Alcohol, the magic potion: science behind the most harmful drug of all (Full Documentary)

Alcohol: no substance on the planet is so familiar to us and so unbelievable varied in its effects. It is readily available, and despite its psychoactive, adverse health effects, hardly anyone calls it a drug. But how is it that we can turn a blind eye to the three million alcohol-related deaths that happen each year? The director Andreas Pichler visits several countries, searching for answers concerning what makes us drink, what alcohol does to us, and to what extent the powerful alcohol industry and its lobbyists influences politics and society. He also presents us with ways we can turn the tide. Without being self-righteous or overly-critical, the film will have a lasting effect on the drinking habits of all who watch it.

I use to love drinking. I rarely drink now, but not because I’m making an effort not to. As I got older it just became less and les appealing. The alcohol ‘high’ has become something I tend to avoid rather than pursue. It’s simply no longer enjoyable, mentally or physically. Just my personal experience.

I drank for 40+ years. Quit in 2020 cold turkey. I had craving the first few weeks, but it wasn't a big deal. I have a theory. I think, that in part, the rehab industry, and the beverage industry, are more profitable, if you could convince the public that it is an addiction, and you are powerless to over come it. They want you to think that you must drink. Rehab success rates at 5 years: near zero. Back in you go, more money and profits. ROund and round you go. A self sustaining industry. Just a theory.

I was a normal American male drinker until about 7 years ago. I never got a DUI or in any real trouble drinking but I know I embarrassed myself a lot but not in a dangerous way. I had my first child at 37 though and it was a boy. For some reason I could never shake the feeling that I never ever wanted my son to see me wasted. I always wanted my kids to see me cool and in control. The logician in me told me the only sure way to ensure my kids from seeing me drunk was to stop getting drunk. So I stopped cold turkey as they say. Most of my peers didn't understand and eventually I got shunned from my social circles that involved drinking. I make sure to never tell someone not to drink and I have loads of "when I was wasted one time" stories but drunk or tipsy people seem not to want to associate with stone sober people. I ended up losing some friends and contacts but thankfully I have my own strong family that I am the head of the household. I do not regret either drinking or stopping drinking I guess I just believe there are times and places during life for everything. Well it's been about 7 years and I still have not touched a drink and the thought of the taste seems pretty yucky. Maybe after my kids grow up I will have some more drinks but I don't know. All I know is that I am happy with my decision and I am happy and respectful of others decisions. Cheers & God Bless

@@scottjackson163 A main factor in my decision was that I didn't want my children witness me being wasted. Also my adopted dad never drank after I turned 5 years old. It's awkward though going to medical appointments and they ask how much I drink and I tell the doctor zero for about a decade now and they don't know what to respond. They were about to blame your health problems on drinking then that option is gone. Sometimes the doctors have reacted to the point of accusing me of lying to them as far as not drinking.

People i go out to eat or socialize with don't care what's in my glass and are often grateful that i and others can drive them home. Of course the ones who always need a ride are a bit boring to be around when they get that way, but there's a pretty good mix of drinkers and non drinkers out there. Celiacs and people who just don't like the taste.

On average deaths from crack cocaine annually have been about 5,000 although they did peak at about 20,000 in 2021. In comparison, the annual deaths from alcohol are at 175,000 and that's not including other conditions and specific accidents that involve alcohol. And if you done any research you would see that the number of deaths related to alcohol is higher than that of opioids and other drugs. A Reuters study in 2010 determined that alcohol was three times deadlier than cocaine. Although less pure substances like crack are obviously not in the comparison. However, it is worth noting that for all the judgment that hard drugs diluted with chemicals receive, alcohol is indeed a poison and is used in industrial cleaning and other applications similar to chemical products like draino.

That's one of the things that makes me feel like a stranger in this world: I've never liked alcohol. When I was a teenager I tried several times to keep up with my friends drinking but afterwards I felt really bad. It was around 20 years old that I finally decided: alcohol and I didn't mix, and I never drank again. Today I am 70 years old and I think I made a good choice.

I was a functional alcoholic for 20 years. Binge drinking on weekends, blacking out and waking up at random place. Going into work hungover, reeking of alcohol and getting sent home a couple of times. I finally gave it up two years ago, it was difficult at first but now I don't even think about it anymore, it's just a part of me. I feel much healthier now, I have more money, I have more time (no hangovers), I'm more goal oriented, I'm just a much better person. It took me 20 years to realize you can be content with who you are without any highs or lows.

I got pulled into drinking after being VERY AGAINST it. It completely destroyed my life. I take full responsibility, it's my fault. Then again the extreme dangers of drinking are rarely even talked about. I'm 33 now and basically have dementia or signs of Wet brain. I cannot function or remember anything for the most part. my motor skills are deteriorating. I ripped my stomach lining to the point that i'm done drinking and years later it still aches me every second of the day. Drinking rots your body and mind. I drank $2 vodkas, malt liquor, straight GARBAGE day and night to the point i had multiple alcohol withdraw seizures. It was more than addiction and just living in fear of seizures and insane withdraw. I don't even know why I thought getting blackout drunk was "fun" or I needed to do it. I'll be gone soon and I have a young daughter and the pain, regret and darkness is beyond troubling.

Because its about who controls the supply. Western govts can control alcohol supplies...they cant do the same with other drugs. Now the US has realised it can control marijuana you can see it become legalised as well. The differentiation between alcohol, tobacco and other drugs is a state controlled con.

The line about "worries all fade away" is brilliant. This is one of the top reasons I occasionally drink, along with the uninhibition and general good feeling. I am not addictive and it is not a problem for me. I am curious about whether there are many people out there who have no need for at least a brief respite from their worries and attendant anxiety, either because they are lucky enough not to have those in their life, or because their psychology is such that they do not need a break from those things.

Everybody needs a break. It's just that alcohol is not really a break, it's an escape. It does nothing to hope you cope. I would rather spend a few hours at a gym, have a sauna, go swimming. Everyione has worries, it's how you handle them that hurts or helps

I never drank because I am a Muslim, but whenever I would go out with friends in the past who did drink, I always was so happy I did not drink. I would watch them falling apart during the night, vomiting, crying, talking non stop nonsense, fighting, falling and the next day they would feel like crap and still vomiting. I would always help them or even try to persuade them to take it easy. But I never understood why anyone would disgrace themselves like that. Watching them, was only a big confirmation for me that drinking is just self harming. Also when going on holidays with friends, they were not able to wake up early due to the hangover to do some sight seeing. There is no better feeling than waking up early, fit and rested for the day, and why anyone would exchange that for a hangover is beyond me. Last but not least, I have worked at multiple international companies where we had drinks each Friday afternoon or on special occasions. I did not drink, but other colleagues did. I went like a couple of times and after that I decided I would never attend these drinks again. After a few drinks you see people change and getting rude and obnoxious. Now wherever I work, I make it clear in advance that I do not attend any drinking occasions or a night out , period. I just want to stay away from these "social " events where people drink.

Excellent documentary 👏 As a person in harm-reduction & long-term recovery, I appreciate gaining the new perspective of having a "favourite receptor" and finding ways to stimulate it. I'm rather gobsmacked that in Canada, despite the variety of different recovery treatments I've participated in, this concept was never conveyed. I'm going to try it. Thank you so much! ❤

When i was with my ex, his family loves to drink and it sort of makes me appreciate a good social drink. When we broke up, i sort of looked for that same comfort feeling by drinking. And i really appreciate my drink tbh, the level of wooziness and calmness it brings to my being. Then headaches and uncomforted feeling the next day starts to sink in and as healthcare professional- i knew it’s not sustainable to have a particular liking to alcohol. Looking back, i don’t think ill ever had that feeling of comfort again without consciously being aware of its implications.

Day 43 without a drink, after a 35+ year love affair. This was not a temporary break up, I mourn my beloved booze. I cannot safely take a single sip, those days have passed. All of the best, and worse times of my life involved booze. My family home was all about booze. I rode that crazy train until the wheels fell off. The detox and early days were hell this time, and those first couple of sweaty, sleepless weeks remind me not to slip and have to start over; not to mention the chaos that comes with living as an alcoholic. I don't blame alcohol, or anyone else for my half-decisions, half-luck life experience. In a sane World however, it would be classified honestly, as a psychoactive substance. The most toxic, dangerous and widely abused one at that. The phony 'war on drugs' should end immediately. Alas, Civilisation is in reverse.

AND TOO....the spinning room was a total deal breaker. that's not to say i don't have a drink every 5/10 years, and during killer hot summers there are times when a REALLY cold beer just hits the spot, but for the most part?.....i had enough growing up surrounded by drinking i'm good.

Alcohol is the only drug where the addict never seeks the strongest version of it. That's because the alcohol is not the addictive part. It's the sugar and the grains that it's made of that are addicting people, just like food. If you're an alcoholic suffering, try this... eliminate sugar grains and carbohydrates of all kinds from your diet and your addictions will start to diminish. The easiest way is an Elimination Diet like a carnivore diet, a zero carb diet or a very low carb like a ketogenic diet. Remember plants are toxic and this is made from plants. Meat is healthy and safe there are no addictive animals. At 30 minutes into this documentary I'm convinced this was produced by the alcohol industry to diminish your negative view of alcohol. The devil is a liar! ♥️🔥💪
