Pretty good attempt on achieving yugaeri on a Manchu bow! I tried the yarha sometime back and it does feel somewhat similar to a Yumi in a smaller package and shorter draw length. And since I do practice Kyudo, I often accidentally incorporate the proper grip and cause a slight rotation to happen. It's a bit challenging to do a full spin properly since it can't be forced and your grip should not be loosened for the bow to spin freely as that affects the arrow's trajectory and shooting consistency. I've kind of found that Asiatic archery does have influences here and about, and that's what drew me to learn more about it and various other forms of follow-through or khatra. Almost every form I've known seems to have some form of it, even in modern Olympic target shooting, so it's pretty fascinating!

You can do side khatra without having the bow go all the way around. Just torque slightly. Fancy khatra I hate as you have to reset your hand after. You can see leaders etc doing it in in paintings but in their free time sitting down

Nice presentation sir. In Japanese Kyudo, i believe i called Yugaeri (sorry if im wrong). For me, its more as follow through rather then khatra. The spinning thing is result from correct gripping of bow (tenouchi). Pressure on gripping or hand flip to make it spin would consider incorrect, its should spin naturally. As i quote from anime 'bow turning is a result, not a goal'- Tsurune.

Interesting! Could you explain more specific how to execute it in detail? Where do get that nice hand protector?

You prepare by adding some pressure to the bow hand in the direction of the khatra. On release, the bow hand will then be released and follow through on that initial slight pressure... There are tutorial videos out there for different khatras... The one I learned was super easy to execute for a novice like me and the arrows fly straight instead of reacting to contact with the arrowpass. EDIT: I learn from Armin Hirmer's videos BTW...

Nice video, Jeff, but didn't Gao Ying advocate against the use of khatra? I also believe that you shouldn't do that with a Manchu bow as its forward pointing and long ears are prone to lateral twist. Cheers, from Indonesia.

Hi Yusuf. Thanks. I found quite a lot of vitriolic dogma associated with Gao Ying and his opinions. So I tend to ignore him. However I am merely suggesting that Chinese and Japanese Khatra are related, which I think is quite possible given the cultural interchange on just about every level possible. Secondly I have no issues with any lateral twisting on my Manchu bow, as you can see in the video it works just great. My philosophy is this anyway: I'm an experimental archaeologist - which means I have to try things out, either to prove them or to disprove them. Thanks for the input though, it is always good to get feedback.

Are you shooting without a thumb ring or thumb protection? I've tried to look up guides on how to shoot thumb draw without a ring (for lower draw weights) but have been unsuccessful. Do you have any recommendations?

So if khatra stops arrow hitting bow and hand why are you wearing a glove ? And please do it in slow mo as looks like arrow has gone before bow spins in hand and do arrow speed test

Hi Neil. Thanks for the questions. I wear a hand protector because I shoot about 50-100 arrows in a session, in both eastern and western style. The hand protector prevents the inevitable fletch burn, that would occur otherwise, from shooting that many arrows. I am quite addicted to shooting and Khatra doesn't remove all of the impact of the fletching on the back of your hand, it rather makes a large reduction in the impact, but doesn't remove it completely in my experience. Exactly, the arrow has long gone by the time the bow fully rotates. The bow rotation is the after effect of Khatra not the actual release moment using Khatra. Khatra works at the moment of release, rotating the bow slightly through the pre-tension in the wrist, which the archer has already applied before releasing the arrow, it is a very small subtle movement. The bow rotating away is the follow through of Khatra and has become highly stylised by different bow using cultures. I may do arrow speed tests in future, if I can afford to purchase a chronometer. Cheers Jeff

Hold the bow so that you can point at the target (helps to grok the proper grip) Make sure the bow is leaning a bit to the side that the arrow is on and apply a little pressure with the bottom fingers that are holding the bow with. When you release, the bow hand will tilt to the side and forward a bit due to the little bit of barely tension you added. Worked right from the start for a beginner like me. Arrows fly straight instead of reacting to the bow's arrow pass...
