Always loved this Bronislau Kaper song, so I replaced the mono DVD audio with stereo from the FSM CD. Gilbert Russell sings for Michael Wilding.

Michael Wilding wasn’t very appreciated by Hollywood in his day. He was stuck doing B movies, with only a few hits. He suffered from epilepsy throughout his life, and died from brain injuries suffered from falling down a flight of stairs when a seizure hit him. I always sympathized with him for that, because my dad had epilepsy as well, and I watched him go through two seizures as a teenager.

I have always loved this movie more than any other version, mostly because she has to go through a change in her mind and is shown the importance of it. It's unlike those "here's your shoes and a sparkly dress, now go grab that prince" versions.

I don't know why I didn't see this movie as a child, maybe it never aired on TV, or whatever. But I finally got to see this on TCM last year and it's really enjoyable, and I watched again a couple of nights ago on TCM. I appreciate what a trooper Wilding does in this. He tried so hard to get out of it, because he was not a dancer and not a singer, but he wasn't given a choice, thanks to the contract. I have to say when this is talked about on TCM the commentary is always how stiff he is, and they don't give any kudos to his performance, i.e. what a shame they couldn't get ... I could say that a degree there may be some stiffness, yes, but he managed it, and managed it well, and, frankly, I couldn't help but fall in love with him in this. How many versions of Cinderella are there now? Anyway, I saw "The Slipper and the Rose" at Radio City, and that's interesting -- good cast and, of course, several others. I love the class Rogers and Hammerstein one. "Ever After" is interesting, too. But I like this one. It's got some great dialogue, especially Estelle Winwood -- slippery fingers, magic and a book reader, which seems to have made her an outcast. And a wonderful original score -- an interesting hybrid -- because it's not a musical and it's not strictly a drama. On a second viewing last night I couldn't help but add about the wonderful narration by Walter Pidgeon. The narration and the screenplay is truly terrific. It's gets better every time you watch. You know, Leonard Maltin gave this 2 stars out of 5, a four line review, which started with the word "silly." Well, I think Maltin, like most critics, gets paid too well for what he does.

Thanks for the extended clip, leading up to the song, then away from it. Context. It's not a musical. But somehow, the song is essential to the story. Kaper's melody is lovely, but I especially appreciate Helen Deutch's thoughtful lyric. She also wrote the screenplay, so again, this a song made integral to the story.
