    Wait, the scene with Deckard going to the snake salesman? That's fixed, in "The Final Cut". The cut where they used Harrison's son's jaw/mouth and it now matches and is fixed. Have you not seen "Blade Runner The Final Cut"? Yeah, and I'm gunna side with the writer and with the Director on Deckard being a replicant, but I did always had a the feeling he was a replicant. It doesn't matter what anyone feels about what Deckard is, the Director, Sir Ridley Scott, says he is a replicant. However, just because Sir Ridley Scott "loves the idea" Blade Runner can(is?) in the same universe as the Alien/Prometheus/Total Recall 2077 TV and movies....well.....that's better than Soldier being a part of the shared universe. Today i found out: The original movie has 4 novel tie-ins? Not written by Dick. There's 3 video games, I thought there was only 1. The latest one is a VR game, it came out in 2018.

    Adam, dude, the best evidence that deckard is a replicant is the inclusion of the unicorn scene as part of his memories before he finds the origami unicorn. This is a change made in the final cut! Throughout the film The other officer can't talk to him so he taunts him with origami. The message of the unicorn isn't that he found Rachel it's that he knows about deckard's unicorn memory. Deckard has a false memory he is a replicant! The only question is does he know before that moment? He always talks about quitting throughout the movie but he never can. They simply won't let him and they're rude to him and he just falls along with it. Like he knows the deal. The unicorn origami. This is the moment he realizes he has to run to quit.

    Nah, deckard dealing with his hand injury at the same time as roy, to me, highlights that replicants and humans are basically the same, making you feel even worse everytime deckard kills them on repeat watches. Plus, deckard was a long retired blade runner, working before the nexus 7 models were created, so he would have been way too advanced, plus why would bryant hire a replicant since hes clearly dispises them. To me the unicorn symbolises rachel, being that unicorns are 1 of a kind, just like rachel. Deckard also dreams about the unicorn, which could be interpreted as dreaming of rachel, which is why he looks at rachels pictures after the dream sequence. Then finally the unicorn origami symbolises gaff knows shes special, when gaff said 'its a shame she wont live...' i take it to mean hes telling deckard he knows of rachels, existance, then the origami is saying he knows that shes special. Imo deckard is human, otherwise i feel the story loses the emotional weight of humans killing things they deem lesser than themselves, even tho they are identical (insert possible racial subtext here).

    As far as Bryant hiring Deckard, he's a police captain and has nothing to do with hiring officers (although he can get them a long way to being fired or promoted). He's also a blithering idiot who would never recognize a Replicant. Deckard appears to have come to the conclusion that Replicants are fully human (which is why he quit being a bladerunner), but he also recognizes that this group is murdering anyone who gets in their way and so needs to be stopped. The indications from the film are that if Deckard is a Replicant, he's NOT more advanced than the Nexus 7 series. He gets the crap beaten out of him by Nexus 7's no less than three times, including by a 'basic pleasure model,' and is clearly LESS physically capable than any of the three he fights. He only kills the two women because he's got a gun and neither of them do, and Batty just doesn't bother making sure he's dead. Roy is in the middle of his body shutting down and he's still faster, stronger, and far tougher than Deckard. At the end of their fight, Deckard is trying to run away (likely fully aware that Roy is in the process of dying and all he needs to do is keep away from him for a few minutes and he'll finish it and Deckard will survive), and Roy makes a leap that Deckard didn't and EASILY lifts Deckard with one hand, literally seconds away from his own death. If Deckard has any unusual abilities, it's probably that he can differentiate between normal human and Replicant emotional reactions much more easily than regular humans, and Rachel demonstrates that a more realistic background memory set will seriously blunt even his ability to detect them. (Why does this kind of testing detect Replicants? Because Replicants are, normally, emotionally stunted by not having memories of growing up and learning how to deal with things, so they don't know how. A Replicant has the emotional reactions of a small child, which makes the fact Priss was built to be a sex slave particularly unsettling.)

    @@evensgrey i might be wrong, but i seem to remember the voight kampf test being brought in because of the nexus 6 (roys lot) because they became too hard to detect, which would mean the previous replicants would be much easier to find out, i believe in the book (i know its not canon to the film) it says that replicants have the emotional capacity to am autistic child, i think that earlier models would have this trait. Also if you compare the emotions of deckard and roys lot, (especially leon) it seems that deckard is much more emtionally mature (like an adult human). So really its less about the strength and abilities, and more about the emotional differences. (Theres also the 'red eye' detail that all other replicants show other than deckard) The best thing about blade runner is being able to theorise, personally i prefer him being human, but its great to have the discussion 40 years after the films release

    I saw the film then later read most of all PKDs output. And a lot of PKD is "what makes one human?" In 'Do Androids..' you have a very human replicant and a quite inhuman Bladerunner (who is human but is part of a fake Blade runner unit run by replicants). So the contrast in film should be that you have treatment of replicants as subhuman slaves and a human who isn't sure if he's human or not. At one level making Deckard a replicant takes away the crossover because Deckard is doubting his humanity for good reason not because it's a philosophical question.

    @@angelocanale8102 I think that Ridley probably knew that a lot of people wouldn't come to the film via the book, so he could have that ambiguity play. I don't mind the change, because Deckard's status doesn't really matter if you ask the question, what does it mean to be human? The same effect could be achieved if they were explicit in the film about Deckard believing he was a replicant and someone trying to convince him that he's not. But that would have been a much larger sub-plot. Where as this is more economical in the story telling. Its meta, I'll grant that, but what else do you get from a movie which is mutable?

    Philip K Dick has said in an interview that maybe _everyone_ in the story is a replicant, and that all real humans would have gone off-world. His purpose was to make us think about it and to think about _what_ _makes_ _us_ _human_ . The screenwriter Hampton Francher had chosen to leave the question open for the viewer to ponder. Ridley Scott wanted differently but in the theatrical cut(s) the question still remains unanswered. Commendations to Denis Villeneuve for keeping it open in BR2049, so as to appeal to fans of all versions of the movie.

    While I completely agree with Adam's conclusion about Deckard's nature, I think the fight scenes aren't a good place to hang your hat on. Unless it's done for specific character purpose or for comedic effect, you generally don't see people reacting to fights on film. There's also the whole thing that a fight sequence you see in a movie would likely end with people needing to go to an ER with all kinds of injuries, as opposed to just needing a "raw steak on the eye" kind of solutions. Movie fights can't really be used as a measure of the pain the character is - or should be - feeling.

    There may be clues that suggest Deckard is a replicant. It may well have even been Ridley Scott's intention that Deckard is a replicant (though I think this has been retconned). What I will forever maintain, however, is if Deckard is a replicant, the entire message and point of the movie is lost. The whole theme is that Deckard is a man, a human man, who - through his gruesome and merciless work - has lost his humanity and his respect for life. He has become no better than a killing machine. He gains his redemption and his humanity back through falling in love with Rachel, a replicant, and through watching another replicant, Roy Batty, show compassion, mercy, and a love and respect for life. If Deckard is a replicant, then it's just a pointless circle jerk.

Scott irked Fancher by insisting on more & more changes, and by the time they’d got into literally dozens of re-writes, Fancher threatened to walk if they (Scott and Deeley) forced any more upon him. They did, pushing him out and replacing him with David Peoples. But Peoples was a fan of Fancher’s final version and so adjusted and rewrote it as little as poss. Peoples and Fancher actually became very good friends, through the process and each man wrote Deckard as a human. It was a misunderstanding, with Scott, that made each think the other had intended Deckard to be a replicant, though, and neither ever raised it with the other until after filming, and Scott had had his way (as he was wont to do, and to hell with everyone else’s feelings - see his clashes with the American crew, who loathed him, for the most part, during the painful and endlessly reshot period of filming).

To me it fits with the hard boiled film noir genre where voice overs were common, like Fred McMurray in Double Indemnity and Humphrey Bogart in movies that I forget at the moment. And Gaff knowing that Decker dreams of unicorns is pretty good evidence. As a commentary on the self, I always go back to the character of Leon or a reference to the concept of solipsism (that only one's mind is sure to exist) in a world where the contents of one's mind may have been implanted.

    You’re not the only one! I don’t like the cuts without the narration. Being inside Deckard’s head is part of the exploration of being human, as well as being important for it to feel like a future noir detective film. The unicorn thing though isn’t convincing to me at all. They worked together, they are both Blade Runners, for all we know Deckard told Gaff about his dreams. I can’t buy that Deckard is a replicant because why do the replicants kick his ass the whole movie if he is one? And why would you create a replicant that sucks to hunt down other replicants? Wouldn’t that just make it likely your guy fails and the replicants get away?

  • @tiacho2893

    @tiacho2893

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@TheRealWalkingDude So I am not the only one. Just the only one I know. On the unicorn (just one example that's familiar to everyone), I'm going by the primary source (the movie itself). Even if Deckard told Gaff about his dreams in the past, it is not in the movie. Scott's and Ford's vision of Deckard's backstory is never explicit. I'm coming from a lit. crit view. Inferences of what may or not be true should not be included in of an interpretation and especially not by itself (it's like primarily using a writer's bio to support your interpretation of their poem/story). And remember that Bryant mentioned the almost impossible "skin jobs" Deckard has hunted down. So either an exceptional human or mediocre "replicant" for general application. Deckard taking down Leon (optimised for hard manual labour) and Batty (a specifically engineered combat model) is a tough lift if he was "only human". And Pris and Zhora were active parts of the escape group. They would not be pushovers either. Also, remember that Leon failed the Voight Kampff but was able to kill Holden, even though he was probably not the most dangerous. That kinda sums up what I see as evidence. And Deckard being a replicant kinda reinforces the theme of the movie. I mentioned this concept in another comment. But I think solipsism and almost indistinguishable artificiality are major themes. But I might be very very wrong. Sorry about the length and language. I sometimes get into essay mode when talking about film. Old habit.

  • @TheRealWalkingDude

    @TheRealWalkingDude

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@tiacho2893 yes, but Gaff also doesn’t say onscreen how he knows to make the unicorn. Your interpretation also involves something not seen on screen, Gaff being told or learning at some point in the past that Deckard is a replicant. This is the thorny thing in the lit crit method of interpretation, because there’s a lot of begging the question involved. If we can’t infer any scenes happened that we don’t see in the movie, like Deckard telling Gaff about his dreams, we also can’t infer a scene where Gaff learns Deckard isn’t human.

    7:17 We are also faced with the fact that just as Deckard was told about Rachael's implanted dreams and memories, at some point Gaff must have been told by Tyrell about Deckard's implanted unicorn dream. How this came about is left for us to guess, but it leaves some very interesting questions.

    The image of the cityscape that Ridley Scott envisaged is that of where he was born, Southbank in Middleborough. It's a grim post industrial area which used to be the most deprived part of the UK by some margin. Southbank is sandwiched between old docks and coke works for the steel works and overlooks the ICI chemical plant. The Bladerunner city vision is remarkably close to what you see at night.

    I came across this neat alternative scene from an earlier script of Blade Runner on the Blade Runner Wikia that might have inspired the depiction of the aforementioned Mr House: "It was originally intended that the Tyrell Batty crushed would be revealed to be a replicant, and as a result, Batty would head up to the next floor, where he would discover the real Tyrell in cryogenic suspension. Sebastian would then explain that an incurable disease struck Tyrell, who had himself frozen until a cure is found.

    I hate the idea of Deckard being a replicant. It ruins the theme of him coming out of his jaded shell and regaining his humanity. That he is the hunter who turns into the hunted, who has to be the one to fear for his life for once. And wasn't everyone involved against the idea except for Ridley Scott? Also if Tyrell wanted to deal with replicants in-house why even bother with the LAPD charade at all?

  • @punk4278

    @punk4278

    3 жыл бұрын

    The "charade" is exactly what Scott wants. It's to show the viewer something more grounded that we can relate to better. The twist (if there is one) would be even sweeter due to this. Is he a replicant? Who knows. That's the beauty, we come to that answer for ourselves. Do we find humanity in ourselves or within the humanlike replicants, these are the questions I assume Scott wants us to ask ourselves.

    @@MonkeyspankO It bombed in theatres. I saw discounted in a second run theatre (kinda had the place that VOD has now). But I think a lot of Scott's movies get more popular in retrospect. The aesthetic is a weird mix of vintage (Deckard's walls are patterned after the Ennis House by FLW, 1920s I think) and 1940's (Rachel's hair/costume), and the future (Batty's very techie looking trench coat and Gaff's police car). Even if you thought the acting was stiff, Blade Runner is a masterclass in costume, props, set design, and cinematography.

    I love the narration watching it without was really weird. During the original filming Harrison Ford asked if Deckard was a replicant and Scott said no. It's only much later that Scott changed his mind. Deckard isn't as strong or as fast as the 'other' replicants and you don't see anyone in any movie show lots of pain during fight sequences I'm gonna disagree with your logic. Gaff's little origami at the end is Gaff for me is him just letting Deckard know he's letting him go, he's giving Deckard his blessing to run because Gaff wants to be the best and he can't be whilst Deckard is there and he can't kill him because he's not a replicant. 2049 was sooooo slow I fell asleep it felt like someone was trying to make movie look like bladerunner but doesn't quite pull it off it's all in the pacing.

    The idea of Gaff's origami was conceived during filming. Edward James Olmos made an origami chicken during the scene in Bryant's office because he hadn't been given anything to do. Scott noticed it and decided to put it in the movie. First after that came the matchstick and the origami unicorn.

  • @Elitistb616

    @Elitistb616

    @@FindecanorNotGmail I think we might be discussing slightly different things. "The unicorn scene" would be the unicorn in the dream. Scott inserted this in later cuts (I think it was footage filmed during Legend, actually) to try to give the origami unicorn some additional meaning it didn't originally have, as if Gaff knew about the dreams. There was no such connection originally, because there was no dream originally. It was just something Olmos did to add to Gaff's character (like his speech and language patterns). Gaff also, like you said, made a chicken. This has no huge revelatory import, nor does the match, and likely neither did the unicorn originally.
