Asian Carp - Catch and Cook - BETTER than Catfish!

Try your own asian carp (Silver carp) catch and cook and let me know how it goes! While asian carp (silver or bighead carp) are definitely very bony (almost impossible to get boneless fillets), the meat is very tender without any noticeable fishy taste. In a Missouri conversation study, when 300 people were blinded, most preferred cooked asian carp to tilapia and catfish!
I hope you enjoyed this video! Best of luck fishing!!!!

Deep fry when you eat carp and get it crispy that way when you bite a piece that has bone, the bone just falls apart

Do people grind them and then consume the bones that way ? Maybe as patties or hush puppies.

Myself I feel all the carp taste similar to tilapia. The bones are no real trouble at all if you filet them right, it's easy with a little practice. No more trouble than pike or pickerel. Try poor mans lobster, you will love it. Scale or dont scale, skin or dont skin the filets accordingly. Chunk filets about 1" square. Drop in boiling water with real lemon boiling in there. As soon as they float remove with strainer spoon & place them on a plate. Watch pot size & foaming over. Now fork & dunk in melted butter & lemon juice & eat like lobster. Can even sprinkle with salt, black pepper & or lemon pepper. It's good. Baked skin side down or no skin, remove & sprinkle with paprika before &/or after baking or pan frying. Drizzle with lemon juice & butter, salt & pepper & chow. I also like to chunk & boil filets in water, galic, onion, carrots, celery, potatoes, rice, broccoli, sweet peppers & zucchini & stewed tomatoes. Plenty of hot peppers for hot fish gumbo veggie soup. Had v8 juice for a more Manhattan type style. Good with garlic toast french bread for dunking.

I'm 57 & am a very experience stream & river fisher. All carp are tricky, gentle biters & touchy about what baits work & only a few lures worked properly work readily. So I'll share some real tips with you & all other readers. Carp baits that should work on any carp include: worms, crayfish or just crayfish tails, leaches, corn, boilies & dough style baits & bread balls. I'm trying to help all of you, because all of these carp can be a big problem & destroy other fisheries & water bodies. I do mean destroy & ruin them too,in a big way by over & out populating other fish. Once they achieve this, the damage is long term & will continue indefinitely until they get their numbers knocked back & held there until other game fish can repopulate & control the carp numbers by feeding on the carp young hard enough. The trouble is the carp are one of the hardest fish to get to strike, know they are on line when they do & successfully land. They get so large they have no predators ,they dont fit in any other fishes mouth? The game fish young are out numbered & starved out by the carp young & can not repopulate until we knock those carp back. They bite so gentle & suck up baits & even a few lures just like a vacuum & gum the bait off that most will never know they were there & just think the bait fell off which sometimes does happen, but trust me,if the carp are there, they are stealing it. Bobbers are of very little help even scare the carp off, which are very cautious. If you use a bobber, which I dont recommend, because carp mostly feed from off the bottom & like deeper holes of any depth as long as they are available in that water way. Maybe just 2 feet deep, but if its deeper, that's where they are & like slower current too. Use a bobber that is natural if you want to use one,one that the carp are used to seeing & have no fear of. Make it from a piece of dry cotton wood branch or something. " yes!" They are that damn smart,i kid you not! Best way is tight line with your sinker on the bottom at the end of your line. Enough wieght to gently hold the line tight with out moving the sinker reguardless of current & wind forces on your fishing line. A snap swivel is good so you can change you sinker as conditions change. Now your hook wants to be about 18" further up the line on another snap swivel with a standard eagle claw or what ever 1/2" hook & heavy monofilament leader 8" to 12" long. Cast, let sink & gently crank reel until like is just about tight, then put 1 finger hooked in your line between your reel & first eyelet on your pole & pull just enough with that finger out to the side of your pole until you feel that sinked skid about an 1". Now stop & hold just tight to that sinker with that finger & stay that way paying very ,very close attention to your line visually as well as by feel through your finger. Have your drag pre set to slip,so as not to snap your line when you abruptly jerk & set that hook. That's how it has to be,abrupt, quick & the first instance you feel the slightest, almost non noticable tele tap in that tight line on your finger. I swear to you most times it feels like a 1" minnow bumped your line. Just jerk now damn it,that prick is there, gumming & sucking your bait off now that it vacuumed it in without you knowing. Trust me just jerk,& your first thought will be,damit, how did I get snagged up? Then its tail kicks & all hell breaks loose. Light line is best cause you can feel them better. Like max,12lb test! 10lb is better. 8lb I love. Learn to fish,it works wonders. Now for lures which is few. Again you work the bottom. Silver is what they like most. Very small spinners say mepps 1 or zero. Remove the treble & put on a #6 or 1/2" single hook. You can make a fly jig with a long #6 or 1/2" pinch on a lead free spit shot near the eye of the long hook, fashion a silver tinsel buck tail & tie, glue & clamp it to the hook with the steel split shot. Tiny silver daredevils work well too. Sand off all paint so it's all silver & put on a #6 single hook. If its stoney use snagless hooks instead. Cast, silt, mud bottom work best. Let it sink. Now jerk it & make it hop up off the bottom & toward you about 1foot. Wait & feel for a pick up or run or strike. Give it atleast 10 seconds & then with no warning or reason jerk again. Half the time it has vacuumed it up just like with bait & is just sitting there holding it inside its mouth. Just jig it in this way across the bottom 1 foot at a time so it makes a big quick silver flash & action every 10 to 20 seconds & if nothing,re cast & keep doing it. Beware. I have found this method to take massive adult carp unexpectedly dead hooked perfect in the mouth. Like 4 foot long was my last one on a silver mepps zero spinner. I've taken over 200lbs of carp in under 4 hrs from an infested ruined private bass pound of 13 acre using these methods while just bank fishing. I ate well & made trapping baits & the land owner loves me.

I just pulled a silver carp collar off the grill. Wrapped loosely in tin foil and slow cooked 2 hours over a silver maple fire. This is the third collar I've done this week. For about the last decade, silver carp has been my favorite fish to eat. I'm 57 and now give away pretty much all other fish I catch.

I'm heading to Illinois in about a month and want to fish for these. How do you best catch them? Is snagging the only real option (other than having them jump in your boat)?

  • @johnvanegmond1812

@@det1exec For me, snagging is the only way I catch them. Check the local regulations. I'm in Iowa. Some water prohibits all snagging. Where snagging is allowed, treble hook size is regulated and limited to one only one hook on your line. Gun regulations are insane in Illinois too, so if you plan on legally carrying, do your homework. That said, have a great time. You'll notice that when you handle the Silver or Bighead carp, your hands will smell more like minnows than common carp.
