Attack on Titan Finale - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Attack on Titan Final Chapter - The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. Chapter 139 of Attack on Titan was incredibly inconsistent. I keep moving forward.

I agree that going back on the shock value of Jean, Connie, and Gabi dying was cheap, but I only semi-agree because I think the shock value of Jean, Connie, and Gabi dying was cheap in general. It just shouldn't have happened period, it felt really hamfisted to me. One final "oops here's a couple more characters dying" right before the finish line. Enough people have died, just let the story resolve.

If it really is true. Then it's a sign of a weak writer (not a bad one), since the story we're told is not the authors anymore, it's the fanbase's. Even if the author goes in the opposite direction (killing a fan-fav-character), if they do it just to spite their readers, then it stopped being their story.

Isayama a slave to his editors. A predetermined ending made by ymir (Editors/shonenmagazine or anyfck). I see your message isayama. You've been trying to change the ending but you are still a slave, going with the flow, cant do anything about it. You invoke freedom but you yourself is not. You yearned for it, dreaming of it. A slave in the end.

So Armin basically decided to punch Eren because he hurt Mikasa’s feelings... does he realize that Hange died because of Eren ? Does he realize that millions of innocent people including kids died because of Eren ? Like bro wtf the issues at stake are far bigger than Mikasa’s feelings... Also I truly want to know how tf is Armin gonna portray Eldians as non-devils when they are literally chanting the words of the man who killed 80% of the world... anyway.

the conversation took place between 131-132 chapters, the hanji was still alive. and Armin understands Eren's fault no more than Eren himself. what does their words have to do with it? Paradise is still a closed country. chosen by history, she decides whether to continue the war or not. in history there have been cases where common sense won out in such conflicts. an escalation of violence was inevitable in any outcome. and the rest of the world survived because of not like all the Eldians, there is no time for resources, experts are likely to think how to prevent a conflict.yams at a minimum told about the outside world, anything can happen, when we have an open ending what do such discussions mean only if not for the reader himself

The conversation took place during 131. The Rumbling, it is implied, had only reached Marley and Hange hadn't died then. Moreover, Armin asks him again and again as to why Eren had to go to such extreme lengths, 2/3rds of their conversation is dedicated to it. Armin going all out punching Eren in Rage for the Rumbling would be very childish-not to mention, incredibly out of character for Armin. Given, he understands the gravity of the situation and would want to understand the cause of it. With Mikasa, however, it is about a personal bond bw the 3 that was shattered due to Eren's actions that is why the sentimental outburst. Also, Eren reveals to Armin that he (Armin) (HIS BEST FRIEND) is about to engage with him in a battle to death in which Eren (HIS BEST FRIEND) will die. So there's that. Stop looking for cookie-cutter Morality in AoT. Also, do people even remember the female titan vs Attack Titan fight way back in Season 1? How many innocent civilians were killed then for the 'greater good'...All of Erwin's plan required 90% of the volunteers to die for it to succeeded, yet AoT characters, especially Levi respected him even though in the course of one of these gambles Levi's entire squad was butchered. It is about understanding where the other person is coming from, when you have a personal bond with them. You cannot forgive them but you understand them and their motivations.

The theory that Isayama changed the ending is interesting for me. On one hand he did leak the final manga panel, but that was said it’s subject to change at a later date so I’m fine with it. Tho things like Ymir loving king fritz is out of nowhere. I think he just introduced that because he had. He never went in depth with Ymirs motivations before and had to cramp it into the final chapter. There should’ve been build up and foreshadowing before but there wasn’t. The ending had things that I love like Levis ending, mikasa killing eren, and the open ending for paradi. I hated things like Eren killing him mom (just make it Ymir) and Ymir loving king fritz. The parallel between Mikasa and Ymir round be fine if actually done properly. Reiner becoming a simp would be fine if he talked about his dead comrades With pieck. It was already established that Reiner wants to clap historias cheeks. Overall I think it was fine, but I would love for the anime to go further in-depth about it. Very disappointed that the reason why a lot of people hate it is because their fan theories didn’t come true tho.

Honestly, I feel like alot of the ugly could have been decent if it was given time. Isayama really rushed a super impactful conversation between Eren and Armin in half a chapter with reveals on Eren's true plan, Ymir, Dina, Eren's love for Mikasa, everything was super rushed. The dialogue was also very weird. Luckily for Isayama he has 8 months or so until the final part of Season 4 comes out and could easily receive the feedback and criticisms from everyone and maybe work with Mappa to flesh out the final chapter for the last episode. The 3 year time skip doesnt need more than 5 minutes if you think about it however that Eren and Armin conversation needs at least 15 minutes worth of dialogue. Holding out hope for Mappa.

8:11 I don’t really understand this? Cause if they died anyways, all of the build up to Eren’s plan wouldn’t have made sense. He would have said it was for his friends and for peace on paradis but to do that he had to turn all his friends to... titans? If Isayama didn’t bring the characters back, people would be even more mad at “bad writing” for not taking Eren’s plan seriously. It was what had to be done, and even if there was another chapter (which i personally believe there should have been just to clear everything up after the time skip) it still would have left people mad anyways.

Yeah I agree. It was Eren's plan from chapter 1 to "massacre all of the titans" and that is exactly what he did in the end. If he just left Jean and Connie as titans while the entirety of the Eldian race was restored to normal humans, then I agree that would have been written wrong. I don't think that this is necessarily a bad part of the story. If anything, Eren accomplished his goal from the very start which I am thrilled about.

I used to hate Reiner, for everything he stood for, everything he did, and everything he was going to do. Everytime Isayama allowed him live after teasing his death, I would be disappointed. But then, I slowly realized that he had one of the most tragic stories next to Bertolt (Bertolts arc was more tragic because he never really seemed to want to be part of the warrior unit, and he always showed remorse for what he did, especially when he had his "conversation" with Armin during the RtSA. Saying that he never considered the Eldians of Paradis devil's, alongside calling the Eldians his friends, really hit hard after he delivered that line). All Reiner wanted was to become the hero, which he ultimately ended up becoming at the end of the series. He regretted attacking Paradis, even moreso when Eren infiltrated Liberio and the two had their passive aggressive hostile confrontation, and Reiner ended up regretting everything at once, and begged Eren to finally put him out of his misery. Now I consider Reiner and Bertolt to be one of the best characters written in AOT. As for the writing of 139, I believe 100% that Isayama was rushed to deliver an ending, just like Tite Kubo was rushed delivering an ending to Bleach. What really pisses me off however, is that the final volume of AOT will have extra pages attached to 139, extra pages that were not released when the chapter came out. I truely hope that one day, Isayama confirms that he was rushed into delivering an ending, because the writing of the chapter itself doesn't flow with Isayamas writing style, it's like the editors asked Isayama for a rough outline of the final chapter, and then wrote it without Isayamas approval. I'm still holding onto the hope that come May 2021, we get the true ending to the story, and Isayama retcons it by saying that the entire chapter took place inside Erens head after Mikasa decapitated him.

When I read chapter 139 me and my friend thought it was a joke ending just to tease at something. When we figured out we were wrong, we were both shocked. The ending felt very rushed and I was confused almost the whole way through. I feel like to keep the number meaning thing still, he could’ve split it into 2 parts. I genuinely just like AOT to end at 138, a big cliffhanger. I know it’s not good of me to disregard a whole chapter, but man it really confused me and left me kind of teased. This great series ended with a semi-happy ending. I would’ve been fine with many characters dying and the ending being sad because then it would have left an emotional impact. It disregarded a lot of character’s character development, especially Armin. The ending just feel bland, rushed, and just overall bad. I’m not blaming this on isayama though because it could’ve been the studios fault. We won’t really know.

It shouldve been more like he commits genocide because thats the only way the island is safe, and if he gets stopped by armin then thats fine too since the survivors would see the alliance as the saviours and not have enough people to overpower paradis ie lelouch plan but with extra steps

Personally, I really liked the ending. I understand why many people disliked it but I think this ending really fits AoT. If the show had just been wrapped up in a neat little bow, with world peace and all questions were answered and they all lived happily ever after, it would've felt way too out of place imo. As far as Eren saying that he doesn't know, well that's just normal. Why would he know, he's just following his destiny after he saw the future. Him now knowing and his love for Mikasa just shows that he's not this cold, unfeeling killer, he's just a kid. Also the Founder Ymir loving Fritz is kind of like what ramires said at the end: "...it traumatized me, it lifted me up, it abused me..." but we all loved it anyway. See that, mf textual evidence, I went all out lmao. I will never forget what this series has done to me. How it made me feel, how it completely drew me in with its captivating plot and how amazing each of the characters are. I will never throw any of that out just for a mediocre ending. But then again I liked the ending so you may have a different opinion. Whatever the case may be, thanks for reading. I love you

I honestly don’t want to seem harsh but the ending seems as if an 8 year old wrote it.You ever want to bring back characters or hold on to hope that your favorite character somehow survived thats exactly what Isayama did.All the hype around it being a sad ending really made me realize it was rushed. There’s way to many plot holes. And again horrible writing.Isayama is way to good for the forced narrative he built for the ending.

I thought personnally about the Reiner being a creep thing extremely funny, on character and emblematic of the overall narative. Like almost all character interaction on the finale. Having lust for Historia was one of his primary trigger and coping mechanism for his "soldier'' persona vs "marley warrior". It get the more explicit on the giant tree scene revelation. Of course it will probably continue to haunt him until his death, but for once as a healthy manner. She's probably remind him of a version of his mother that he truly deep down hoped for, instead of the highly conditional and toxic caretaker he got almost all his life. Tragedy is that: even with understanding having dumbs**t parents, kid will still thrive for their recognition. Maybe it's in the smell (hormones and parasites share by people with relative DNA, and wich are highly responsible for lot of our behaviour, without them we are odourless, if you put a regular human in a dna mixer: you will find in average: more than 90% of virus/bacteria DNA, like Mithochondries who probably inspired the Titanization thing)... Basically Reiner like all character in AOT never truly fundamentally changed, they just grow and get more developped. First chapter Eren's deep psyche is equal to last chapter eren (''a suicidal basterd'' driven by some wish for the others/innocent joy (like his mom and dad)), same for Armin, Hanjie, Livai, Erwin... and so on^^. They just get deeper and more knowledgeble and honest about themselves (and by extension: the world and other people: because if you start to lie, get confused or create misconception about yourself: you probably do it a lot more about the rest: look at Grisha, Zeke, Yelena or the entire Marley and inside the walls systems for it). I think Freedom has never truly been the main theme of AOT, at least not as its market itself. "Freedom" is a bestseller in modern society in face of true Knowledge (Freedom ("with a big F motherfucker") doesn't exist and never will: freedom is the possibility to do what you want: but human want stupid and paradoxical shit (wich usually they don't even know why), wich ultimately have insane prices: so they will always fall down and be forced to do thing they don't care or want). But knowledge, discovery, especially of oneself (Titan transformation can be looked at the discovery of his own body: power and history across time, and bodys don't care about what you're thinking ! Look at your own balls and you will see: they make some lovecraftian move without you even have the glimspe of a start of consciousness) was the true theme and secret about freedom. In the End all character have accepted the truth about themselves (wich is btw character progression 101) they tried to censure all their life (except Armin, Potato girl and Hangie who are glimpses of light in seas of darkness): Mikasa and Eren finally reveal their love for each other, Reiner that his just a conformist weirdo and strong mommy boy full of heart, wich can now make peace between his insane libido of being a soldier or a warrior, Jean that his not just a coward and an irresponsible smart shit mouth, but a true hero and charimatic men... Conny that is not that stupid, useless and imature... Knowledge is power, and power lead to freedom. freedom to fight disease for example. And Knowledge can't be achieved alone: a freedom for only oneself is no freedom at all. Eren's never been free, neither of the world, neither of himself, same for all distinct thing that we can intellectualize about the narrative. A "tabula rasa" was at this point of eternal and ubiquity systematic fu***ry for all against all... the only good long term solution. All the continental nations had literally already planning to destroy eachother anyway after they done dealing with paradise... Eren just abriged all this useless strife and suffering, saving his friends and putting and end of the Titans curse on the way. Yes he didn't put an end to all war: for such a thing all humanity need to perish without exception^^ (who wish Peace ("with a big P motherfucker" : the ultimate silence of minds and bodys): truly wishes War or their own Death). But at least he also created some kind of peace (like a safe place) for their inner self, to just be themselves in phase with the world. Often: life is just s**t, and sometimes it's s**tfunny... like that time potato girl in fact care more about meat than potato... and even more about Nicolo's.. (in the japanese version: the beginning of the word meat is the same of Nicolo: so noone truly understand what she tried to say in his last breath..) Ultimately if life and freedom is not for being absurdly in love and weird: where's the point ? So yes Reiner is totally on point (while Jean is still probably an incel^^). Finally believing that Eren was the ultimate alpha chad is just stupid, AOT is an anti shonen: shonen are power fantasy. AOT is an anti-power fantasy: everyone is sick and useless in the grand scheme of things. While in a classical shonen like DBZ/S even the most low character like yamcha is in the end above Buu's power level in less than a week of training... Shonen sell impossible-dream: anti-shonen sell raw-reality. Same goes for people who don't like early Eren: face it that kid was already the only lucid one: people need knowledge (wich need to take insane risks) or they will never be free, and just be miserably comfortable, while waiting like good boys, death coming all around from behind the wall they themselves erected. But people like early Jean while playing fake character and spectacle, always lust and envy him for it.

Just look: people don't want other people to be free: "Reiner pliz stop being a creep like you always had" (as a comformist Reiner is of course a fuck/frat boy archetype too). People of course will never deeply change (except from alive to dead), Freedom is a fake stand (it explain nothing, has no cause or effect): like the one Eren had to take while being seen for what he truly is (Totally alienated from and by humanity) by a guy like Livai (wich is normal because he was the same all along, born in trash, betrayed by everyone without the right to understand why and force to strife again and again with almost no concret hope and joy). He even recognize his true feeling: cause always felt the same. (during potato girl death). Livai is one of the foil of Eren, (like many of the character, to make it short the more noticeable: Jean/Reiner/Willy Tybur and his sister/Erwin/Annie/Grisha/Zeke/Floch... the list is really really long^^), because IRL humanity will always be a foil of itself no matter what) and always has been. Like in AOT people will rationnalize with their impossible desire inside a really weird collective consciousness instead of even try to understand. They will even change their own memory and recognition of the event along the way like in AOT. That's truly scary stuff if you're not born as the apparent standard of humanity inside the territory you live, at any time and no matter what people (even you're so called ''friend'') can for some kind of nothing get maniacal/pure collective hysteria and hunt you down. And then usually only the more doubtfull, dreadfull and paranoïac or comformist survive: wich explain why we're like that in the first place... Cause all the other just get killed by humanity insane collective mind, and never had the chance to share their DNA...
