Adam Savage Goes Hands-On with Pip-Boy Prop from Fallout TV Show!

Ғылым және технология

We love the new Fallout TV series, and are thrilled to go hands-on with the actual hero Pip-Boy prop that Lucy wears in the show! Chris Barnardo of The Wand Company brings this prop along with prototypes of the official 1:1 die-cast replica that he and his team have been developing, as Adam goes in-depth with the features, functionality, and finish of this wearable collectible--the newly minted Pip-Boy 3000 Mk V!

Sort of Off-Topic: I remember the advertisements in PC-GAMER for Creative's SoundBlaster AWE64 sound cards, which the ads featured a game and then had a list of 64 sounds from it. _(the card being able to play 64 simultaneously was important back then)_ I remember that I had cut out the one for _Fallout_ and pinned it on my wall. ~13y/o me thought it looked cool, as it was the T-51 helmet from the box art. 😊

@@theAlchemyst11 I was the new guy (about 1.5 years before release) so I got tasks with the UI's a lot. Was usually mostly tying in the graphics from the artists with bits of code. I recall one thing in particular (was a long time ago) for the pip boy was a one bit mask that was used to display area maps. And I got behind working on it. Speaking of being behind schedule, for a while we had this insane enforced daily plan. And I haven't seen anything like it since at any company. Fred the producer guy, would give us a daily task list. And it had ridiculous time slots. Like "30 minutes to add this graphic", "two hours to do this", "four hours for that" and so on. You've heard of "Micromanagement"? Well this was "Picomanagement"! And Fred was not even a programmer so I don't know where he pulled these times out of. Although he worked closely with producer Tim who was actually a programmer. So maybe he supplied the the time frames. AFAIK programming has never worked like that. How do you really know something is going to take an hour let alone 15 minutes? Maybe they they thought was being generous with plenty of time. Anyhow despite this, and other pitfalls, it's at least one game out of a dozen I worked on that was actually a hit. And it's great to see it, and the other games since Bethesda bought the rights here some 27-8 years later!

I've said it before, but Adam being so emotive over the topics/objects/etc is also what makes his content amazing. Saved me from looking up the price. Was thinking it's nice, but it doesn't do much. I want a real GPS map converted into green screen. But that would take software development, licensing and even adding something simple like a heart rate monitor would add cost and slow production. Plus no doubt the maker and modder community will get on to that. I think it's also funny that Adam's already wearing a far more sophisticated 'PIP Boy' on his wrist. Part of the think I loved about Fallout is that whole retro-future '50s and '60s SF aesthetic though.

Before the show was announced, I had wanted to suggest Adam build a suit of Power Armor, like his Iron Man Mk.1... but didn't think Adam would have enough interest in a game to do it. *_However,_* now that it's a show that Adam can more easily get into it... I *really **_really_* hope Adam will make one now!! 🤞😌🤞 Would make me SUCH a happy guy! 😊 *_EDIT:_*_ Also, I think it deserves mentioning, that there are MULTIPLE different models of Power Armor that Adam could pick from. He would just need to look at the Fallout Fandom-Wiki to see all the variants, across all the games. There's even various paint schemes for them, thanks to Fallout 76 (my fav is the "Blackbird" scheme, which is SR-71 inspired and is matte black with red accents). WHAT'S MORE... There's also the "Raider" variants, which are 'Mad Max' modified._ _AND, in terms of the games, you had 2 arms, 2 legs, the helmet, and the torso... So what I did for my FO76 character's armor was mix and matched from the different models, to create an _*_even more_*_ unique look. (they were all affixed to a power armor "exoskeleton" chassis)_ 😊 _So it's definitely a "kid in a candy store" scenario, with a lot of choices and freedom. (as cool as the Raider armors look, I hope Adam would go for one of the "pre-war" models heh)_

the tube size is proportional to the sensitivity. The tubes are very expensive (relatively) and generally, for a small tube that would fit in a Pip-Boy unless you were outside Chernobyl's front door you wouldn't hear many clicks... so one click every day or so would not be much fun... on the other hand, it would mean that you were safe... You don't really want to hear those clicks, especially since RadAway hasn't been invented yet.

I think you can buy the capacitive touch film and lay it overtop of the plastic concave making the look and functionality. I'd use the geiger counter not for accurate purposes but to be very rudimentary. That is still interesting to me.

The product they ship to customers tends to be of poorer quality. This is a pattern for Bethesda and the companies they contract out to make these things.
