At The Railyard: Seaboard Air Line

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

...when you think of Florida, images of palm trees, sunshine, Miami, and 80s pastels come to mind. However, the Seaboard Air Line was one of the major railroads servicing it for the first half of the century. Is its style still there in Microsoft Train Simulator, or is it out of date?

Nice work! The Seaboard has always been my favorite. The SAL FT's did not have dynamics and the A and B units were coupled with a drawbar until they were scrapped! Walt

I just found out that Seaboard Air Line continues to exist today, well, from a certain point of view. (According to Wiki) SAL merged with ACL to form the SCL. in 1972, SCL along with 4 other railroads (LN, GA, West Point Route, CRR) formed Family Lines. Family Lines joined with the Chessie System (C&O, B&O, WM) to form the Seaboard System. They were merged in 1986 to form CSX Transportation.

Plants have roots (sounds like boots), transportation infrastructure has routes (pronounced as routs).

I believe there was a hamlet to Wilmington seaboard air line freight train route,I heard straight track all the way no curves ,at lease That's what my grand father told me,use to run by my grandparents house back in the 1960's(black with yellow stripe, sd-45's and Gp-18 or 9's I think. We use to live almost at the end of seaboard st.In Lumberton North Carolina. Six days a week in the afternoon I believe around 3:30 in the afternoon.Always five to six diesels pulling over a hundred or so freight cars loaded down.If I woke up at 2:00 in the morning the train from a previous night empty would be heading back in the other direction.Us being the last two houses at the end of the street. The train would be creeping by until the engines passed ,then you could hear the engines yanking the hell out of the empty cars ,a lot of empty log carring cars etc ,as the train picked up to about seventy miles an hour I believe. And no matter how fast that train went the caboose alway looked like it was going slow.

We had a two story house and up stair on the porch you could look straight down over the fields as far as the eye could see.So you could see the train light miles away. Creeping down the track .And a man could be seen coming out of the lead engine down the stairs where he would jump off the engine as the train road by the house and past the last dirt road crossing in front of the house ,eventually stopping in front of the house just past the dirt road where the guy would uncouple the cars then walk back to the lead engine where they would pull off ,you could hear the brake airline snaping sound as the lead part of the train leaves the rest of the train behind to go drop off or pickup more freight cars, the engines would be gone until night fall some times .In the mean time a guy would come walking up from the rear of the train with a walkie talkie and wait for the return of the train.which you could hear backing up and the walkie talkies going off and the guy waiting along with the train and the other guy walking the train back would signal the train using a flash light/lantern Or walkie talkie to signal the engineer to slow down and stop the train. After reconnecting the train one one guy would walk back to the engine. Then the train would take eventually take off.The guy from the rear would stay there by the side of the road until the caboose came by and then jump onto the stairs of the caboose ,and wave to me good by before going inside .Now this went on five days a week.monday to thursday.Fridays the train always would come by but never stop.In the day time a gp-9 Or 18 would ride by pushing a caboose or box car down the road with the American flags blowing in the wind.Or the track inspector yellow low riding vehicles would ride by.Damnskippy to me those were the days.

Excellent vid. Just a suggestion: Listen to Chuck Loeb's instrumental song, "E-Bop". The cool, speedy beat and rythym goes very well with this video clip. Thanks for posting this enjoyable clip. A good sampling of what quality American railroading used to be.

So, does Seaboard/CSX operate all along the East Coast parts of Florida? I'm in the process of designing a Model Railway Layout, and intend to base it on various places along the East Coast; basically between Jacksonville to Melbourne District. It will (eventually) have a fictional line (on a second level) running inland to Orlando District, and back to Jacksonville ..... If all goes to plan. I'm evaluating which Locomotives to use (Operating Companies and Road Numbers of the Locos). I'm considering CSX/SEABOARD, FEC, (and BNSF, as I'm sure I've seen Videos of them on the FEC Line).

I personally have not used this route but i think its unfair to take of points for texture transistions as the one you showed was between pavement and grass, which is not supposed to be a smooth transistion. Good video though, got me thinking of downloading and giving MSTS another try.
