Honestly, although I am a Pennsylvania Railroad girl, I have always held a soft spot for the Monon. From what a deceased Pennsylvania Railroad engineer once told me, 'The Monon was always a good interchange partner. When they interchanged with us, they took good care not to damage a thing, and the movement was swift like clockwork.' I wish the Monon had lived to see the modern day. I can picture the lines running with C44-9W's, SD70ACe's, SD40-2's, ES44AC's and so on pulling freight with F59PHI's and P42DC's in passenger service had the Monon kept passenger service and the passenger trains kept bringing in money. A nice review Nick, and a nice start for At The Railyard in 2015.

Being a born and raised Hoosier, I'm too young to have had the privilege to ride this historical rail. I would have loved a cross state train ride like this. But at least the Monon lives on today as the state's most well known and largest walking and bike trail.

On the way to see thousands of Sandhill Cranes at Jasper-Pulaski fish and wildlife area I drove through Monon, Indiana. I took a picture of the Monon caboose in the town of Monon. North of the town is the Whistle Stop Food and Dining restaurant & Monon Connection museum where I took many more pictures of rail cars and railroad equipment . If you are in the area I recommend stopping at both the museum and the restaurant. The link to the museum is: mononconnection.com/

Well in light of your opening I have to start out by saying Open channel F3. I'm the person responsible for the switchstands on most of the US MSTS routes though I handed them over to a second party for the animation and actual light physics.as my originals were simply something better than the stick next to the switch with bright material for the lamp lenses. Seeing them now these 17 or so years later I cringe a bit at how rough they were.

Cripes Nick, you're too young to know anything about Robert Vaughn and that series! LOL But you did it amazingly! And son of a biscuit eater, Rick Berg and his work. I usually only go for Canadian roads, but I'm seriously thinking about dual citizenship now! EXTREME KUDOS Rick & Nick, or Nick & Rick. You guys both get the gawd dang Oscar for this one! :)

I was just on Highway 39/421 yesterday following the abandoned Monon ROW from Rossville to Monticello... it was sad seeing it empty, but it was fun imagining what it used to look like. From the looks of it, this route might be able to help me know what it was like. I'm actually doing a similar project in Trainz 12 right now, recreating the Erie Lackawanna line from Huntington to Rochester. Of course, the EL wasn't really a Hoosier railroad, but it had some unique features on its run through here. Either way though, I'd love to see a really accurate Monon route, and I'll definitely give this one a shot (I got MSTS to work on Windows 8, so here's to hoping the route works).

I remember thinking the Monon was just another midwestern railroad. Its totally not, its a historic monument to Indiana. I never knew it only owned track in Indiana, which is cool! They owned tons of cool stuff like BL2's, Alco's and like the SP, used the light package. Cool vid!

Very nice review- I do a lot of the web/video stuff at the Indiana Transportation Museum and I've always wanted to set up a simulator on the museum grounds for people to experience our railroad history in a different way. I played MSTS on Windows XP but have since switched to Mac and only run Windows 8 on an home theater PC I have. Can I run this in Windows 8? Would MSTS or Open Rails be my best best? Thanks!

welp I need to get MSTS now, let me explain, Indiana is my home state, with (as of right now) a small railroad no as the Louisville and Indiana going north to Indianapolis and south to Louisville, and the east and west "Indiana sub" for the csx going from Cincinnati to St. Louis. My home town is where the 1st train robbery in history happened (Seymour IN.). so for short, the railroad heritage in my town is strong, and it was funny seeing the Indianapolis union station at 7:35 considering that the L&I has there own burgundy heritage units in the pennsy scheme. so the railroad heritage deep in my town, and this would make an amazing route to operate on.

+ChanceR20011 Good luck, the only easy way to get the game is to find a second-hand CD-Rom copy(Good luck prying that from the hands of a hardcore fanboy) Or to illegally download pirated copies, either online via Pirate Bay, or on a burned CD containing the game. Either way, you're going to have to catch up on over fifteen years of content packs, updates, and patches, to be able to download anything good without major technical problems. Still, once you finally do get it(however you do, I won't judge if you pirate) it's certainly worth your effort, as almost every single US railroad in history has been represented at least in a small way, plus dozens of fictional and what-if routes, enough to keep you entertained for centuries.

+sirrliv He reviewed another route three or so years ago that was actually over 3000+ miles long, and included a huge chunk of the Pennsylvania Railroad spanning more than five states. It wasn't as detailed as this one, but 3000+ miles of accurately recreated, era-appropriate railroading is quite something.

The Arctic Gamer The Pennsy Eastern Region, I remember it well. Almost makes me wish I still had a working copy of MSTS to check it out for myself. And again, more than anything Railworks/Train Simulator 2016 has to offer. Granted, we're starting to get close with things like JustTrains' Western Mainlines, which spans from London to South Wales & Cornwall, a total of over 300 miles of track. It is also now possible to travel all the way from Brighton on the English Channel to the Kyle of Lochalsh at the northern tip of Scotland via the legendary East Coast Main Line, albeit over multiple different routes.

sirrliv Yeah, but with DTG's strict restrictions on content development has held the community back. How much better could have routes like Canadian Mountain Passes, Cajon and Donner been if they allowed third party groups to develop them at their own time and price. They've started to open up, allowing groups like Digital Train Model, and G-Trax Simuations to co-develop content, which have proven time and again to be superior to their Dovetail counterparts. We as a community could have easily matched and passed MSTS by now if they just listened to critics, and loosened their stranglehold on the developers. Trainz could conceivably pass the Pennsy Eastern Region with ease, but they have the opposite problem, they have to work completely independent of Auran and N3VGames for free, with the added risk of the content being stolen without consent for the next title in the series. (Trainz hasn't produced a single first-party route since N3V bought the series in 2009) Downloading a single route, even a small 20km route, can take up to weeks, including finding the dependencies and installing third party content and software, and it can take up to a decade to produce a single route good enough for publish. A 3000+ mile long route in Trainz would take 5-10 years to make, that's assuming they have a team of people developing it 24/7, and could take up to a month to install every single dependency.
