At The Ball | The Glass Slipper | Warner Archive

The Glass Slipper (1955) #WarnerArchive #WarnerBros #TheGlassSlipper
This retelling of Cinderella may be missing the fairy-magic but is still full of glamour and enchantment. Leslie Caron captivates as a put-upon scullery step-sibling that gets the belle-of-the-ball transformation thanks to a grifter godmother (a sensational Estelle Winwood). Michael Wilding plays the princely one, the amazing Elsa Lanchester plays the wicked one and Keenan Wynn helps connive the ever-after. Charles Walters, the directorial magician behind Lili's magic, returns to lend his deft sleight of hand to this romantic fable.
Directed By Charles Walters
Starring Leslie Caron, Michael Wilding, Keenan Wynn

    It does kind of subvert the story in many ways. He fell in love with a peasant girl knowing she was a peasant girl and she fell in love with a prince thinking he was a peasant. It feels like a more level plane field. Yes he did lie, but you can understand why he did it and he owns up to it. Probably one of the healthier depictions of this romance that ive seen.

    I love Leslie Caron in everything she does especially Lili. She exudes that innocent naivety and childish wisdom of hopes, dreams, and wishes. Plus she dances so beautifully that every time I see a music box or a snow globe with a ballerina inside I always imagine it's her. I never understood the Cinder-Ella of Cinderella until watching this movie and it should seem to be obvious, but sometimes I'm just oblivious to things. I miss these big production dance scenes from older movies. That's why I'm always watching TCM. This is a beautiful one. I love the wise woman's dialogue of what fashion is when she's helping Ella dress for the ball...So true is every word.

    The Prince first meets Cinderella earlier in the film out in the woods while he's out riding with his friend and dressed in much plainer clothes, with the result that she doesn't recognize him -- he tells her that he's the son of the cook (which is why she tries to ask directions to the kitchen). At one point, she pushes him in the water and runs off because she thinks he's making fun of her -- but when she comes back to get something she left behind, he's still there and waiting for her...and once they've patched things up, he teaches her to dance.

    I don't understand why she isn't dressed normally for the 18th century. The pixie cut looks ridiculous on her in this setting. And the gown is more like 1860 than 1780. She must have gotten a cut rate fairy godmother who wasn't up with the times. And why is she so rude to the host and his son? Very unsatisfactory.

  • @OreadNYC

    @OreadNYC

    3 жыл бұрын

    In this version of the story, the fairy godmother is still a fairy but she doesn't tell Cinderella that she's a fairy and therefore doesn't use her powers very much. She pretends to be a crazy old woman who's living out in the woods all by herself. Cinderella befriends her because they're both outcasts. The fairy godmother pretends that she stole the dress and the shoes from Cousin Lulu, who according to one of the stepsisters did have a dress like that one. My guess is that they decided not to put Leslie Caron in a wig in this scene because they wanted to make certain she stood out more easily in the crowd shots...but in the story, her hair is short because she lost her temper and cut it off.
