were against the violence against Rohingyas are clapping their hands for the violence against the whole country.

My takeaway from this is: it is ASSK’s agenda and the people’s desire to live in a democratic society. The path of course is not easy considering they have been under military rule for decades. It will not be a switch that anyone in Burma can just turn on. The change will be generational. ASSK knows this. She has a good idea of how the military thinks having grown up in their company. That is why she acted the way she did witth them. That said, I think she was brave to challenge them by being state counsellor. She also knew how precarious this position is politically, with their legislature enslaved to the military mindset. It is unfortunate that some people in and out of Burma took advantage of this pre existing problem with the Rohingyas and used it to derail the people’s quest to enter the path towards democracy. It also did not help that the international community looked at this issue only in the lens of already democratic societies without regard for the pecularities that exist in Burma and the challenges that need to be navigated by their leaders and the people who are in the forefront. And by withdrawing support for ASSK they literally fed this fragile country back to military rule, erasing all the effort they have put in to lay the groundwork for democracy to exist and thrive. I hope this country finds their way into the democratic stream soon.

I have visited Myanmar 5 times: first 2008 last 2012 because in 1992 I made friends with a Burmese Australian in Sydney while I was studying at college out there. He fled his country after 8/1988 event. It is truly regrettable that no one ever could replace her as a national symbolic political figure with power like her. Externally Myanmar is surrounded by regional superpowers like China and India. The ASEAN cannot interfere with each member states politics and no power to bring a full democracy to Myanmar because the political system has been stuck since the end of WW2. Suu Ky had been used by western powers as a political puppet and later in regards to the Rohynga isuues, she backed down as a Burmese person and Buddhist . She could not deprive herself of nationalism at all to unite all ethnic groups. Right now there has been a civil war in the northern part of the country. I fear that this unrest will unfortunately go on unless the regional powers get together in order to solve the current problems. I still recall my beautiful trip experiences with sweet memories with beautiful people that I met with. Thank you.

Do you “don’t blame her” this hypocrite of the Nobel laureate order for overseeing and DENYING the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya minority? Was that also because “she didn’t have control of the army and didn’t want to anger them”? You see contrary to mass delusion, these types of evil leaders don’t appear in a vacuum. They are a symptom of the deeply sick and dysfunctional society they come from. Remember this “Corruption is a grass roots movement “! Europeans went around the world and drafted “constitutions” without the input of the people, fast forward a few centuries later, all manners of Neo colonial slaves talk about “protecting the constitution “ a useless self serving document drafted and enforced at the barrel of a gun by their former slave masters designed to perpetuatally trap them in socio economic slavery forever. Let’s not talk about the sheer number of so called “dictatorships” Installed and supported by “the West”😂😂 This shit is a game and spectators like you and your mental gymnastics live for it. All of them are rotten and guilty as sin. Devilish evil waste of space. They care nothing for the people, only themselves and their own interests. If I asked you to supervise over the whole sale murder of a village of children would you do it or walk away? The arrogance that has to exist in her tiny body to even imagine that her input and existence is needed for Myanmar to be “democratic” or whatever is absolutely laughable. So all the mental gymnastics in the world for overseeing the clown show that is or was her “government “ is just as comedic. God bless all the righteous men and women who refused to be figure heads and puppets.

After watching this it seems like she was put in an impossible position. Adhere to western requirements to condemn the acts against the Rohingya, or maintain the credibility of state counselor to wield some semblance of authority and influence to steer the nation into an eventual democratic future. The constitution of Myanmar allows the military to do whatever they want and not be controlled by civilian authorities. They were gunning for her from the beginning, and unfortunately she was blindsided by the military's actions with no constitutional power to do anything about it. Truly an impossible position to be in. I empathize for the Rohingya people who were caught in this crossfire as well as Aung sang suu kyi for trying to work within a system that ultimately would never allow her to be successful.

And because the citizens of Myanmar didn't raise human rights violations concerns back then, now they are facing human rights violations themselves. Who are you to decide the citizenship of the rohingya

But for now Burma is caught up between Beijing backed dictatorship and American sanctions I hope India can somehow help and bring back Aung San Soo Kee(sorry if I misspelled) and believe it or not if she stood against what happened to Rohingyas she would've been unpopular and Military would've got all the more reason to arrest her because as far as I remember Virathu was quite popular amongst Burmese people.

I noticed, She don’t know well about Myanmar peoples’s spirits because she stayed away from Myanmar long time. The peoples around her has no chance to point her because of her hard self confidence & proud of herself. Finally she did many mistakes and loose Power, Trust/ everything.Main cause is she has no true person around her.

People should remove the wool from their eyes and see the glaring truth of what that woman Aung San Su Kyi sacrificed for them...her whole life. She could have just enjoyed her life as the daughter of the nation's founder, but wasted her whole life for blind and ungrateful Myanmar. The diplomat at the international community was ashamed of the accusations of genocide etc. by the other representatives of other countries. I deeply sympathise with those strive against all odds. Nothing to be ashamed of. Be proud that you are not among the perpetrators. God bless. ❤️

As someone from India having a neutral perspective, I shall say that the sufferings of the Myanmar citizens and Aung san Suu kyi under the military dictatorship right now is karmic justice, for keeping quiet and enabling and supporting the Rohingya genocide in 2017. Though I dont believe in God, But I believe in karma. The cries of all the innocent Rohnigyas who were killed, raped, rendered homeless by a violent military cheared on by the citizens of Myanmar will continue to haunt the Myanmar citizens forever. I was vindicated when I saw the military impose dictatorship on the citizens of Myanmar, killing protestors in 2020, the same citizens who were earlier either silent or chearing on the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingyas. But I saw in this video how people of myanmar took out rallies supporting the military actions in Rakhine. Now dont cry when the citizens themselves have been oppressed by the military dictatorship.

What wasn't new was the timing that we was able to vote and get the leader and politics we want; which was just beginning when the crisis happened. But you guys look at the tip of iceberg. If you study well by this video, you should realize why she kept silence and move forward, so do Myanmar citizens. We want a true and peaceful change, and end the nightmare. Otherwise the coup happened since then, none of you can practically share our suffering. Even now you can just critize without acknowledging Rohingya activists and community are altogether protesting against the military. I wish more would point this out. Yes it was unfortunate that she did not meet the requirements for presidency and whilst it could have been added to prevent her, it is also a logically sound clause and requirement in its own right. It is meant to hinder any potential foreign influences through marriage or familial relation as after all the position is presidency of a nation. Nobody forced her to fall in love with a foreign national, get wedded and start a family in her own right. But in doing so, she was bound by possible foreign influences as her two children took on the citizenship of their father. We can look at any other constitutions of the world, can the president be of a foreign nationality and not be a naturalized citizen, can their spouses be of a foreign nationality and not a naturalized citizen through marriage, can their direct children be of a foreign nationality and not naturalized citizens. As I recall, for the US Presidency some requirements to having citizenship exists. I remember Melania Trump's visa and citizenship documents being scrutinised by the media and even a committee of some sort.
