Military seize power in Myanmar detaining Aung San Suu Kyi - BBC News

The armed forces have seized power in Myanmar and detained the country's leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratically-elected figures.
Troops are patrolling the streets and a night-time curfew is in force along with a one-year state of emergency.
US President Joe Biden has raised the possibility of new sanctions.
The army alleges the recent election victory by Ms Suu Kyi's party was undermined by fraud. She has urged her supporters to “protest against the coup”.
Myanmar, also known as Burma, was ruled by the military until 2011. After democratic reforms, Aung San Suu Kyi was in partial control with the military's agreement.
After spending 15 years under house arrest, Aung San Suu Kyi was hailed around the world as a symbol of democracy and awarded the Nobel Peace prize. However her leadership and reputation were damaged after she defended the army's brutal treatment of Myanmar's minority community of Rohingya Muslims.
Huw Edwards presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Fergal Keane.

I'm an American living over here in Myanmar and I've been doing so for the past couple of years. Yangon was one of the more peaceful cities I've lived in around the world, there was little ethnic tensions in the city and you would hardly be able to tell about what's going on outside. It is true that there are severe problems and some of the neighboring states in the country but a lot of this is because of the Myanmar military, which works independently from the civilian government, that was inciting those acts of violence. Think of it like the president of the US having zero say and what the US army does. I'm hopeful that things will resolve and I'll be here to watch what happens wishing the best for my fellow foreigners living in the country and for the country itself. Let's hope that a peaceful resolution is around the corner, otherwise I fear the actions of the past maybe repeated.

@@olefella7561 my honest opinion is that was wrong to colonize Nations as they had their freedom before the colonials came. But with that said the actions of the past can't be changed. All of the Nations that you speak of bear the same scars and I always had hoped that Nations that mended those scars better than others would at some point try to help fellow countries that went through the same tribulations. Because when you think of it Myanmar and the US have that unique tie that they were both British colonies at one point. They just both went about different ways in gaining their sovereignty. Neither path was easy but I think I can say that the US is doing much better than it's past sister colonies. Though this may be wishful thinking, I would like to see the US guide those that were once colonies onto the path that brought the US to where it is today. Still not perfect but much better than it use to be.

It always saddens me thinking that back in Myanmar's prime it was once the jewel of education in Southeast Asia but look what military rule did to it.

If you look at major cities like Yangon and Mandalay, you will find regular people of different religions living harmoniously. Google Sule Pagoda in downtown Yangon for example, just across the Pagoda there is the Bengali Sunni Jamel Mosque and on the opposite side, a Baptist Church. Even on social media, any video of extremist "monk" Wirathu who western media love reporting on, is cussed at, laughed at etc. Unfortunately of course, there are racists who will believe in his bullshit, but they are brainwashed and full of hatred and do not represent the average Burmese. The ongoing civil dispute in Rhakine is incredibly complex, many people including Hindus, Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims were affected. It is not a simple matter of one party carrying out genocide like sensationalist media like to report it as. It does nothing but aggravate the situation and I fear it will get even worse for all ethnic minorities now that the military has taken over. We are completely helpless. For those who are saying Burmese people deserve it because they commited genocide against Rohingyas, please learn more about Burma's history. Now, I can't say for sure there might or might not have been atrocities going on since I was not physically there but every Burmese people know how brutal and heartless military can be. I am not denying anything cause we know. Cause we lived through their evil. We have lived through days where they say your bills is worthless and invented whole new bills so that in one second, you become penniless. We have lived through the days where Sims card were at least $1000 so that no one could afford even a phone. We have lived through days where when electricity came back, we were at joy because..it was a luxury to have electricity and water. No communication, no internet, standing in queues to get rice, water, limited gas for cars... no freedom. The military had the power all along. The current government might have only 10% of power but they were the ones who stood by its citizens. I know people point at Burma as a whole and say you are accomplices at genocide..but do you see this? This coup just proved the military was in power all along. The government had to choose and was forced its hands to defend the military to protect the country as a whole and that's politics. I am not saying it is right but if they haven't done that, the military would have taken over sooner. And now, when we are this close to freedom, when we are this close to form a new Parliament, the nightmare starts again. We have no win win as people living in Burma. Foreign countries do sanctions; it's the people who are gonna be hurt. The military takes over; people suffer again. We can't win. I hope this sheds even a tiny bit of light to why Burmese people have been so supportive towards Aung San Su Kyi. She was the only one who cared. No one did. If she wanted power as foreign media painted..I am sorry. She could have gone back to UK to reunite with her family and lived a very respectable life as a noble prize winner. But she didn't. And that's why Burmese people support her.

Sir, the real culprit of the case is the military who has the power over 50 years. They never were under the government control and the democracy we got all along was just fake, living in fear of them. They hide the news from the government and when found out, too late. They just put blame on Su Kyi and had to remain silence for their action over the people. Now the fear become the reality.

Even if their own military starts mass murders, DON'T NOBODY REQUEST THE US OR THE UK OR THE UN TO DO ANYTHING!!! Cause all it will do is come right back at us. Which is why many are glad that the US stayed out of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict. It's not problem anymore. We're not the police, we're not care takers of the world. These poor small suffering countries can fight each other and their people when ever and as long as they want now. The Burmese people can deal with it themselves, wish them luck and hope, pray for them or don't, I don't care. And neither should the developing world care. They've been doing fine with the protests and it may not get them anywhere, but it's doing something. Showing resilience. That's great. If you have a dictionary, find the difference in the definition of "Leader" and a "President". Aung San Su Kyi is a Leader, a mere symbol or an icon to those people in Myanmar, meaning she can't do sh** as long is military has the power. If she have the power, she would have become a president in this country like long long time ago, but instead, now, she don't even have the power to repair a broken landline in front of her house. The army never needed a support. They always do what they want. And a little fan fact, those Rohingya genocide that you just recently hearing, do you think they just start killing them like in 2017? They have been killing them since 80s lol. And the world does not know about it cuz myanmar was practicing communist back then. Now that they have the full power again, you can pretty much guess what's gonna happen to Rohingya or should I say muslim minority in that country. My wild guess would be 10x worst, if not 100 times. But the only difference this time is that the world will not know that they are killing them like back in the days lol.

Externally frozen and blocked accounts have also been reopened. She also defended herself after attending the ICJ. Prizes have been revoked and internationally condemned The ICJ has rarely been able to stand up straight. This time, the military is back in power and has taken over the rights of Mother Aung San Suu Kyi for the second time. There will be more billionaires. Those violence are done by the military and now the evil is in its full power. 🙂 She is the one working for peace and development of the nationwide. You guys know what the western media make u believe although Muslims, Christians and Buddhists are living peacefully right here for many many years. Most of the Muslims here also voted for her party too. U think u know everything but trust me it isn’t that simple. The origin go all the way back to 1962, the first coup. The country was under control of the military for decades and the Muslims aren’t the only ones mistreated but the whole country.
