the only thing i would change at this video, is shaving someone as well, that would be SO great, the sharping sounds and after that the shaving sounds, perfect combination

very nice indeed, not just asmr for the sake of asmr but an excellent demonstration of how to refine steel blades on whetstones. this is a very high grit stone and thus the sounds are very silky and smooth - interestingly if you'd used a less refined blade on a coarser grit stone, it may have produced a slightly different asmr experience

What kind of stone is that Pedro? (Shobu, Oozuku, Nakayama, etc...) I know that generally speaking the mine where it came from doesn't matter but I am curious about the color of the stone

Pedro, could you tell me how do you kill the edges of JNATs? Do you you use a diamond plate? Do you recommend using it or are there other better methods of killing the edges of natural hones?

Hi Felix.. Yes, diamond plate is the best method. After lapping, just a few strokes around the edges should be fine. You just want to avoid sharp edges.. But you can also use sandpaper.. Same result.

Do you know what grit # stone you are using? I have some whetstones for sharpening knives and I want to know if I can use them with a straight razor.

For straight razors you want to set the bevel with a stone around 1000 grit.. Can use a lower grit stone but the lower you get the harder it will be to remove the large scratches.. Then you need a mid range stone to remove the 1000 grit scratches. I use a 5000 grit. Some people like to use a 2 or 3k in between , that's fine. I dont find it necessary. Then you start your finishing process.. That is done using a at least 8k stone.. In my case I use a natural stone. Natural stones do not have a grit rating, because they're made by mother nature. With Japanese stones you use slurry , so with slurry it's easy to take an edge at 5000grit to something comparable to 12k or more.. Because slurry particles break down, acting like a higher grit.. Then you can finish with water only, it will polish the edge even more, like a 15k or more synthetic would do. But with the advantage of keeping the edge feeling super smooth and comfortable.. After all that we strop the razor on leather to refine, smooth and aligne the apex.. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.. ;)

Dear Pedro, could you tell me please what nagura stones are you using in the video? I would really like to have them. I didn't imagine it was possible to do a complete honing just with a JNAT and some naguras. Incredible!

Hello Félix! This are Asano naguras, (botan, tenjyou and mejiro). With this you can mountain a razor for a long time, but you can also do that with Just Diamond slurry.. I don't recomend them. I have this set more as a collectable. I don't use it often. This are traditionally used on katanas. You can't set a bevel with this set. Well, you probably can but depending on the edge condition it could take weeks of work...😉

@@MrSilvestre587 Its definitely possible with lower grit natural stones, but a lot quicker and easier with modern high quality synthetic stones. Jnats are the best on final stages.

@@MrSilvestre587 Hi Félix, its definitely possible, to set a bevel with a belgian blue but it would take way to much time. Since bevel set is the most important step of razor honing, in my opinion you should use a good quality synthetic stone, like a shapton, naniwa 1k, king, suehiro, etc... And do it in minutes instead of hours or even days, because most likely you will spend hours trying, and then find out the edge sucks, and you will need to start all over again. On razors ,you set the bevel on a 1k, 1.5 or 2k synthetic stone. That's it. I don't like to do the mid range work with coticules, I only use coticules to finish. It's the exact same thing as I do with a Jnat on the final stage. I don't get very good results using slurry on coticules, but to be honest I never tried hard enough. I'm sure they can be very good mid range stones.. But I will stick to my trusted shapton 5k.

How is the geometry on the Revisers? As good a Ralf Aust?

Pedro enjoying your channel. Some incredible straight razor techniques I’m picking up. Could you tell me which magnification instrument you used…in particular the second device where you show us what you see through the scope. Would like to pick up that same unit. Great content all around!

I think you mean the small yellow stone ? That's a stone, softer than the base stone. To create slurry, those stones are named naguras.

Very, very hard, very fine grain. Some would say LV5++ It's the only jnat I kept. Plus the naguras ofcourse.

Stop flicking the nagura stone off the whetstone.
