    The plausible/confirmed thing always made sense to me, within the context of the show. "Confirmed" meant that they were confirming that the thing in question actually happened, not just that it was physically or biologically possible. The eye patch is a perfect example, because they demonstrated the technique worked, but they didn't have a firsthand account of a pirate or other naval personnel stating that they wore an eyepatch for better night vision. In an earlier myth, the opposite thing happened, with an exploding jawbreaker. They weren't able to replicate the results under lab conditions, but still ended up confirming the myth because there was an actual account of a little girl who had a jawbreaker explode in her mouth.

I used to work at a giant scale RC hobby store and every few months Grant would have the production team call us and order some of these massive "seiko" servos we used to sell. Carbonation is extra CO2 in a liquid, whether beer or soda or whatever. Having been binging the episodes recently, I can say that in the four or five cases so far where they said one thing in the field but then used a different plate than what they said, most are like what he described here: it had to do with a historical claim where they confirm that is what could have happened, but the research team likely couldn't confirm that was definitely what actually happened, so it went from confirmed to plausible. Though the pirate episode wasn't really a case of this; they said it was plausible in the ending blueprint room scene and showed the plausible plate. I think in the cases where it has happened, they shoot the scene where they say it was plausible or confirmed in the field after doing a final big test, then changed their minds later and didn't want or weren't able to reshoot the ending discussion scene.

    yeah I always figured that was the logic behind those kinds of Plausible classifications. Whenever it was about something specifically historical, unless actual evidence was found that it was done in real life, the best rating it could get was Plausible since no matter what it doesn't prove whether or not those historical peoples actually used the tested technique or whatever.

  • @Mick_92

    This is pretty much how I would think of it too. "Confirmed" could only apply to myths of the form "If you perform action/procedure A, you get result B", where experimentally obtaining that same result would indeed confirm the myth. For myths of the form "This once happened to someone", or "someone/people used to do this to obtain this result" they could verify that it was indeed physically possible (so it's occurrence was plaussible), but not that it actually happened. Not without some background/historical research that was kind of out of their field.

    Here in New York City, we recently had our primaries and I worked at one of the poll sites. It was a college theater and was painted all black with white stripes and not much in the way of overhead lights. So it was quite dark inside. When you came in from outside, and with the bright sun that was beating down, I flashed back to the eye patch episode. Cause not only going in caused some disruption but so did going back outside. Just as if Blackbeard was going from below deck to the top deck and vice versa. I did tell a couple of my poll worker colleagues about the episode. You know, this reminded me to think about one of the “myths” they were testing and said was busted, but had basically happened to me. So, to be fair, part of the myth was about lethality of the myth, and that was never true; however, I had the underlying premise of the myth happen to me years before I saw the episode. The myth was that the old 56x cd drives were spinning so fast that the discs would explode and shards were injuring or even killing people. The second part was 100% not true and really not even possible because the 56x drives were encased in a steel or aluminum shell for the actual drive itself and then cases back then were steel or aluminum shells. The plastic of a CD just doesn’t have the power to penetrate those. So, as a whole, the myth was Busted, but I remember Jamie, I think, saying something along the lines of the drive not spinning fast enough to cause the discs to explode and that alone was enough to bust the myth. I can personally attest that I had my 56x drive explode my Diablo CD while I was trying to TP from Tristram back into the dungeon. I remember hearing the sound, the drive stop spinning, and when I tried to open the try, it would not open more than a few millimeters. I saw shards of my Diablo disc with a couple falling out of the drive. So, I know that those drives were able to spin fast enough to destroy CDs. Nothing else in the computer was damaged because the pieces did not have enough energy to break out of the drive itself.

    In case people don't know, production of a show generally is split into 3 stages. Pre-production, production and post-production. Pre-production is all the stuff needed to prepare to do the production. Ideas, planning, scripts, storyboards, rough/prelim voice acting, etc. In a reality-type show like mythbusters (I've only been a part of animations, not live action), I imagine any prep like location reservations, scheduling, etc. Production is the actual shooting of the show, narration, etc. The raw thing being seen and/or heard. Post-production is where editing, reshoots, CG, compositing, etc.happens. It's not uncommon for pre and/or post teams to have never seen where the production happens or the people that actually do the production. (actors, animators, etc. I've never seen the animation studio that we did the CG/post effects for.) Also, these aren't hard and fast rules. Different shows can mix it around. So when Adam says, "the post team did the animation", that's what he's talking about. Any reshoots, special effects (like when they have a shot where there's a time lapse in the background while someone in the foreground talks), or anytime there's a graphic or a chart onscreen, that's done in post. That's also where the line "We'll fix it in post." came from. The joke being, a lot of the times, it's not.

    That was an excellent question on busted, confirmed, plausible. I hadn't thought of it before myself, just accepted. Adam gave an excellent explanation as to why myths were plausible opposed to confirmed. I also like how Jamie and Adam discussed the results and came to a consensus even when they initially didn't agree. They had such a great working relationship and were so professional, it's hard to believe they didn't 'click' personality wise as it were.

    I've seen a file for 3d printing that is the Mythbusters plate (it's creator had you autograph it), but I've not seen the other plates as files I could print. I have been thinking of what I could to to dip into creating my own 3d files and I think I want to try the plates

    for the pirates eyepatch, I've heard somewhere that it was so they could see when going below deck immediately, rather than needing to wait for their eyes to adjust. as pirate ships wouldn't have cannons on the top deck. due to hiding them on approach to surprise merchant ships.

  • @1pcfred

    @1pcfred

    Main gun decks were always below deck on all sailing ships. That's just how they were made. The top deck was the sailing deck. You needed the whole deck for managing the sails of the ship. A ship being armed was no surprise to anyone either. All ships were armed. If you were out on the high seas then you were armed. Because most ships out there would take you if they could. You could only hope for quarter from your own fellow countrymen. Everyone else was your enemy.

    I have a serious question about coffee! Some sources say that the bitterness in coffee comes from over-extracting the flavors from it with brewing water that's too hot or that the coffee is continued to be "cooked" by the keep warm plate. Others say that coffee undergoes changes as it cools and releases bitter compounds during the chemical breakdown of components as it cools and can never regain the former flavor if it is reheated and therefore should never be allowed to cool. WHAT GIVES? How do I keep my coffee tasting its best for the longest possible time after brewing it?

    I always loved that you clearly distinguished between "plausible" and "confirmed". Especially with historical events or urban myths it's hard to actually confirm anything happened. This clear delineation gave you the extra bit of scientific credibility. - Even if your methodology was sometimes a bit of a whack job... (Magic Pyramid anyone?)

    It amuses me that Mythbusters was produced in Artarmon NSW, a pleasant suburb of Sydney that I lived in very briefly as a child. Mythbusters is easily the most exciting thing to happen in the history of Artarmon, even including its connection to the Rum Rebellion of 1808.

    It is plausible in the early days of seafaring on a ship that had lower decks that mariners would wear an eyepatch for day to day life on board a ship. Pirates didn't need to do this just to attack opposing vessels. It would be ideal at a time when light options were limited to daylight and fire torches. Say you were outside on a sunny day and the captain wanted you to go down into the storage area and bring back some specific box real quick. You'd need to be able to see down there to find the box and bring it back up. A fire torch would be too dangerous to use and would mean one less free arm to do manual labor. Keeping one eye in the dark at all times would make navigating the ship's interior easier.

  • @jesarablack1661

    This discussion on the what determined which tier of plausible/confirmed/busted reminds me of my most common annoyance with busting "someone died from this" stories. I'll use one I recall specifically as an example, a blank and cigarettes, or a shotgun shell loaded with cigarettes, something like that... it resulted in 'busted' because try as they might, they couldn't get the cigarettes to penetrate the ballistic gel dummy more than about a quarter to a half of an inch. But they specifically penetrated the throat, more than once. And while I'm not saying they would rip through the windpipe, I will point out you have Multiple arteries that are shallower than that, in that location, and a single nick to One of them, in a rural setting is "They bled out". Totally not enough to Confirm the case (like he said, they would have needed something like a newspaper or coroner report of the actual case, etc), but it does make it Plausible that an unfortunate person in that circumstance could die from it. Not Likely, but plausible. There were a lot of cases like that where the results were effectively "This specific form of death isn't indicated, guess it can't kill you" while overlooking a related form of death the results were proving (perhaps unlikely, but) possible.

    I'm in agreement with the Plausible verdict on the eyepatch one. If you had a historian with a document, like a ship's log from a pirate captain who mentions using eyepatches for roles that need night and day vision, that would confirm that myth as stated. The "plausible" verdict says "yeah this does work, the science is sound, even if we don't have the archaeology."

  • @kirotheavenger60

    @kirotheavenger60

    Ай бұрын

    The archeology in fact very much substantiates that it's a myth. We have quite extensive historical recordings of sailors and pirates (who were just sailors outside the law), and none of them mention eyepatches at all. Until Treasure Island. Which depicted a broken and ragtag group of pirates with all sorts of bits missing. But this massively popularised the genre what we think of as modern pirates are very specifically treasure island pirates. Also, historically there would be very little need for this at all. It's easy to forget, but the sort of high contrast lighting situations we have now is very much modern electric lighting. On a ship in the age of sail there wouldn't be harsh lighting differences and your eyes would naturally adjust to darkness as the sun falls. Even if they had artificial lights - they would be dim yellow oil lamps or candles, much less 'harmful' to your dark vision. So there would be no need to protect your night vision as is postulated. Furthermore, depth perception is really, really, important for a sailor. When you're climbing ropes hundreds of feet in the air you need to be sure of where everything is. Losing all depth perception would cause a huge huge problem for yourself. So, to historically speaking, this myth is very much 'busted'. In fact, just in general people put way too much empthasis on the relevance of war and violence in historical people's lives. Even an outlaw raider like a pirate would spend 99% of their lives not fighting, and given the speed of ships would have several hours or even days warning of an incoming ship. They would not style their entire life over a very niche circumstance like an opposed boarding action at night.
