Asiatic Archery - Three Releases

Ever wanted to try Asiatic Archery, where you shoot a traditional recurve type bow using a thumb draw and release?
This video is concerned with three Asiatic Bow release techniques from the ancient Arabic manuscript (circa. 1500CCE ) called Book on the Excellence of the Bow and Arrow, which was translated, into English, in 1945, as Arab Archery.
I'll help you navigate through the mass of information concerning Asiatic Archery in a friendly and cordial manner, throwing in a bit of historical perspective along the way.

Mukhtalas release was meant for adding speed to the arrow. It's also called a snap release. The immediate backwards forwards momentum gives the arrow more speed and farther cast of the arrow. I like Armins example of getting a car unstuck you dont just push it forwards but backwards then forwards giving extra momentum. Good video man

Jeff, that was very clear information. Exactly what I struggle with. I have torn rotator cuff, but archery has helped me to avoid surgery. I have several fiberglass and several laminated bows from Alibow. I bought from him regularly until Covid. The Segye would have bern my next purchase. I envy your scenery. All I have is sand and flat land here in West Texas.🤠

For me, the Korean release works best. Pull the Tigars tail and pushing the Mountain. I my be wrong, but the Form you showed before, looks like you create the Khatra. But the Khatra must be the result of grasping, pushing the Bow. Hart to explain. Did you know what I mean?

I know exactly what you mean and you are absolutely correct..each type of khatra has a specific grip on the bow and a specific execution of draw and release resulting in a different movement of the bow upon release . For the most part is the same reason and result ....so the arrow clears the arrow pass and flies true right from the beginning..less friction and therefore more speed and greater penetration from a perfectly straight arrow. Some do not agree though it is proven time and again that more energy and force can be added by the archer during khatra

No brother it's called the snatched release otherwise known as the military technique. It's effect is to control the initial oscillation of the arrow and impart greater penetration and power into the arrow...done correctly a gain of 27% penetration is achieved. Now for what you are doing wrong...everything pretty much. You are supposed to draw leaving about an inch and a half yet to be drawn...the last inch and a half is then "snatched " back so fast that the eye can not see it and with a powerful jerk on the string the release and Khatra the string put to the ground. To onlookers it would appear that you have released without having come to full ......full draw in this case means the point of the arrow disappears behind the bows arrow pass so that it only rests upon the thumb. To snatch the arrow involves hard pressing the bow forward and rapid contraction of the muscles between the scapula. The Master of this technique is non other than Mihai Cozmei top rated and ranked horse archer in the world, you literally hear the power of his shots . It took me 3 years to learn the proper execution of this technique and yet still have not Master it by any means. You brother..have a long ways to go But keep up the practice you'll get it .

Mihai actually doesn't use thumb draw. He uses 'slavic draw', which holds the arrow with 3 fingers (pinkie to middle finger) and arrow is placed like in thumb draw (right side of bow for right handed archer). Also, his draw is quite short, stops pretty much in the same place as in modern archery. I attended his class last winter and tried it myself. It felt very fast and accurate way to shoot, but it just didn't feel right for me. I prefer thumb draw especially with Manchu ring.
